Paint Pens Cheaper Than POSCA, but are they better?

Update: I have recently been trying to use the fine nib markers from this video, and they are terrible. They all use the same style plastic nib, and they dry out so much and are really hard to get going again. I would not recommend the fine nib markers from this video. However, the fine nib on the Magi is still working fine.

Wow. I was already so pleased you tested on both paper and canvas... then you brought in glass, and I thought, "oh that's a nice touch!"... then fabric: "oh yeah that's very useful to know"... then ceramic: "wow this is REALLY thorough"... then wood: now i'm just laughing wondering if there's anything else you'd possibly try! So incredibly thorough and helpful, thank you!

I just wanted to say, you mentioned you are not a professional, not an artist but that is COMPLETELY untrue. While you might not be employed as an artist you ARE completely an artist who is worthy of opinions and sharing them. I think its great that you do. It gives people who are just in the same boat of being a hobbyist artist a great idea of what to expect themselves. I'd rather see someone using a product who is like me versus a "professional". Its a much more realistic view of what we can all achieve and expect based on our shared level of experience.

I bought my daughter some Tooli-Art pens for christmas and she said they are just as good as Posca and she loves Posca pens 🙂
Fantastic and very informative video. Also, you say you are not an artist, your artwork is great and you look like an artist to me. My absolute favourite acrylic (brush) marker is the Karin pigment deco brush markers. They aren’t cheep but they are so lovely to use, I love them and bought every single colour! I definitely recommend them.

@@aussiecrafterdo you have hobby lobby where you live? I ask because there's a brand called masters touch that sells acrylic markers and I got them a few weeks ago and so far they've been great! If you have hobby lobby or can get them online I'd love to see you get them and try them out.
I have the Karin deco ones and i swearrr the paint comes out so good for like the first 3 minutes of using it although it starts getting dry so quickly then i have to let it sit for a while just so the paint can get back into the nib again. Does this happen to you too? Or do you know a way to keep it from doing this? Because they are so expensive and i really want to like them more 😅
@@sarahbaker648 Hi, I have noticed that some of the pens do seem to dry up really quickly, which is annoying. I tend to store the brushes nibs down (against the recommendation) and if they get dry, I’ll soak them in water for a few seconds then give them a really good shake before using them again. I do find one or two of the pens struggle with dryness. It is annoying, especially as the first 2 sets I bought, I never had this problem, then I bought all of the other sets and several of the pens do seem to dry out quickly. I guess that is the consequence of not being able to pump them, I wonder if other brands have similar problems. 🤔

For the pens that are individually wrapped, you can just hold the barrel in one hand, the cap in your other hand, and twist. The wrapped pops right off.

Thank you for sharing these with us! A quick tip that I learned from the frugal crafter is that if the bearings inside are stuck and won't mix the paint inside, is to drop them basically the height of an average table. Sometimes, it takes 2-3 times, but mine usually are just once. Obviously don't throw them around the room lol you'll end up painting your walls lol. Have a great day

I really love and adore all of your little quick canvas art when testing the pens. Especially the multi colors background and black negative monstera leaf! And the cactus 🌵 ❤!
As I watch this I keep having responses, lol. I love all the tests you did - the glass and fabric especially! I’ve struggled with “which ones to buy” and I got like a couple of a tons of brands, but they are largely seem the same at a small scale. This was a really great way to see them in action especially depending on what someone wants to use them for

I have always been keen to try paint markers on a canvas, as I have only really used them on Fabric, Bristol and Art Board. You've inspired me to try!
Quick tip, I usually just twist the top to break open individually wrapped markers, it much faster than trying to peel them.

I know this video is from quite a while ago, but thank you so much for the information! I’ve been wanting to try paint markers for the longest time. I have two fine tip poscas that I bought to add details to some of my other medium’s art. But they’re just too pricey for me to get a whole pack just to try out. I’m definitely going to try out the tooli art when I can! They have color packs that look absolutely perfect to start off with and they’re so affordable. I’ve never heard of them before so I’m so excited to try it out.

Fantastic video!! My daughter has been wanting Pasca Pens. But I just can't justify the cost for a 12 year old who tends to leave things outside, doesn't always know where things are, and let's others use her things and often. Some of them just don't care if they get destroyed! 😕 You have definitely given me some options. Allowing me to justify the cost and still get a quality pen. Now I just need to see what brands are available in my country.
I still highly rate and use the Magi (my top pick if you don't need a huge colour range), Tooli-art (if price is the most important) or Artship (if brush nib is what you want). 😉 All 3 available on Amazon.

Have you ever tried Life of Colour paint pens? It’s an Australian company and it looks like most of the paint pens work out to be about $3.25/each. I haven’t had a chance to try them but they come in So many different colour packs and nib types that they look really intriguing and fun.

If you want to try something different... ....leather/textile paint (ALPHAFLEX) from ALPHA 6 Corp. ...made un the US(Alphaflex paint pens and liquid in bottles). Giving ANGELUS paint some competition! A REAL Juicy rangw of colours. Very opaque even on black leather👍
Watching this while swatching the new anko paint markers (36 pack for about 16$. Theyre alright, one of the markers so far had a nib which was wrecked tho. Itrs fairly opaque on the black paper im using which is decent (though depends on the colour, some are juicier than others). And the marker nib size/and barrel size is a bit on the smaller side (more akin to a permanent marker or a felt) (And it does have a white at least) (says theyre alcohol based though, which huh?) (take all this with a grain of salt! i have limited experience with paint markers soo XD)

Posca is still my number one pick too, just not my only. Ten Hundred recently did a review of paint markers testing for the BEST not the cheapest. His review is 💯 %

I think you might of got a bad set from Bunnings because I bought them myself to, and after having them sit the right way around for a good hour or two. They worked really well for me. And they come in two different sizes as well.
I've had them sitting in the right position for months now,,,,, so I might have to go and test them again.
Haha, totally my hubby wouldn't be happy if I did this video. I don't have the artistro brush pens, but I do love their regular paint pens. Also their white in regular paint pens both the medium and fine tip, I have to say they tend to be more opaque than my only posca pen which is a white one lol.
It's interesting as you're not the first to say that. I would be interested in buying the regular Artistro🤔,,,, but I think I'm set for paint pens for awhile 😆😆
@@aussiecrafter I totally understand that lol. It is super easy to go overboard with art supplies isn't it? I do like the artistro pens though. They haven't given me any trouble either. I do have the issue with the ultra fine splattering on uneven surfaces, as they do have that plastic nib too. However, you can get a great thin line if you are super careful. I used mine on wooden slices last year for cmas. They turned out pretty good actually.
This was wonderful. But remember, we are all artists. Just because we don’t get paid doing something or others don’t like what we do, it’s still art.

For the normal anko paint markers there is a white in the pastel version as well as more colours

Tooli-art has sincerely been a discovery, I think I will try those on the short run since I don't feel confident enough to go towards Posca Markers (yet haha).

I really rate the Tooli-art, however, I wouldn't go for their fine tip as I've since learned from Rose Requin Crafts they use the plastic nib. The plastic nibs are terrible.

I thought they were decent until I'd used them a bit more over time and they constantly clog up and are difficult to get flowing again. It's their plastic nib that let's them down. I'm going to be getting some Arrtyx dual tip and brush paint markers soon and will be reviewing them so stay tuned 😉

I think out off the paint markers the brush tips chew up the paper the least.
