- Not long ago, I saw the music video for "Hurt" by Johnny Cash for the first time, and I was blown away.
I knew I had to make a piano arrangement of this song - so here it is!

With this sheet music, you can play "Hurt" by Johnny Cash on piano!
It's an accurate, carefully created piano arrangement of the full song.
The entire melody is included in the piano part, so it makes for a perfect instrumental / piano solo cover.
"Hurt" was written by Trent Reznor. He recorded it with his band Nine Inch Nails for their second studio album "The Downward Spiral" (released in 1994).
In 2002, the song was covered by the late Johnny Cash, and included on his last album "American IV: The Man Comes Around".
In February 2003, "Hurt" was released as the album's second single - just seven months before Johnny Cash passed away.
The accompanying music video won both a Grammy and a CMA Award for best video of the year, and was named the best video of all time by NME!
"Hurt" became one of Johnny Cash's most popular songs, with critics praising his deep voice, and the sincerity of his performance of Reznor's dark lyrics (which include references to self-harm and heroin addiction).
Trent Reznor was blown away by Johnny Cash's version of the song:
"I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure."
Needless to say, "Hurt" is a wonderful, emotional song to play on the piano!

FULL LYRICS:
[Verse 1]
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
[Chorus 1]
What have I become
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
[Verse 2]
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
[Chorus 2]
What have I become
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way - Hudba
Trent said "When I heard John's version of Hurt, I knew the song was no longer mine." Its an amazing and beautifully painful song, when compared to the parallels of John's life at the time he recorded it. Rest in peace John & June Cash
Great cover I enjoyed listening to this. The Jonny cash version is such a sad cover especially knowing that he died shortly after releasing this song
Indeed! I think the music video is an incredible masterpiece, and absolutely heartbreaking.
Thank you for the feedback!
This actually wasn't his last song
@@voight5771 nobody said it was his last, but out of curiosity, what was his last?
@@hallomee4801 The last song he wrote was "Like the 309", but it was released after his death. Hurt is the last song released before his death, being the last single of his last album, America IV.
I don't cry anymore because of this song
Yes! Finally a good piano cover which does the original justice!
Thank you for adding the chapters, it makes the video that much better.
You're very welcome! Glad to hear it's helpful!

You are so very amazing. My dad loved this song sooooo much before he passed away, piano is definitely one of my all time favorite instruments so hearing this song played so well on one is amazing thanks for making this ❤😊

@@Montechait of course ❤️
God bless you! 🤗❤
If you see the movie "Walk the Line", you can sort of begin to see why this song felt so at home for Cash to cover. His life was pretty rough in the earlier days from an emotional stand-point.
so good
Thank you!:)
I'm going to make it my clock ringtone.
Hi Montechait Piano! I love your channel and very beautiful music you play. But im curious, how are you able to upload very frequently. It takes me days for me to learn a song and record?
I guess it's just a matter of practice - I have been playing piano and arranging songs for many years, so I usually manage to do it within a day or two. Keep at it, and you'll get faster! :)
I personally am not a fan of the Johnny cash version and I prefer the Nine Inch Nails version but Thats just my opinion. this is a great video!
Was this a hard song to learn and how long did it take you?
It wasn't too hard for me, maybe took me an hour to get it right. But of course, this will be different for everybody depending on their skill level. I think if you have some experience playing piano, this should be playable!
I have a cuestion. Maybe is very obvius, but did you edited the color of the piano keys by hand or there is a program?
Depends on what you mean „by hand“ - it’s an effect I create in the video editing process, basically a combination of SeeMusic and chroma keying. I‘m planning on doing a behind-the-scenes video on my Patreon some time soon, there I‘ll probably share some details about it
@@Montechait yeah, i’m meaning if is there a programm that put the color automatically when you play the notes or was it you painting the keys every frame in after effects or something.
Pd: thanks for the answer by the way 🫡👌🏻
You‘re welcome! :)
If I had to do it frame by frame, I could probably only do about one video per year 😄

Johnny Cash didn’t write this. Trent Reznor did. Give proper credit
I do so in the video description! :) However, this arrangement is based on the Johnny Cash version of the song, so that's what it says in the title.
Not everyone knows that... Jeesh..
This version of the song is johnny cash tho.
