BREAKING 3 HOURS in the Paris Marathon 2023 WITHOUT GELS

- I've made no secret of the fact that I can't stomach gels. Furthermore, having run fasted on most of my training runs for many years now, I am quite well fat adapted. This means I can utilise the fat stores in my body as fuel faster than some. This in turn means I can run long distances without needed to consume too many sugary drinks, gels or bars.
Some people are under the impression that this is all fine for slow runners but when you want to go fast you most definitely will need to fuel with gels. However, I have now run two sub three hour marathons whilst taking little to no fuel during the run. I've also run my fastest and second fastest half marathons with no fuel at all.
So here is my 2023 Paris Marathon PB run, fuelled on one half of a banana and some Purdeys. You CAN run fast on very little.....as long as you agree that a sub 3 marathon is fast. If you're running under 2:30 then I have nothing to offer you!!

Wow, thank you for the video! My friends and I are an oversea marathon fanatical runners. Paris will be our next race👏
That’s really amazing! I ran the Paris marathon this year as well although I was about an hour and half behind you! You’re right that the ramps coming out of the tunnels and the wind were tough at the times but what a beautiful course - really showed Paris at its best! Well done with your time - it really shows that the effort pays off! Thanks Rob
Well done again Stephen and to everyone else who ran . You all trained so well. A massive congratulations to all
Thanks Amy. Gosh I am behind in replying to comments!!
I weirdly love doing the maths mid marathon. Helps pass the time… I think 🙃
Loved watching this! I had such a great time running Paris it was so beautiful and vibrant. Thanks to you and Victoria for capturing this.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant work. Really inspirational. Thanks.
Great to watch, well done you three🎉
Thanks, that was really inspiring!
Outstanding work Stephen 🎉 congratulations on achieving that sub-3!! And well done Victoria and Sarah too for a smashing race. Loved this video - great summary and nice to see the race from two different perspectives. Really inspiring stuff ❤
I’ll be running Paris in April hopefully under 3 hours. Your info is much appreciated and congrats to you and the ladies. You looked pretty fresh afterwards, I reckon you can go faster in the future. Cheers
Thanks Frankie. Hoping to go a little faster in London in April
Well done, Stephen. Outstanding run!
Shooting a video at that speed 😲︎ I was amazed at this thing. It must have been hard work, Thank you very much, Stephen! And of course Congratulations to all of you, 42 k is a really really long fight. Great !!💪💪💪
Congratulations again on the amazing time! Loved the video so thanks both - I too struggled through Bois de Vincennes I think because it has nearly 30m start to end elevation. Good luck with Boston and London. 3 in 3 weeks 😂
Great running Stephen. I absolutely love your determination. Well done Victoria ….. eating cake in a marathon 👊🏻🙌🏻👏🏻
Well done to you both! Great PB Steve! I have enjoyed following you through the last few months and your PARIS training. I'm glad the hard work paid off.
Such a well deserved result Stephen and congratulations also to Victoria and Sarah 🎉
Congratulations!
Absolutely amazing run by you all 😎.
Fantastic! Enjoyed that 😀👏
Thanks Tina!!
Kudos to Victoria, some great coverage there too!
Congratulations to you both, great run and a great video
Thank you so much Tim!
Great content! Subscribed
Thank you Alperen, much appreciated.
Congratulations
Great running. London 2024 here we come
Epic !!! You must be absolutely over the moon Stephen. So sub 18 parkrun surely on the cards now ? Or have you ticked that one off as well ? In awe of your videography skills as always
Stephen ‼️ amazing achievement. Wonderful to see you and Victoria running "together" despite 90 mins difference in stating times. Bravoooooooooooooo oooooooo (loosing my breath) ooooooooo 🫶🫶🫶
Thanks you as always Konrad! Victoria off to Boston now
@@FilmMyRun omg omg omg omg sending best wishes and good luck to her for completing marvelous Boston Marathon. I have only 10 days till Cracovia Marathon and I just cannot wait. Never stop doing your videos ‼️ you and Ben are two main reasons why I keep running.
Well done again, that was a superb run!! Is Victoria doing Boston on Monday?? Hopefully I will see you out there. We fly tomorrow 😊😊 Wish her lots of luck from me 😊😊
Yes, Victoria is also flying out tomorrow from Gatwick around 11:30. Give her a shout if you see her at all over the weekend.
@@FilmMyRun we definitely will!! You’re not coming?? ☹️☹️ She’s going to have the time of her life. It is a fantastic marathon and a brilliant weekend. The Bostonians love the marathon and make you feel like a superstar 😊😊
I've ran 11 marathons and never taken a gel at any of them. Did 3:09 at Valencia 2022. Fasted runs are definitely what's required to get you used to not relying on much additional fuel, the longer the fasted run the better but even just an hour or so a few times a week help a lot.
That's remarkable 👏
Great run! But imagine how much faster you could have gone with more calories! Have you tried sports drinks or dates?
Respect
Thanks Bruce
Thank you for a great video. I'm running it in 2024, and next weekend I'm doing the Marathon des Vins de Blaye which is a festive (boozy) run. Madness!
Thanks Dan! Enjoy the Vins de Blaye, that will be awesome!!
And yup sooo true re the Maths 😂😂😊✅
You did excellent pacing 1:28 1st half, Curious if you Carb loaded the 36hrs pre Race? Also did you consume a fairly large breakfast about 3hrs out? Using your fatty acids and stored glycogen means those fasted runs helped your burn a better rate of fat. Would love to hear what you did from 36hrs out. You only had half a banana /60cals perhaps round 30-35k? Cheers
Hi Zac. No carb loading. Just eat my normal diet although I might have a 'larger' meal the night before. Breakfast is two slices of toast and porridge or a tin of rice pudding. Yes, half a banana and half a can of fizzy drink (Purdeys Fruit drink) at 30km. For me it's more that if I consume anything it feels like it sits on my stomach and hinders my running rather than helps it. So minimal intake means my stomach stays settled. Fat burn means I have a constant energy supply whilst running at below or just on threshold pace with minimal need for fast acting glycogen.
Wow no gels. What did you eat beforehand?
Normal breakfast. Toast and coffee
Do sub 2.45 with no gels and no water.
I couldn’t run 2:45 WITH gels and water let alone without! But there are plenty who could I’m sure. It’s just having the confidence to leave the crutch behind and use the energy you already have stored. Tell you what, I’ll do under 2:50 with no gels for you next year.
Check out "Patrick Martin", ran 2:24 without gels and water, has been running only 3 years or thereabouts. Can be done.
Great run Stephen but be careful. With your fluid intake, you are just begging for a kidney stone 😄
Thanks Patrick. I think the idea I’m trying to promote is to drink when you’re thirsty. I definitely drink when I need to.
@@FilmMyRun I've always been told when exercising that drinking when you are thirsty means you are already too late. However, it seems to be working for you so pay me no mind. Great vid!
@@patrick7228 yes that is a very common misconception. Drink to thirst. Or, do what works for you.
