  • Domino’s Pizza entered India in 1995. Since then, there are over 1,300 Domino’s stores across 282 cities in India, and its footprint continues to grow. As for Domino’s American rivals, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s, in India, the brands struggled to match Domino’s foothold in the subcontinent. Domino’s found its success in India the same way it won the pizza war in the United States, delivery and technology

Stephanie Hale I’m an Indian myself, and for people a generation or two older than me, they were extremely hesitant to try anything other than local food. In a way this hesitation extends to the kids because the parents don’t let the younger people try food like that. India is a very sensitive market, people get offended by anything and everything, so to normalise an American brand selling pizza here and make it a household name is nothing short of a miracle.

Adding my 2 cents. Domino's is popular because of following reasons.
    1. Lot of marketing and advertisement in the initial days
    2. Use of local ingredients and Development of localised tastes suitable to local pallette
    3. Lot of veg options keeping vegetarian people of India and including those vegetables
    4. Lot of spicy, cheesy and interesting combos rather than dull & blunt & dry flavour of Pizza Hut
    5. Low price compared to Pizza Hut
    6. 30 Mins quick delivery promised
    7. Lot of small & medium stores accessible from any nearyby location by expansion
The delivery app that you mentioned is Swiggy and Zomato, that is recent phenomenon available for all restaurants including pizza hut. However at the beginning Domino's had a dedicated call center number for ordering pizza from home which made it accessible and easy for everyone.
So people started to consider it as a popular tasty fast food rather than proper restaurant dining or meal

US - Full of meat options, Europe - so many cheese varieties, China - sea food varieties, India - veggie options even festival specific when people are fasting.
Also as highlighted, Indians eat a varieties of bread and don't mind cheese. Good video, though could have researched more.

Domino's is definitely an aspirational brand for a lot of middle and lower middle class Indians. Their fast and efficient delivery network is probably the best in food delivery. Growing up, I remember the Paresh Rawal ads of Tana na na dhi, oo Pizza aaye free because he orders a pizza when it's raining and expects it to be delayed by 30+ minutes thereby getting it for free. Through these strategies they have definitely reached the Indian consumer's conscious. Pizza is synonymous with Domino's in India.
While I was studying in Uttarakhand, I used to go to Rishikesh quite often and guess what, there was a Domino's there too. Dehradun, a smallish city by Indian standards had 4 Domino's and people were willing to travel upto 45 minutes to eat pizza at Domino's because they knew the quality was assured. I think they have done fantastically in the Indian market, where a lot of fast food giants have struggled. Me and my friends often talk about how Jubiliant's [the parent company of Domino's] share price just keeps going up and up. A lot of companies don't realise this but India is an especially difficult market to crack and Domino's has done it.

Firstly dominos pizzas are much affordable than Pizza Hut.
Secondly, I am pretty sure that they will get more success if they tap into vegan pizza options. India has a huge potential for vegan businesses, considering 30% are vegetarian, and most non-vegetarians eat meat only 2-3 times a week. Many consumers are inclining towards plant-based options.

It is extremely hard to find local pizzerias that can even match the subpar quality of Domino's even if you pay premium to the local "freshly" made pizza. Almost all my local pizzerias are good awful and take cost cutting to new levels. The inconsistency in taste is abysmal to say the least at least with Domino's I know what I am about to be served.

Domino's is successful cos of fast delivery, localised flavours and heavy marketing. Pizza hut advertising is hardly present.
