- In this new edition of Sartorial Talks, Hugo continues his discussion with Justin Fitzpatrick, the founder of the worldwide famous blog "The Shoe Snob" and of the eponymous quality shoes brand J.Fitzpatrick Footwear.
In this second part of this discussion, Justin explains in a disarming honest way how he eventually reached his dream to build a shoe brand of his own despite the difficulties and the rough moments he had to go through as a young entrepreneur.
A very inspiring story from which we can all take away some nuggets of perseverance and wisdom.

I own 6 pairs of JF shoes. They are all really elegant and well made. After a certain point, they became my only choice for dress shoes. One point I would like to add is how Justin personally takes care of issues and addresses them right on without a ‘salesman’ mentality. Dealing with him was liberating. I am extremely happy with how far this brand has come!
Many thanks George for your feedback! All my best, Hugo
Helping behind closed doors reminds me of the early American knife industry. If you look into their history of places like Camillus, many of the knife companies were brought and sold by each other as well as companies supplied blades/handles/materials to keep the other companies afloat. I love stories of established brands helping up and coming brands; it is more a story of gentlemen wanting to see others succeed rather than a fear of competition. Perhaps it is the thought that, "In the end, the customer will decide, but I'd rather have a friend than an enemy."
Very thoughtful comment my friend. Bonne année ! Hugo
We meet again... Great analogy though. As a guy who collects a lot of old stuff from the Niagara steel and tool industries, in the realm of knives, axes, and tools from Foster Brothers, Camillus, Dexter Russell, True Temper etc. this comparison between competitors that actually gain from some cooperation makes sense.
Justin is a class act. I have several pairs of his shoes and one that I got MTO because I wanted a different color and different leather than was offered in the collection. He provides outstanding personal customer service and the quality of his product is top notch, especially considering the price point. I also love his design ethic and all of his shoes have a unique twist on tradition that make them both unique and eye catching. I always get compliments on every pair of JF shoes every time I wear them. I don't get to New York often anymore, but next time I'm there top on my list is to get to his shop and meet the man himself. I've talked to him on the phone, but look forward to actually shaking hands and making a purchase directly in the store.
Many thanks Andrew for your feedback and your kind words. Cheers, Hugo
Merci Hugo; thank you Justin...
The story about Justin's Gieves and Hawkes was enlightening. I didn't know the story and was engaged throughout. I like the sentiment of buying quality and buying because of a love of well-made dress shoes....love the spectator...could I pull off a spectator....yes I can.
Best
Tony
Thank you Tony ! Happy new year ! Hugo
What a great show. Great shoes and boots. Justin is a treasure, thank you sir for a return to class!
Here are the three main things I would change : First, a reworked toe box where the big toe can fit straight (adding comfort for all foot types). Next, a refined pear-shaped heelcup looking more snug at the Achilles tendon (for even more flowing aesthetic). And finally, lasted shoe trees (for maintaining aesthetic). Thank you, Justin and Hugo, for your dedication and passion throughout the years... you might have turned us into discerning shoe snobs!
Dear Maxime, you're a perfect candidate for full bespoke! Cheers, Hugo
I have the navy blue loafer and black loafer, both in suede. They are so elegant and people always compliment them when I wear a jacket and trousers. These shoes are like “limousines for the feet”! Also, since I live in NYC, I can drop by the shop. Justin is extremely knowledgeable and shares interesting details about shoes and the business of shoemaking. I can’t wait to go back for my next pair! 🎩🎩🎩
Many thanks Reginald for sharing your experience with Justin's shoes. All my best, Hugo
I have met Justin on numerous occasions and I have to say he is a very nice fellow. He’s very passionate about what he does and it shows throughout his work. Great video as always Hugo I always look forward to your content!
Thank you for these great interviews with Justin! Thanks to your recommendation, I bought my first pair from him last summer, and then went to his shop to meet him in person in September, when he was preparing to come and visit you. I now own 4 pairs of his shoes, and one from Septième Largeur, another of your recommendations. I've got a pair of CNES in my cart that I am looking to purchase as well, all thanks to your amazing recommendations of fantastic up and coming brands!
I love the spectator shoes
Me too! Hugo
I need the shoe snob. No one else says it like it is the way Jeremy does. Very few reliable sources in men’s shoes
I can relate to this ! All my best, Hugo
I have been following Justin since the beginning of the brand. At that time is sounded strange that the man that owned a brand was promoting other brands. Now I understand that Justin was / is promoting the GYW shoe market and that market is his ecosystem and if the ecosystem is healthy he is selling shoes. A wise and generous guy.
Bravo! This video and the last one are what makes your platform great, Hugo!
What class acts and ehat an important message!
Spectacular! Longue vie à Justin! Looking forward to having one of his pairs!
Merci Julian ! Hugo
Such a great story, great collection, and an awesome attitude! Competition will get you so far, but much more can be achieved with collaboration! Bravo
There are some fantastic shoes on the table. Justin is one of the most creative makers in the market.
I did notice the cost of shipping was not going to allow me to purchase a pair. But now you have the European distribution I might be able to get myself a pair. Not sure which one will be better to get to the Falklands but I will work it out.
I always feel so much more relaxed after an episode of Sartorial Talks.
🤣😂I remember DHL struggling to reach your island with my books! Happy new year Alex! Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS well at least when you release the next one it might be easier 😂. Happy new year to you both.
Fascinating videos, watched both episodes. I really loved the Phillips spectator shoes in the camel/white, definitely has the 1930's vibe to it. I can definitely see Fred Astaire or Gary Cooper wearing it with panache.
Exactly! All my best, Hugo
Love Justin’s shoes and a very cool shop in SoHo. Couldn’t get a good fit 😢.
Such an interesting interview and what a gentleman Justin is. On top of it so much informative. Congrats Hugo 😍🔥👔
Merci Richard ! Bien amicalement, Hugo
What an informative episode this was!! Thanks Hugo!
That story made cry. 😢much success 😊
Such a great guy and fantastic shoes. Great double episode, thanks for making this programme. Love the "Phillips" spectator, in brown for me. And as a former Mod I love the zip boots. Both those pairs are on my shopping list.
Thanks Tom for your kind words. Happy new year, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS yes, happy new year to you all also, Hugo.
Got to know your CZcams channel since last week. Have already seen and learned a lot from your passion for clothing.
Thank you Hugo. Greetings from Amsterdam. Going to Paris soon again.
Many thanks my friend. We know Dam quite well (we even lived there, on Prinseneiland, in the early 2010s). Cheers, Hugo
Been following these 2 knowledgeable cats for long time..absolute privilege. Unfortunately I have became a proper shoes snob.😂😂
You caught the shoe virus! Well it's a good one. Yours, Hugo
@SARTORIALTALKS Appreciated Sir..
Thank You Gentlemen -
🚀🚀🚀
Where does one get them repaired and rebuilt outside US?
That’s a beautiful tie Hugo! Where is it from?
It's from Tie your Tie in Florence my friend. A great tie maker. Cheers, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKSthank you. I assume it’s no longer made no? Is your satin silk and in 7 fold construction?
I only have 1 tie from them that I purchased recently, a beautiful camel cashmere tie!
@@teakcore5261 I believe it's still made. This one is a 7fold satin silk indeed. Cheers, Hugo
where can we find videos of yours discussing handwelted shoes for a more budget friendly price?
Dear Daniel, we talk about hand welted shoes constantly on this channel. Look at the two parts of our shoe selection. Cheers, Hugo
👋
