The best part of this episode
On my complete honesty: A story based off a person’s dreams and their dream world sounds like an interesting idea. Reflecting how weird and surreal dreams are.
This movie could’ve done so much more if they used a higher budget, better CGI and a couple of rewrites. But the way it was left makes it feel less like a movie and more like an actual dream: Wild, messy and all over the place.
Well thats coz it was based on his kids dreams and stories. Which is why I always liked that it was like that. Its exactly like a dream
I kinda like the CGI because it reflects on a child imagination
I am an aspiring writer and artist and one of my main works in progress is based on a fever dream I had.
Like I had a dream about a complex isekai harem anime setup where the main character is a 40's detective summoned by complete accident by a novice wizard. This poor dude was the epicenter of a huge collection of fancy political ladies . . . But the twist was he's gay, and his closeted 40's brain is afraid to reveal it.
The world and story in general have completely evolved beyond that premise, but the Dick and the Wiz are still characters, even if they aren't the main focus anymore lol
So yeah, trippy fever dream shit is sometimes the most fun shit to work with.

There is already a movie with a similar premise and concept to this, but done better: Inception.

Linus is easily the best part of the movie. That kid is hamming it up to the absolute maximum and it is a JOY to watch.
You know Racer was so involved that he even attended the casting sessions, he literally picked out Sharkboy and Lavagirl

I may be reading too deep into this but I think Max created Sharkboy and Lavagirl to help deal with his troubled family situation and his parents fighting all the time. I think Sharkboy and Lavagirl are supposed to represent Max’s parents and how they work together even though they’re not compatible (water and fire)
A real weird story of mine: years ago i had a sleepover with some friends and we watched this movie, i will never forget what one of my friends said in that disturbing Lavagirl melting scene, he said quoting "Man, that is sexy", i want to make something clear in that age we were like 12-14 y.o (i was the oldest) and even with storming hormones that scene was weird but he took that weirdly far. End of that story of a friend that was very amused from a girl of lava melting.
What happened to him now? Is he okay? Did he do something?

kind of like reading old fanfictions you posted online when you were around 13-15(not my situation, just giving an example). You could delete them now, but they wouldn't be completely forgotten. Kind of makes me wonder how much did Rodriquez alter from his kid's original version. Surprisingly where I live it was aired on a dub version, so actually the voice actors were good and had better voice expression, so everyone sounded exited and interested. Watching in English now makes me feel bummed, the real actors do sound so bored.

I think Shark Boy would make an amazing comic series with his altered origin story being the first issue of the series. Plus his story ark could be about the journey of finding his father, whilst facing Villians, like a better Mr. Electric and making allies like his partner and potential love interest Lavagirl. These stories could take place in a place where Shark-Boy and his father used to live. This would be because that would be the most logical place to begin looking. Of course, there would be other visited places such as Lavagirl's Home and The Infamous Underwater Wreckage of Shark-Boy's home. Here Shark-Boy could discover why he got his powers and how the adoptive sharks were able to find him after the storm.
I would love to read that series.

I remembered enjoying this movie TOO much as a kid! I remember having my mom make me a Lavagirl costume for Halloween which I wore until it outgrew me, and I would go CRAZY acting along this movie and pretending I was Lavagirl! I would play the movie and jump on the couch, do gymnastics and go pretty much do a one woman re-enactment of all of Lavagirl’s moments as the movie went on! My mom even took video! Childhood memories

When you're in a dream, it seems to cut to different sequences and situations. You usually don't question what you're doing there and just go along with it. I feel like shark boy and lava girl actually portrayed dreams accurately. That's why no matter how weird and dumb people think this movie is, dreams are suppose to be weird and not make sense. The movie I think did best to show what dreams feel and look like in reality is Paprika.

Cynthia King You clearly haven't studied shark physiology. Certain shark species need to be constantly on the move, otherwise air will not go into their gills and they'll end up dying. It's one of the reasons why shark-finning is frowned upon.
William Raymond I would understand if they made that a point in the movie... but they don't. They never bring that up. Never. There are points in time where he's just sitting and he breaths just fine. Also- he's sinking-- So technically water WOULD be moving into his gills.

When i was like 7 my mom had me in daycare, and outside of the daycare there was a gigantic playground (ok i'm exaggerating a little bit. it wasn't gigantic, it was pretty decently big) And the teachers would let us go outside and play fairly often, and some of the kids would roleplay as shark boy and lava girl. I didn't know what that as at that time so i just played along.

I was a camp counselor at this ranch last summer and this was the only movie there (besides spy kids 3), so I slowly learned to appreciate it. And I even have a theory that after Max has his journal stolen and goes to sleep, the movie is just one of his dreams, but then the sad thing is that he's not actually happy on the end cause it will turn out just to be a dream, and he will learn that somethings are out of your power and he probably can't prevent his parents from being divorced no matter how hard he dreams for it.
I assumed the events of the movie were all part of a dream. It isn't? there's no cruel twist ending where it turns out that he was, in fact, dreaming?
After 5 years this is still my favorite nostalgic critic video ever!!!!!!
Fun Fact: Robert Rodriguez had to pay another person for the name Sharkboy. A wrestler named Sharkboy filed and got the copyright and trademark to the name "Sharkboy" before the movie came out, Sharkboy (the wrestler) was most famous for his run in Impact Wrestling (fka TNA) and being a parody of Stone Cold Steve Austin

I loved this movie as a kid. I think I glossed over the crappy parts and just enjoyed the cool stuff. Perhaps I was drawn to it because I was definitely a dreamer. Still am, really. I like writing, but I keep getting too self conscious and never write anything down.

I watched this as a kid and remember it being good. Now, how do I stop remembering?
This movie is a childhood classic in Latin America, it was played so many times by Disney XD that it was engraved in our memory, in fact once I dressed up as Sharkboy for hallowen. . . I made that costume by hand. . . with only 7 years. . . it was worth it, in Spanish many of the jokes are very well translated and I see the movie from time to time out of pure nostalgia, and because I still like it, I don't know why but it is bizarrely perfect, it represents very well what a child can create in it's dreams, perhaps because the script is based on the dreams of director Robert Rodriguez's son.

Ok, here’s what I don’t get, the entire movie Max is getting mocked and ridiculed by every other kid and adult around him for legitimately believing that Sharkboy and Lavagirl are real, but…why? I mean sure he’s believing something fictional is real but here’s the thing, *HE’S IN THE 4TH GRADE!* Meaning he at most is only 10 years old, I mean that’s the age where you still believe in Santa Clause and things like that, so realistically even if they themselves don’t believe in them don’t you think that Max’s parents/teacher would still humor him when he says that Sharkboy and Lavagirl are the ones who ate the cookies or when Max says that meeting the 2 of them is what he did over the summer? Because after all, he’s only 10, why is it so unreasonable to think that he would believe in fictional characters?

I saw this film twice. It was a great movie with adventure, excitement and comedy. It's a great family film. The film taught me that you have to make your dreams real. There's a lot of evidence behind that lesson. Max even said that at the end of the film. I'm pretty sure everyone else remembered that. Don't let your dreams be dreams. Make them real.

Man I still get nostalgia from this movie. I used to have the DVD for the movie which you could watch in 3D (the movie indicated when to put on your 3D glasses). Also Lavagirl reminds me of my sister since they both have the same curly hair
