Will PCIe 3.0 Kill It? | RX 6500 XT vs. 2022

  • Benchmarking the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card against 12 popular and recent games on an average gaming PC.
    It’s been a while since a GPU has received the kind of critical evisceration that the RX 6500 XT has seen. On its release in January 2022, it lacked some crucial features that comparable graphics cards have, but was pretty much the only sub £200 port in the Scalper storm.
    Now, in May, I’ve finally gotten hold of one to see for myself whether the criticisms are valid or whether the RX 6500 XT has an uphill struggle ahead of it. What won’t count in its favour is my test PC’s lack of PCI-Express 4 compatibility….

    It's a pretty disappointing card overall and while there will be people who will defend this card and tell people to just move to a PCIe 4.0 based system, about half the people I know can't even afford to move out of systems pre-Ryzen and 8th Gen Intel Core, sometimes even older. If it was PCIe 4.0 x8, it'd probably not be as big a hit if people were to use this card with older/lower specs but the biggest issue I see is that we barely got any performance improvement from what we had a few years back.
    Sure the Scalper Pandemic and lack of chips were a big factor but we at least should be expecting AMD to aim for RTX 3050 levels of performance at this price point

    I noticed in the games that you have mentioned the effect if VRAM goes over the limit, it would be interesting if you do a side by side comparison of the fps and frame time is you deliberately go over and under the VRAM in same graphic settings.

    1) The VRAM usage, is it the first or second column in the GPU line? 2) Some Nvidia GPUs got show the PCIE lane usage in gpuz, does the Rx 6500 have this in gpuz as well?

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  Před 2 lety +1

      First column is total VRAM allocation, second is VRAM usage per process.
      GPUZ only shows that the GPU is PCIe x4 4.0, nothing more detailed than that.

    3.0 PCIE will definitely limits the 4.0 card performance... Still tho, During the time of the shortage it was somewhat a relief in my opinion for those looking to buy/built a budget gaming rig... It would have been better if instead of downgrading its bandwidth, AMD could've made it 3.0 card rather than 4.0... Low profile cards like this can definitely goes into Optiplex kinda rig for tempo usage... It's just my observation tho... Cheers!!

    I actually considered buying the RX 6500 XT, because it was available for an attractive price and I don't want to buy a really old RX 580... but 4 GB Vram are simply too little. That's why I spent just a bit more and got a used GTX 1660 Super.

  • @TheSektor13
    @TheSektor13 Před 2 lety +2

    AMD really don't want you to build budget PC with their parts.
    They released all "NEW" line of CPUs 5500, 4500 and 4100 with only PCIe v3 support.
    Best budget would be 11400 or 12100 (f) from intel and nothing from AMD.

  • @fedepede04
    @fedepede04 Před 2 lety

    The problem is many don't know what the problem is with this card.
    The speed and power of the GPU is not the problem, the problem Is the bus interface (pcie) as soon as you exceed video memory, the card starts to struggle , the only way to make the game run fine is to lower the graphics setting (especially the texture pack).
    And it will run fine again.
    You can compare it to have to little system memory and the computer starts using the hd as system memory. The whole computer starts to lack big time
    The big problem may not be now, but it will be worse in a couple of years, when the texture pack is getting bigger and bigger.
    But if you know these problems and can live with them and don't mind binning your graphics card after a couple of years.
    Then it can probably be an ok card for now. But don't expect that it will last as long as the 200/300/400/500/Vega/rdna 1 series did.

  • @snakeplissken1754
    @snakeplissken1754 Před rokem +1

    In all honesty, AMD should be aware of surveys like done on steam to see what kind of cpu the majority of people have. That alone would make it a "crime" to wire it up for only pcix4 instead of x16. The Fact that they don´t really have much that offers PCIE4.0 itself aside the very latest stuff is just incompetence at its finest.
    Like WHO right in his mind buys a whole new computer just to get PCIE4.0 so his 200 bucks GPU can run at its peak performance? That is something you could expect a rtx 4090 buyer to do without a second thought... but on a budget/mid level card? This is the market that appeals the most to the mainstream, to those that may look for an upgrade from their aging mid range card for a new one... and then they get the middle finger from amd with a build in bottleneck that requires to buy a new board/cpu/(ram) in addition to get rid of.
    Sorry AMD but you guys must really have been on drugs with that decision.

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  Před 2 lety +3

      I’m 99% sure the answer is no. I don’t know what your local market looks like, but you can get a hell of a lot of performance in the UK for £200. Look out for the following:
      GTX 980/980Ti
      GTX 1060 6GB
      GTX 1070
      GTX 1650 Super/1660
      R9 Fury/Nano
      RX 480/580/590
      RX 5500 XT 4GB
      The older cards (980 series, R9 series) have flaws, such as 200w+ power consumption and driver complications with some games, but they will still match or beat the 6500 XT for similar or lower prices, and have Displayport & HDMI connectors too.

    the 980 ti doesn't have the dx12 support to run halo infinite. System minimum requirements is 10 series and above. Its like saying my xeon chip can't run this game good even though on paper it has more power than this new cpu. Yeah but that xeon doesn't have the instruction set support to run that game well. Result performance is all over the place and not consistent.

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  Před 2 lety

      The 980 Ti has DX12_1 support, as do all Maxwell 2.0 GPUs. DX12 is a hard requirement for Halo Infinite- if a GPU doesn't support it, the game doesn't start.
      The minimum requirements don't say "10 series and above", they say GTX 1050 Ti, and that is presumably the lowest end nVidia GPU the developers have validated the game with.
      I tested the GTX 1070 in Halo Infinite recently. It still performs about the same as this otherwise unimpressive AMD GPU!
      EDIT: I'm very tired and stupid, I originally wrote about rolling back drivers, which is for GOTG not Halo Infinite. I've been benchmarking GOTG for the last few hours and it's clearly affected my brain!

    This card is a slap in the face for consumers. I could deal with the poor performance and missing basic functionality if it cost what it should ($50-$80). But the performance loss was not a trade off for cost savings. The performance reduction generated basically no cost savings and we’re almost strictly just to make the card unappealing to play games on. Then AMD tries to sell it to me at a 320% mark up. I know corporations aren’t our friends and there is a small amount of bad behavior that is just inherent to a system like this, but this felt like an especially personal ‘fuck you’ to people who won’t or actually can’t afford the outrageous prices of modern cards.

    • @snakeplissken1754
      @snakeplissken1754 Před rokem

      The only thing that is even more infuriating is that despite all its shortcomings it is still the "best" option for the price and that is simply cause ndivia ceo has his head so high in the clouds with a nose full of crack he can´t even see the ground anymore and believes himself to be a god that shouldn´t be bothered with making deals with peasants. They can buy the used second hand leftovers.
      Intel´s arc is a light in the dark in that regard... even so you need rebar or otherwise it´s the same garbage... but that is at least not as rare as pci4.0 with mainstream gamers.
