Our dear friend (and former smoker) Mike White created this spot, which won the Public Service Announcement Clio award in 1980. Mike worked for many health agencies and organizations, including the US Public Health Service and the CDC. He persuaded Lucas Films to allow the Star Wars characters to be used for this campaign to reduce childhood smoking. He passed away at age 83 on April 19, 2020, in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Not to mention, even if you are a Droid, smoking can make you get very dirty, and I'll bet it's not good for your electrical components, metal, or paint. So don't smoke, R2-D2!
I used to squeal with joy when this and the other one (about vaccinations) would come on. I couldn't get ENOUGH of those droids. (I love the way Artoo is cheerfully whistling to himself as he smokes.)

@@lilyo5248 his right leg definitely reflects the light a bit different from the rest of his body. The only reason some people can’t see it is because they process color slightly differently, are looking at too dim a screen for their lighting conditions, and/or the old-school video quality
@@AndrewMarinoOfficial anthony himself has talked about this.. depending on the camera angle/lighting the silver leg can reflect the gold one, ambient colors in the room, etc, (which is why it doesn't always look silver in some shots even in the original film)..

I can whistle R2D2’s dialogue from this commercial completely accurately thirty-five years after it aired. Sometimes I wonder why my brain holds on to random flotsam like that, but then I realize that given a choice, I would RATHER have R2D2’s dialogue from a cheesey anti-smoking PSA memorized than something useful. "A message from a distant galaxay far, far away". Since Star Wars is taking place in the future, the word "Galaxay" may have been referring to the Samsung Galaxay phones that do exists today!

I got in his line and the minute he walked in the room, he walked past me and I said, "Hey, Mr. Daniels! I made you something!" I gave him this piece of fan art that I made that showed C-3PO saying the speech he gives at 0:43 with the text "C-3PO SAYS" preceding it. He was beyond happy to receive it and he read it out loud to the line as C-3PO and everyone applauded, including me. Super nice guy. I always loved C-3PO as a Star Wars character and this makes me love him even more.
I was expecting this to be cringey or be about marijuana but it really isn't bad at all, I like this. it's just a little weird seeing/hearing these characters doing a message like this.
