  • Clutchless shifting on a dirt bike? Shifting gears without a clutch? Here's the truth about clutchless shifting on a dirt bike. After a dirt bike video on changing gears I uploaded a while ago started to gain some traction and some serious outrage about transmission damage etc, I decided to answer some of the questions and go over some points. Don't take this video too seriously. I'm just having some fun with it and I think the video needed a response.

    bro im 100% with you. I rarely use the clutch to change gears, when im just cruising i might without knowing but most commonly when riding hard or racing ill just bang gears while on full throttle without using the clutch, with 127 hours of doing that on a 450 it still has no signs of wear. ITS LITERALLY IN THE MANUAL THAT THE CLUTCH IT USED TO "MODULATE THE POWER" not change gear. Amazing video as always man

    Had a feeling this video was bound to pop up haha. I was rather fed up with replying to people who wanted to argue why clutchless shifting is bad on a bike when they couldn’t provide any logical conclusion as to why it is necessary to use the clutch while shifting. But you made a great point in this video. Ride your own bike how you want to, shift how you want to. I tried to explain to people that if you don’t use the clutch while shifting, it’s not going to cause any harm. But some people will still argue until they are blue in the face for no other reason than to feel the satisfaction that they are somehow superior in their self-proclaimed knowledge. Can’t please everyone I suppose.

    @H4nssoon Před 4 lety +29

    When I saw that video I felt that it has to be damaging your transmission to shift without clutch. Same thing as alot of other people were thinking. Instead of commenting though I did some research and it turns out I was wrong.
    I think the reason is alot of people like me (Who doesnt know exactly how a transmission works) have kind of the same theory about what's going on in the transmission when you're pulling the clutch or changing gears. But the point is we obviously doesnt know how it works and I don't get why some people are trying to argue about something they don't understand until they've done atleast some research.

    Only use the clutch in three scenarios.
    1. Shifting into gear from a dead stop.
    2. The starting gate.
    3. Clutching out of corners.

    Great video, been seeing this debate pop up a lot recently as well. Just FYI, MOST cars utilize a transmission with a very different shifting mechanism in the form of a synchromesh. Bikes use a sequential dogbox transmission. Dogbox transmissions are literally designed so you don't always have to use the clutch. It's design is bred from racing and you can 100% shift without the clutch if desired. Cars with a synchromesh (dumbing it down here guys) rely on friction materials to keep the next gears close to speed. If clutchless shifting is done properly, yeah you might not damage the transmission, BUT it's certainly not guaranteed. Very few cars have a dogbox type trans, mostly specialty built race cars. You can easily chew up gears, damage synchros, and bend/break shift forks in a non-dogbox synchro car. There's 100% a proper way to shift clutchless on bikes. 25+years riding, building, racing cars and bikes, former 17yrs Senior Master Ford tech/Roush Certified/Ford GT certified/8rys former Toyota certified/2yrs former Kawi certified.

    Now I get this was for dirt bikes more then other bikes. With that said, most factory sportbikes are coming with quick shifters now a days, it doesn't release the clutch for you to shift. They cut the power for a millisecond once the computer senses pressure on the shift rod. Oh and they now auto blip for clutch less down shifts. Dirt vs street, the transmissions are the same style. Stopping and starting and or when ride conditions call for it are the only times you need to use the clutch lever.

Did two full motor rebuilds in that time with the stock tranny still having 400hrs on it. To this day I do everything by feel. If I’m riding sand when there’s a lot of load on the bike, I’ll slightly pull in the clutch for a split second to let a bit of load off to find a gear (still with the throttle wide open). I’ve never had any transmission problems on my bikes. A a sequential gearbox. Not an H pattern😂

    I'm currently building a slider (speedway bike) for my son. You don't have a traditional gear shift because when the bike is crossed up and laid down in the corners, there's no room for your foot.
    The up shift is spring-loaded on a cable to a handle bar lever separateto the clutch lever. You physically can't use the clutch to shift gears with this set up.
    All the people arguing with you in the comments just don't know what they're talking about dude. You tried to.teach them but they chose ignorance.

      That's pretty much the only reason to use the clutch. If you don't use the clutch when you shift up into first gear then it will stall. Also low power at low rpms assuming you have a smaller cc 2 stroke because they have a narrow powerband. Unless you mean like it barely moves at low rpm that might be a problem lol

    I just recently got a 97 kx250 and had to change the 3rd and 4th cogs as the dogs on the 3rd gear cog had gone smooth on the edge that interlocks 4th cog I can only assume it's coz the person didn't let off the gas before shifting. Thought on this anyone ?

    You can shift with, or with out clutch. But how many people out there drag racing there dirt bike? To save .005 sec . I always up shift with clutch, down shift with out. When coming fast at corner I drop sometimes 2 gears down, no time for clutch. I had my 250 2stroke for long time. Down shifting with out clutch will not hurt ur gears. I think pro will shift with out it. This is same as 2stroke vs 4 stroke. 50% will say one thing and 50% other. Both ways are sounds good. Soon we will all ride electrical bike. No clutch :). So use it while u can.

    • @MidWestMX
      @MidWestMX  Před 5 lety +4

      A 125 will make you an awesome rider but hard to handle. A 250f is a lot easier and smoother for a first time rider. Easy maintenance also

      Depends on where your riding. A yz250f is a track bike and is difficult on trails. A yz250fx is great on track and trail. And very easy to ride. Yz250fx would be my choice. Unless you plan to ride mx only.

    • @michaelcharette5677
      @michaelcharette5677 Před 5 lety +1

      Let me be clear. It’s not impossible on trails. Just not as easy especially for a beginner on trails. It will be a rougher ride and more prone to stalling when navigating tight areas.

    i remember being 5 years old and my dad saying "just hit it up and hit it down. These things are made for racing, you don't need the clutch unless you need to get the revs back up or do a wheelie."
    My question is where are your fathers? and if they went out for smokes and never came back, who are these goobers that taught you how to ride?

  • @andrewtheterdbowling6629

    do you have to rev then shift down

    I've never used the clutch after 1st gear. Never had transmission issues. I don't understand the die-hard "you must use the clutch or else destroy your bike" people. Perhaps certain bikes don't handle it as well

    Flat shifting is the future 👌🏻 my current bike yzf 250 I do not shut the power off changing up I shift when the power peaks off at the top of the revs. Only some bikes are built well enough to handle the abuse. (KTM not a chance) But there is precious time and grip to be gained doing this method. Check out his last video you'll hear the seamless gear changing as I'm riding. It's a race bike and I race. Going fast is goal number 1!
