    I remember a world when I never heard of an influencer. I just bought what I liked and felt comfortable spending my money on. Nothing has changed for me. I still don't listen to influencers or breakers when they try to talk me into a product, because they have no idea what I want or want to spend. People need to form thier own opinions and stop listening to others about what's right for them. There are too many followers and not enough ethical leaders in this industry .

      @tedjerdee1028 Před 27 dny +1

      That's exactly what I say when people post videos complaining about influencers. I don't understand people who hate influencers so much for simply expressing their 1st amendment right on social media.If I made a video with 0 subscribers telling people to buy Joe Burrow cards, no one cares. If someone with 10m followers does the same thing, they are some harmful danger. The amount of subscribers you have does not hinder your ability to do whatever you want within the confines of the law. I just find it funny how people get mad over OTHER people watching something they don't like

      @tedjerdee1028 exactly. I watch alot of content on youtube but I don't listen to them when it comes to telling me to buy or invest in something. Peer pressure doesn't work on a strong minded person.

      What's sad is that is what it is for kids in the modern hobby. When I was a kid(which wasnt that long ago), the kids in the hobby collected cards. We traded, collected sets, favorite players, etc. Now every kid I see at a show couldnt care less about collecting, their only drive in this hobby is money.

    Great points, but the title of your video says “influencers” and you mainly talk about breakers. I don’t think anyone is using those terms interchangeably. I understand breakers could be influencers but that’s what you think when you say “influencer” (mojos, roth, sports card investor, etc.). Click bait or just taking a shot at influencers?

    Ive been in this hobby since 1986. I’ve been burned by breaks. I’ve been burned by chasing the big hits. This is why I only collect a handful of players key cards and maybe an autograph. I only buy on the “secondary” market like eBay, COMC or fellow collectors. I’ve learned through the years that building my collection that way is the most successful. Anytime you play with fire more than likely you will get burned or eventually burnt out

      Its the era of social media. Thats the only place people get information and they’re too lazy to do any research themselves, and assume influencers know better than them. If someone puts in the work to learn, they’re not easily influenced.

    You are not wrong, and good valid points to keep newbie collectors aware. You have a large platform and have every video as an opportunity to reach a lot of people. Making statements grouping a topic or subject together is not helpful unless you have all the data. Blanket statements are not healthy in any conversation, that is the only issue I feel the hobby faces, this video, anything I post or anyone else. A simple fix can go a long way. So many good people in the hobby NOT doing those things just do not have the reach like some channels do. Now lmk when you come to the national, you owe me a drink. 🍻

      Difference is that content isn’t shoved in your face and cards aren’t wildly available. In the 90s, ultra rare inserts and parallels were like unicorns and didn’t seem attainable so people weren’t truly chasing them (unless you were an adult with a lot of money).

  • @area51sea
    @area51sea Před 28 dny +2

    The question is fanatics is manufacturing consent. So all these influencers need fanatics products to make thousands off the cases. And fanatics just announced a social credit score for these breakers and store owners. Well China has a social credit score and if you want credit , housing etc and you had some critiques of the Chinese government your loan could be denied. And if you criticized fanatics a little to much you can’t get their cases to 10 x your money on your breaks.

    • @TheSportsCardDad
      @TheSportsCardDad  Před 28 dny

      Is that true about the 'social credit score' with Topps? Had not heard of that

    • @area51sea
      @area51sea Před 28 dny +1

      @@TheSportsCardDad if you watched Tuesdays sports card radio and the interview Imran, he said they had a blue print for the allocation of topps and that will depend on your social media presence and how your store looks. Etc. that isn’t fanatics directly saying we will have a social media score for who we give products to, but essentially saying they will have one. So who knows expect fanatics how they will exactly go about tracking it. So these guys got the message and that’s why all the sudden unlicensed products are great now. They know fanatics will soon have a monopoly on the hobby and if you want to be the middleman that makes thousands off their products you better get inline.

    Most breakers are effectively 'turd polishers'. They are offering the worst gambling product period imo - one they do not even have to carry a licence for - and they constantly have to make the 'hit' look way better than it really is because even with a decent hit it's mostly still a losing proposition. Often up to 90% of the money is flushed, and about the worst you'll hear is "that wasn't the best box" or "that wasn't what we were looking for". No shit. We just got bent over badly. Again! And when a card is pulled that might give a 30% roi it's time to turd polish. "BOOM". "CONGRATS". It's truly nauseating and we should call them out. I get people have to put food on the table but there should be a limit to the level someone will stoop to in order to do that. It's false and it's dishonest. There's very few if any who call it straight. Prostitutes should be seen in a more favourable light than breakers. At least there is no pretence. I'd love to see breakers discharge a gamble responsible warning and call boxes as they are. I once heard Rich Layton have the gall to describe a 2018-19 Prizm hobby 1X box break ( cost 9K) as "a fun break". Even if you had graded the better cards there's no way you could've got back more than 2K. Imagine the level of sliminess required to call losing 7K in 10 minutes as 'fun'. That's next level turd polishing. The good people in this hobby are the salt of the earth. The vast majority of breakers and influencers are not salt of the earth types.

    Noobs having a bad experience with a break and leaving the hobby is a good thing for the collector. Just like last time the bubble burst on a boom, the noobs fled the hobby in droves and prices came back down to earth. All the fools saying "10x the hobby" are idiots if they think its gonna make their individual hobby experience better. Collectors want this version of the hobby to die.

    • @TheSportsCardDad
      @TheSportsCardDad  Před 27 dny

      @@TheSportsCardDad I dont see the additional collectors. In fact I see less collectors. Vast majority of the new people got in the hobby simply to chase dollar signs.
