    Thanks for showing us that the bark can be kept on! We have a Hazeltree/Bush and the branches grow straight from the base. They are almost perfectly straight and average eight feet. Several years ago I harvested one and tried to remove the bark but just got to the cambium layer. Now, several years later it looks the same...nice and tight! I thought it would be easier to remove with time. After watching this, I am going to sand it a little and apply a sealer. Over the years, I harvested two other sticks and kept them indoors and the bark is as firm as the day I cut them. The texture feels like 36-grit sandpaper and I like it but always felt that for the health of the stick, it should be removed. Now for Story Time: Last year we beat the chipmunks to the draw and got about two pounds of nuts. Went through the routine of removing the outer layer and drying them for a couple of weeks. One morning all were gone! A chipmunk must have made it into the house and took all of them!! We have never seen a chipmunk at the house where the theft occurred but we sure hope that is who the thief was!‽‽ Life in the country.

      Thanks for your comments. Yes, when the bark remains tight, after drying out a while, you can sure leave it but it should be sealed with something. Great story about the chipmunks. We are country folks to and love it. Life in the country is great!

    I've always liked walking sticks with the bark on. It adds the potential for more character to show.
    Love this one Mr. Dennis!

      I think I will be leaving bark attached as often as possible. There are some with loose bark and it has to come off. Thanks, Sis, for the comment.

    Just so y'all know, branches& trees cut in winter, keep their bark. Cut in spring or summer, bark comes off. That is a good tough wood! Should last from now on!

      I agree with the winter bark staying on most of the time. When picking a stick from my stockpile, I can't always remember the season I picked the wood in. My rule is; that the right end of my standing sticks are the oldest and they are left to dry for at least a year or more. So, when I see a stick on the right end that still has the bark attached, I can safely assume that the bark will stay on. I agree that if you want the bark to stay on for a while, take it during the winter. Sticks lying on the ground don't count because they may have fallen in the summer.
      Thanks for your comment.

    I like the bark on look but I’m partial to a skinned stick with a real fine finish.

      Most of my sticks are skinned. I just like to show what is possible. Thanks for leaving a comment.

    Dennis, how long should a walking stick be?

      It’s a matter of preferences! I’m 6’ and like mine about 56”

    That turned out very nice! Love the bark. Is the Waterlox a urethane or lacquer? I've also used a spar urethane on some of mine.

    • @OzarkArtsandCrafts
      @OzarkArtsandCrafts  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks, Stephen. I'm not totally sure, but I think it is more like a urethane than a lacquer. It has no smell so I doubt it has any lacquer in it at all. It is a Canadian product and I like how it looks on any kind of wood. I've tried most urethane, lacquer, and shellac mixtures and I like the Waterlux most of all. Thanks for the comment and keep on, keeping on!
