One thing that you didn't mention (and makes Mordin's death a little more heartbreaking): for all the other scripted cutscenes that use weapons, you're always using the "default" Alliance weapons.
But for shooting Mordin? You use the Carnifex... the same gun that he gave you when you recruited him back in ME2.
That's actually so fucked, I love that
To add to that, you don't make that call with the dialogue wheel. You have to pull the trigger yourself. That renegade interrupt is the same button as the trigger in combat.
And to punctuate the horror... they throw the gun away in disgust as they walk away.

There is one more scene where you use the Carnifex, the very end of the game, you wake up with it after getting blasted by Harbinger and you shoot Anderson with it.

I swear I've seen a video like this one before. This video went the extra mile, not content with just the "fewest companion survivors possible." Davey treated us to "the worst narrative outcome for everyone involved."
Davey is really good at doing that!
Like I said in the intro, most conversations revolve around killing off every companion ASAP (while hardly ever actually going into depth for rationale) which I just feel like is totally wrong. Was happy to prove to myself and hopefully to others that I can do so much worse than slaughtering all of my friends

What gets me is that if you get almost everyone killed, Joker just rattles off a depressingly long list of people that you got killed by that point. And the haunted forest is VERY haunted.
I have no clue why but my haunted forest was really fond of Kasumi. Like I swear to god she was at least two thirds of the voice lines, it was really dumb because her death line isn't very dramatic
29:08 that's not the Destiny Ascension, it's just a random Asari Destroyer. Note how it only has three prongs. The Ascension has 4, and it's also like 5x the size. If you let it die in 1 it never shows up again.
If you *do* save it in 1, then it totally dominates the scene when it shows up in 3. It dwarfs *everything* nearby, and has a few of those big destroyers as its wingmen. They look like little kids in comparison.

Is it sad that I'm pretty sure I know the name? Off of memory, I think it's the Cybaen Cruiser, a war asset from ME3.
An even worse part about the relays being destroyed: it would take years or even centuries (according to the codex) to travel the distance from relay to relay in FTL speeds. You could probably manage to get supply lines setup between local systems.... eventually. So better hope that the regions around your relay have enough resources that you can avoid starving to death and even have a chance of rebuilding because that devastation probably means no single system has the basics to sustain life.

Since trade became "easy" and "safe", a lot of very important, if not outright necessary goods are produced somewhere else. Even a good number of countries need food from others to survive, because we are used to do what we are good for in massive quantites, then buy the rest cheaper somewhere else while selling our own specialties. If tomorrow international shipping lines suddenly stop functionning it would be a chaos like we've never seen before, setting some countries decades back, easily. Why it would be different in the case of entiere planets ?
Especially since, if i remember correctly, the biggest human colonies aren't even at the 100 millions living habitants mark. For an entiere planet. And this is BEFORE the war and the final shockwave. So even if i have the same view than you about self-sufficiency, i'm pretty sure the majority of colonies would simply survive on a very basic level, pre FTL or even simply industrial, if they can't reverse-engineer fast enough how to build everything from scratch by themselves with what they have left. Which doesn't seems very likely for the majority of them (And we can be pretty sure than, viewing how the reapers attacked, the biggest colonies were also an early target, leaving them already in a poor state of survival.)
@@AbstractTraitorHero Mass Effect lore does establish that a lot of essential colony infrastructure is based on interstellar shipping using the mass relay system. Eden Prime, for example, is a major agricultural exporter. Large established colonies on nice garden worlds could probably get the major essentials either on-planet or from nearby systems, but others would really struggle with the loss of the mass relays.
@tanamassar4242 This, incidentally, is the main reason that Net Zero is such an existential threat.
This actually gives me an idea for a pretty interesting sequel series set in a post-Destroy galaxy where pockets of civilization have survived, cut off from each other by the vastness of interstellar space. After a few centuries of this, each civilization would have diverged culturally and technologically. Our game could start after someone manages to fix/rebuild the mass relays, allowing these isolated pockets of civilization to connect again.
Undefined shepard true, the best main charachter in any game, hands down
The game's reaction to Garrus identifying as Unidentified Shepard true was fitting.
As an idea: randomized playthrough. Every dialog choice is made by rolling a dice - this leads to a Bipolar-Disorder-afflicted Shepard and it's hillarious.
I wouldn't do it with Mass Effect again, but one idea I genuinely love is doing a blind playthrough of a game where I swap the language every ~hour or so to cause suffering and cringe to anybody who has ever played the game

