  • Uni-ball has put a lot of effort in to the One ( amzn.to/3HNfmB5 ) gel pen over the past few years. It's emerged as a popular gel pen that competes with other art-focused pens, like the Signo DX and Pilot Juice and Juice Up.

    Just picked up a F earth tone edition from a stationary store. Opening and closing feels perfect and clicking it on and off is really satisfying.

    I've recently rediscovered Uni One refills as drawing pens. The black ink is uniquely dark, even more so than my art pens, and it really isn't wet ink at all, it doesn't have feather or bleed issues. The frequent skipping is a major downside and initially made me dismiss it, but my return to it came from evaluating control, and among ball pens, there aren't many that produce as controlled a line. If the paper is decently heavy and smooth, the skipping is tolerable. It's a pretty dainty refill as those things go. As well, a common issue when drawing with refills aiming for smooth ink flow is that when repeatedly going over a line, the pen loses its friction as the contact becomes ink-on-ink, making it feel soapy and creating a lot of overshoot. This was a huge issue with the original Signo 207, and is much better in both the One and the 207+. The 207+ is my current all-round favorite refill - it's very skip-resistant and makes some pretty consistently juicy lines - but the One has an added role for details and highlights.

      Thanks for the thoughtful content. The super dark pigmented ink is great but many of us have dismissed this pen because of its skipping problems

    I think the most interesting change with the One F is that the body can’t fit Jetstream refills, unlike its predecessor. I’ve never used the One but I did buy the One F Yellow recently and tried inserting the refill from my Jetstream and it didn’t fit at all.

    The stickers actually say that the refills are UMR-038S and UMR-05S. I guess the UMN is the pen model number instead, so maybe they updated the ink formulation for the entire One lineup (it’s clearly darker now)? I really don’t like how skippy the original One refill is, although I love how the ink doesn’t bleed through even the crappiest paper

    1:18 I thought the Sarasa had pigmented ink... the ones I own (Sarasa Grand and vintage colors) are definitely waterproof.

    I got a pack from Staples, the 0.7 with 4 black and 3 blue, and so far the few that I have used do skip quite often, which is a shame because the actual writing is great when they don't skip! I did switch one to an energel refill which fits and I love it because I really like the look and feel of the barrel. I am going to try with the Sarasa Dry refill as well, which writes great so I think that will be another good hack.

    An elephant in the room is the cartridge size. It uses Chinese style refills, which are narrower in diameter than traditional Uni Signo cartridges, which in turn are generally interchangeable with Jetstreams, Pentel LRs, Paper mates, and Zebras. Thus, quite unfortunately, it makes this plastic pen much less appealing.

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  Před 2 lety +2

      Yea this is a good point. Refill capacity is something I haven’t gotten into because it’s quite difficult to quantify. I’ve looked into testing longevity and it’s challenging

      @AlexD12345 Před 2 lety +2

      @@unsharpen Sorry, but I have to clarify my point, which was about refills compatibility/interchangeability. Pens that take common refills without any modification are much more practical and useful than the ones that require unique/expensive/or hard to find cartridges. Uni One F requires a very specific and uncommon refill.

      I don’t understand. I have one of these I bought off of A exp didn’t like the .28 in it and swapped a .07 out of a uni signo into it. So I don’t understand. Further I have put a pentel refill in my standard uni ones.

  • @tompov227

    I'm really not a fan of the Uniball One which is a shame because I love the Uni Signo its literally my favorite line of pens. I hope uniball doesn't abandon the signo in favor of this. Plus the Signo ink is "Uni super ink" it was already chemical, water, and fade resistant and in my opinion MUCH smoother and more consistent than the weird gummy ink in the uniball one. Honestly, maybe I just got a couple of bad ones (I don't think getting 5 bad pens is really a good sign anyway) but everyone seems to like them, I do not find them smooth at all

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  Před 2 lety +3

      I literally just bought a set of Uni-ball One's, a set of Uni-ball Signos in 0.7mm, a set of Pilot Precise V5 Deco's and normal V7's, and a set of G2's in 0.7mm. And what I discovered was that out of all of these roller-ball gel pens, I would say that the Uniball Signos and the Pilot Precise are almost the exact same performance. They seem to lay down ink in a similarly generous and consistent manner with no breaks. The G2's actually put down more ink than I wanted and got a little splotch/blotchy, whatever the right word is there, and as for the One's, I have to agree with you.
      I was really disappointed in these, especially considering that they cost more than all the others, yet, were the worst performing of them all. When they work, yes, they're on par with the Signos and Precise lines, but the problem is that they don't always work. I tested all of mine, and if you're just streaking lines across a page, yes, they won't fail, but when you start writing, where you need to pick the tip off the paper and place it back down, for whatever reason, it fails to lay down ink and I end up with a word where sometimes half the letters are half missing.
      They're unusable for writing. What a shame. I love the clip, it's probably the best thing going for it, and yes, you can always throw in Signo refills if you want to keep the body, but the One gel inserts are trash imo.
      I also have a Jetstream 4 on the way (not the 4+1, although I really wish they made a Premier or Prime version of the 4, but unfortunately they don't, it's literally the only type of pen they don't make a Prime version of...go figure it's the one I want the most, just my luck), and I'm excited for it, because I generally like good ball-points, especially the Jetstream's rather than these roller-ball gels.

    • @eternalmonsoon8103
      @eternalmonsoon8103 Před 2 lety +1

      This may well be stating the obvious... Very much depends on the paper used as well with gel pens. If you want a universally consistent pen use a ballpoint. I just got a jetstream edge to try out a finer pen and it was a reminder how inconsistent these type of pens can be. I love it when it works but it is amazingly inconsistent as to what paper it gets on with. OK with Rhodia R, Tomoe, Muji. Impossible to use with Mnemosyne (Maruman) and others.

    • @arapaimagold8088
      @arapaimagold8088 Před 2 lety +1

      @Eternal Monsoon
      I personally hate ballpoint as I need to put more weight down when writing with it. Unless I put a writing pad behind the page, it will ruin the fresh paper under the one that I use for writing.
      As for Uni One, it didn't have that generous inflow like Signo DX. However it's very easy to create thin lines when writing in cursive. Just lean the pen angle and will create thinner line. Can be good for some, and can be a trouble for fast writer.
