Fisker Ocean Hyper Extreme Edition One review - Needs software updates but otherwise a decent EV.

  • One CZcamsr labelled the Fisker Ocean as “The worst car they’ve ever reviewed”. Is it really that bad?
    Well it’s not all perfect for sure, but actually nearly all its downsides are software related so could actually be fixed and updated to sort them out. The car itself I think is actually rather good. this family size electric vehicle drives nicely, has a huge battery, some interesting features and nice design details.
    It’s a big shame they seem to have released it before the software is really completed, tested and ironed out. It means all early reviews are often negative and no doubt this is ultimately part of Fiskers downfall. A shame, could be a good car. I just hope they get funding and finish the job!
    Thanks for watching.

      I think it makes sense for any automaker that hasn't made any serious investment into EV tech yet, maybe Mazda or Toyota who are just making a superficial effort currently or perhaps a niche manufacturer, like Ferrari maybe, who needs an EV model to bring down their fleet average C02 and prepare for the eventual ICE ban.

    While I do think MKBHD was willfully negative about this vehicle (almost as though he had an agenda?), he did have some valid points. This seems a more balanced review, but as others have pointed out, they are in a very precarious position financially. While I do like the styling and it's very much it's own thing, I think it's a very brave buyer who gets one.

    Huge potential but right from the beginning I simply could not understand how Fisker could do these cars for the relatively low purchase prices asked. Nicely styled, HUGE batteries and full of kit and made by a 3rd party company (who contrary to popular belief do not have a stellar reputation for building cars,). So should have been pretty expensive. Fisker has a terrible reputation for making a success of his car companies and I know it is difficult, but he seems like a dreamer, and not a business man. And so I think it proves with this car. A very very competitive EV market year on year. The market will have no time for EVs with dodgy software and no back up support.

      @@user-cofee the vast majority of parts won't be made by Fisker they'll be outsourced, the few bits that are (body panels, trim pieces and the like) will be easy enough for a good manufacturer to duplicate.
      Software is far more concerning, especially in an EV -as an example imagine if the CCS standard gets some kind of update that means all manufacturers have to release an update so you can continue charging - with a Fisker there would be noone to do that and you'd lose the ability to rapid charge.
      Software is so critical to EVs that owning one that has no ongoing support is a ticking timebomb.

    Why would ANYONE even look at a Fisker when it's second-hand value (on we buy ANY car) is £0... As even they won't buy it!
    Other than zero warranty, bankrupt company, dreadful software... Its got so much going for it..!!

    if they had left the launch for 6 months and modified the software but would not have been in trouble. However they were desperate for some cash coming in and reviews crippled them. The car looks so nice compared to others in the same class but buy this and your car needs fixing they may not be around and it is a computer on wheels.

    Whilst I dont always agree with MKBHD's car takes, it would be unfair to dismiss his point of view because he's a tech reviewer. More and more tech recently is being released with "features coming soon" (especially with AI products). That is poor for consumers and terrible for people buying cars, as Mr Mobile says, you should never buy something based on future promises.
    Even applies to Tesla's but they have a track record of delivering.

      @@Pinkfloyd86 because bankruptcy filings are a slow burn until filed. The legal wording, finances and similar take time to come up with. Without a major cash injection Fisker is done. Lucid has a cushion from investors and an SUV that will sell well coming out. Rivian while still bit rocky is looking the best of the rest. Henrik Fisker is a conman

    Software looks like it was made by an intern in about two days. Horrible design and UX. Look at those transition animations between the different screens (or complete look thereof). When he enlarges the nav the bottom third of the screen goes black even though it's in the light theme. Glitchy as hell! And no efficiency readout?! Laughable.

  • @hydrogreben9791

    Come on, how can you call this car decent if it has a launch counter?

    • @peedeegt
      @peedeegt Před 12 dny

      You realise that a LOT of cars have a ‘launch’ counter, right? This isn’t a new thing and a lot of manufacturers will void the warranty if they know you’ve been launching it. Always read the small print!

    • @eganeles
      @eganeles Před 12 dny +2

      It's a boost mode counter, not a launch counter. Per Fisker, they will examine the drivetrain to make sure it's sound and reset it. 564 hp with 514 lb-ft of instant torque is a lot....

    A decent SUV? LOL
    The company is on the verge of bankruptcy. Meaning updates to this unfinished concoction, future service, and parts will be impossible.
    In the US, Oceans which sold for $60K are now priced at $25K or so just to move remaining inventory. Edmunds has story of a $69K Ocean with 4,220 miles now worth $21K on the used car market.
    A person would have to be a complete imbecile to buy one of these things.