Honestly both ideas sound amazing. I think the random playthrough would be extremely funny with some games like Fallout 3 where you can to something like give 20 bottles of water to the guy in front of Megaton and than nuke it. Also I like the Dragon Age idea, like have all of the text in random languages and have the audio in English so you hear how fucked everyone gets with your random choice that you didn't understand also sounds like a funny comic antic

3:07 is the perfect example of a mass effect 1 face.
oh how much time i sank into building a mass effect 1 face that didn't look like a hell goblin, and everytime i thought i was there in the character editor, when the game starts, you get this shot at 3:07 and despair comes crashing over you again.
I really hate the beards in the editor, I have no clue how else to put it than the beard looks like a texture slapped INTO the face rather than on the face and it looks so bad.
It's the lighting. The lighting in the character creator is wildly inconsistent with the lighting in most other parts of the game. Both are absolutely terrible, but both are terrible in completely different ways and a fact that looks okay in one might be literally monstrous in the other.
@@Anergyne I think a big part of it is also the limited camera angles in the creator. The angle of the shot at 3:07 is one that you can never see in the creator. With the limited head turning and tilting, instead of moving the perspective freely it is very easy to miss bad and freakish proportions for several of the sliders (the main one beeing the cheeks in that case) that only get revealed in the game itself.
I've never seen that death scene for mordin, mass effect is a series where I struggle to make the "bad" choices. That death scene just proves why. Holy shit that hit hard. Everything from "I MADE A MISTAKE!"
Also. "Being neutral is often the worse path", why yes, to borrow from a different game series that was started by bioware. "Apathy is death".

Tbf there's very little reason to not optimize a path other than fuck it. ME has the same morality problem as other games where it's either one extreme or the other, but in ME's case it's less fun to do the "evil" route

I must disagree with you on how you handled Konrad Verner. If you let him survive through Mass Effect 1 viewing you as a hero, when you find him again in Mass Effect 2 you can choose to shoot him in the bar. If you do this, he attempts to again go be a hero on his own, falls off a flying bus, lands in an energy depot, and is incinerated immediately. Much worse death than just getting shot.
Love the detail that you actually went through trouble of turning Kaiden renegade, immediately as you mentioned romancing Kaiden I knew exactly what you were going to do, but turning him into space racist is just icing on the cake, for some reason I didn't expect you to actually do it, it's kinda obscure and most people don't even know that this is an option
I liked Tali the most of the Romance partners. She was always just the nicest person i interacted with.

Forget this legitimately depressing ending and the journey we took to get there, the entire segment from 47:30 onwards is hilarious and iconic. I'm dying from laughter as we speak.
Tetanus. Or however you spell the thing that you get when you're stabbed with rusty metal. Horses carry that around, so if you have an open wound and are near horses/qreas where horses frequent, you may get it. But it's a very slow pathogen, so it's actually a challenge to get it that way.
I feel like watching this video might convince me to finally play mass effect to try and fix this tragedy as much as possible

I too love Garrus Vakarian.
That meandering trail of misery left in Shepards wake was incredible to watch. That made a normal renegade run look like an episode of My Little Pony.
The timeline where a fucking sith lord escaped Star Wars and, instead of trying to take over a galaxy, decided to make it a worse place than Kevduit's New Vegas nuclear wasteland to live in.
It's pretty impressive how the devs accounted for all the decisions you made, even if you would have no reason to pick them aside from morbid curiosity, even if it isn't always handled in the best way (Wrex randomly deciding to stand down on Virmire, etc.)
Also, why are there so many Renegade interrupts dedicated to just defending yourself? Such as against Kai Leng or the Illusive Man. I don't think it's particularly "Renegade" to defend yourself when someone is trying to kill you.
generally speaking renegade interrupts are used for actions that bring harm to someone else, while paragon interrupts are used for actions that give aid to someone else, in those instances (the big exception is the paragon interrupt where Shepard pistol whips Archer for no particular reason than because it's the only way they can fully communicate their disgust).
It's logical in that regard, but it causes some weirdness where some are just you being a dick or being a sweetie.
@RagnellAvalon Whoever decided to make hitting someone a Paragon interrupt should have been slapped upside the head for thinking it was a fancy way of saying "good". A Paragon wouldn't hit a prisoner, even if he deserved it and it was the right thing to do.
As for Wrex standing down, that's just softlock prevention. The devs couldn't be arsed to make a special script case for having just Tali in your party that didn't use the squad select menu.
I've not seen a good number of these options, but especially Mordin still saying "Had to be me. Someone else could have gotten it wrong." in so different a context was just chilling.
Seing this play through, i am glad that there are no super powers in real life, otherwise we would all be doomed if Davey gets his hands on them

To be fair, "war hero" is often just a euphemism for "former war criminal" who just happened to be on the winning side.
Though in this case it was protecting civilians by single handedly holding off an entire platoon.

I actually thought the way they did the Huntress story was cool. You're supposed to hear it over several trips to the hospital, which any normal playthrough would have you doing. I always looked at it as Bioware is so confident in their stories that they can relegate great material to a kind of easter-egg that only attentive people will find rather than slapping you in the face with it like "LOOK AT ALL THE COOL SHIT WE WROTE".
That said, I've played these games dozens of times over the years... heard that story tons of times... but I didn't know the girl was confirmed to be Joker's little sister. That's crazy. What's your source for that btw?
It was speculated since the planets lined up, and it was confirmed on Twitter by one of the writers. I do think it's neat but I think it'd be better implemented if you didn't have to go so far out of your way to hear every dialogue or if the dialogue was extended just a tad bit per session, it's just very obscure to search out

I like doing pretty much perfect playthroughs with most possible EMS and companions alive while being renegade, it’s called renegon. I just like the renegade attitude of Shepard much more, the voice acting and writing just feels better and more satisfying.
Miscellaneous notes before the rant: You CAN spare Colonists on Feros by 'killing' them with a Melee Attack. This counts as Non-Lethal even if they're at one HP and your Shepard has ever possible melee attack upgrade in the game. Garrus' shooting dialogue is ALWAYS available, even if you never took a shot. Weird that they never added a check for that but whatever... I'm fairly certain you can leave Zaeed to die even before the mission, but I'm not gonna start a new playthrough just to confirm that. Also... Damn, yeah, that Geth Prime is a UNIT, and it's really disappointing you don't get him normally.
Finally, the Council Rant: While it is true they play out the same, I have to say I like the Alternative Councilors a LOT more personality-wise. The Old Turian Councilor is still quite arrogant while the New Turian Councilor realizes the kind of position he's in and is clearly more negotiable (if more desperate). The Salarian Councilor is a lot more cunning (even if she doesn't get much time to show it) and the Asari Councilor is a lot more up-front than the Asari Councilor's more spiritual and metaphorical approach (even if they use the same model so it's hard to tell) Also that's not THE Destiny Ascension, as you can see a second dreadnought in the background. THE Destiny Ascension is a glorified number boost.
For the rescuing the Council... All of those points ARE true, but counterpoint: If Shepard WAS on Cerberus' Side, why would they intervene in the first place? TIM could send them somewhere else to cause chaos, and TIM can't influence them if the Citadel is under Council Control, whereas if Shepard WASN'T there, they'd be hostages and the Citadel would be under Cerberus Control. Even if Shepard WAS on Cerberus' Side... why not just march on the Citadel immediately after the Council Meeting? Why help the Turians and Krogan? I consider it doubtful TIM genuinely knows about the Genophage Cure because if Shepard WAS on his side, they could just bomb the tower and prevent the cure being deployed at all.
ALL OF THAT SAID: The game gives you more ending points if you spare them and the galaxy is a whole lot more trusting, so most people will Save the Council.
Overall this is still a great video and two hours well spent.

I do legitimately love how Cerberus is in this route, and kinda wish that they were more like this in the main game.
It'd give a chance to add a lot more depth to former Cerberus characters like Jakob (especially if he had to square up against legitimate terrorism he committed against innocent people as a member, as well as fight his former friends and squadmates), and would make a lot of the mistrust and/or hostility that other species have for humanity a lot more justified, as, well, they *don't* have rogue paramilitary terrorist organizations running around as rampant as Cerberus that just so happen to mainly target non-humans.
Like, in the base game, they're a threat, sure, but one you'd expect from a rapidly expanding new galactic power, growing pains, if you will. They need to be dealt with, but are clearly not a major force in the human society, at least not one any species would be justified in calling out specifically as suspicious.
But this Cerberus?
This Cerberus is outright more powerful then some species whole militaries, and regularly produce attacks that kill thousands, with an insane success rate and power for their "supposed" size. It'd be entire reasonable to suspect Cerberus was actually a secret branch of the Human military covertly striking at the other species to weaken them, ESPECIALLY if you instated a human council in the first game.
And if the missions that the person who apointed said council takes against Cerberus *coincidentally* always go poorly... well. It doesnt take a spymaster to put two and two together, and assume a Specture, nay, *Commander Shepard* is incapable of such repeated incompetence.
Especially if it gets out that the Commander then allied with the Geth and Sabotaged the Krogan.
The only hiccup any alien conspiracy theorist would have in unraveling a conspiracy theory to expose the human's plans to force a complete takeover of the entire galaxy is the fact Cerberus Killed Shepard's beloved Husband...
...Unless a certain cheating scandal befire his death were to become public knowledge.
What im saying is a stronger Cerberus has the potential to completely implode the entire galaxy's defense force if they do their job well enough, and aside from that being a legitimate threat, it also is just so, so fucking thematically appropriate abd satasfying that a terrorist organization causes the exact opposite of what they want to happen to happen, because of the sheer arrogance required to think that mass kidnapping, torture, murder, unethical experimentation, and other warcrimes like that were the path to salvation.
Upon seeing this show up in my notifications I am filled with pure dread and fear. Dear god Davey, what have you done in this game I hold so dearly.
I'm a big softy, so I appreciate players who can do all the worst options to create abominations like this playthrough so I can experience the evil flowing through me vicariously.
I've never played a mass effect game, but I watched the whole 2 hours of this and it was the most entertaining thing I've watched in a long while, probably since the pokemon war crimes. I have now bought the game and am downloading it as I comment this

Were it not for the fact that mass effect is very much not my genre it seems, I'd be doing the same.

A little update if someone sees this later, holy shit that was a really good trilogy. I chose the destroy shepard breathes ending, romanced Tali, and cured the genophage.
47:37 This is a bug caused by your combat drone. If it's deployed during a cutscene where you get x amount of squadmates. The system will think the drone is part of your party roster, but because there's no data for it in that sense. It'll freak out and use placeholder information. Re-deploying your drone should fix the issue.
Haven't played through the Trilogy yet, only like half of the third back when it came out. That unfortunately means I won't be watching what I'm sure is another high quality video from Davey Gunface, so I'm liking and commenting in partial compensation. One day I will come back and enjoy this video after experiencing the franchise for myself.
You overlooked the fact during the Citadel standoff with Udina, that the council is ALWAYS asking questions of where the Cerberus troops went, and it's actually Bailey who saves your ass, even if you play a perfect Paragon and talk everyone down.
He says "Cerberus was right here, but they beat feet into the Keeper tunnels when they figured out we were coming. I'll say it plainly councilor, Shepard just saved the lot of you...".
It would still take a lot more convincing than what happens of course, but i still feel that Bailey being there is just barely passable enough for me to buy the council giving you the benefit of the doubt
1:38:00 I've always thought the Samara quit game scene was kinda goofy because of the weapon she uses. The scorpion is a VERY high caliber pistol that doubles as an anti personnel grenade launcher. If she actually did that at that range her head would be a fine mist from either the sheer kinetic energy of the bullet or from a grenade going off next to her ear.

Somehow I think it may be better...? Just because having the Reapers help rebuild things would at the very least speed up the rate at which society is rebuilt to the previous cycles. That being said it probably wouldn't be long until every star is destroyed and every planet eaten.

I really love and appreciate this idea. A playthrough where you don't just go for any old bad ending, you go for every possible bad ending. For everyone. I didn't even know that Mordin death scene existed because I always help the Krogan, and now I am so glad that I never have. That messed me up. Also great video and well worth the over 2 hours of pain

Seeing the dragon age armor has me hopeful for a less horrible sequel, where everything is just as bad but smaller scales, creating an arguably more painful connection of games where the suffering is only beaten by the third game itself.

The engineer class has the best dialogue in the Omega DLC in three where you basically just BTFO someone trying to give you tech issues. It is hilarious.
Especially because on that playthrough I had been calling myself “Mr.Fix-it” because I thought engineer shep just viewed the world as a bunch of broken machines for them to fix.

Their actually did need to be a batarian companion I feel to humanize them.
Missing the Steve Cortez crash dialogue bug in ME3 is the saddest part of the episode.
The way Shepard just screams his name then just goes back to not caring is a masterpiece.
22:00 - Weirdly enough, the only way I found out about this was through ManyATrueNerd's Kill Everyone playthrough of the Mass Effect Trilogy, where he found this out and had to backtrack to grab Liara to make sure Wrex would die! Nice to see it getting utilized in a way to save Wrex on purpose

I don't know if you have realized this mistake or not but the asari ship at 29:09 is an asari cruiser, not the destiny ascension.
The destiny ascension on the wiki is categorized as a "super dreadnaught" flagship, an asari dreadnaught is a small destiny ascension and the asari cruiser is a ship used for securing the flanks of formations

Your color coded options are available depending on your total reputation, not how much you have of a specific one.
So if you have enough reputation you can pick either option but if you don't have enough it dosen't matter how many paragon or renagade choices you did

A Renegade run only needs to kill Eve, because keeping the data is Paragon. Sabotaging the cure or not isn't Paragon or Renegade.
I'm so glad Davey out here representing us Engineer Sheps! I loved that class for the minor fact that Bioware gifted you with class locked scenes. In a sea of combat badasses and biotic fiends, my Shepard wouldn't stand out if I was just another biotic or combat overlord. Combined with the choice of going with an Earthborn background with the Sole Survivor, I felt like I was THEE underdog during the Trilogy.

My Assets page is hilarious. Since I promoted every character once in the multiplayer, I just have 5175 points from Those Other Guys I Play As.

Edit: I have also run into the perpetually-screaming Cerberus agents in ME2. In my case, one got stuck between a potted plant and a wall, and the hit box was screwed up so I couldn’t kill him… meaning that I had to listen to that screaming for quite some time. A lot of agents liked to get stuck in walls, too…?

Also, in ME3 it doesn't matter whether you choose renegade or paragon dialogue choices. They both amount to one meter called reputation. Basically if you just talk to a ton of NPC's or squadmates during the game and do a lot of sidequests, it doesn't matter which dialogue options you choose, you'll have both renegade and paragon speech checks available no matter what.
Most of your charisma comes from Reputation - Paragon and Renegade account for a relatively small percentage.
Neural shock is absolutely BUSTED in me1, bypass Shields deal toxic damage and paralyze the target. (Engineer and sentinel have access in ME1.)
Spoiler: you can melt the matriarch in 3 SECONDS, by using neural shock, then lift, and finally wrex's carnage.

I'm gonna say this because I needed to brag somewhere about my useless achievement. I did every side mission, mined every planet and collected everything I possibly could in all three games.

If you go for more playthroughs, some of the QOL mods have unironically saved me so much more time than you could ever imagine. Nexus Mods have so many great options like more fast travel locations (no more elevator rides to the Normandy), minigame skips, and all sorts of neat stuff. 100% recommend
@@DaveyGunface I definitely should've looked more into mods when doing my first full playthrough. Only issue is that personally I get far too attached to characters so when the only options are a good ending or a bad ending in a game, I typically only do the good ending and leave it there.
..though given I'm watching this video, I do enjoy seeing OTHERS destroy the story in chaotic and absurd ways.

Personally, I think saving the Krogan without Wrex and Eve to guide them would be the worst. Krogan would breed out of control and end up wiping out all the other races and when deprived of other races to fight would turn on themselves in endless eternal war.
The only person I can think of that would get this ending unintentionally is DSP.

Talking to Javik, he says he intends to rejoin the rest of the protheans after the battle. If you had Liara die instead of Javik, then you could've had a more complete party wipe because of that.

29:09 That's not the Destiny Ascension, the Ascension has an additional spire on top of it which makes it into a giant Cross, this one is only a T shape though. It has the same central cannon accelerator but its definitely not the Ascension. You can even see a second "Destiny Ascension" in the background of the very same shot you showed, proving that its not a unique ship design.

I didn't want towatch this, I knew it wouldbe upsetting, make me angry and sad. you gave it a bit of humor, but in the end it was a tragedy. But that's what I signed up for, that's what you promised. The worst Mass Effect ending. And it made me appreciate the good times, the good paths so much more. You took us to the lows, to appreciate the highs, and you made it entertaining and engaging. As a cis hetero guy I don't romance Thane, but you gave me perspective on why Thane is important (I knew he was important just not how deep). As angry as I was with ME3s ending you made me realize how much myplaythrough did,thanks.

In mass effect 3, when I gave Dr. Conrad Verner the matriarch writings I collected in ME 1, after I got over the shock he was a god damn doctor, I knew mass effect really was something.
That whole sidequest was a goddamn trip
Conrad turns out to have a doctorate and to have written his Thesis on E-Zero, the Matriarch writings come back to actually do something and goddamn Jenna comes in to save Conrad's Life. First time I saw that entire exchange my jaw was pretty much on the floor
