This group/song has a special place in my life. Back in '88, I was on the MTV game show "Remote Control"; the bonus round consisted of identifying the artists in 9 music videos. This was the last video - after shouting out "SWING OUT SISTER!" I won the big prize: a trip for two to Puerto Vallarta. Thanks, Swing Out Sister!
That must be an awesome memory! Very cool. I'm a fan as well.
Awesome story!
@NateG-nx7rm I'll admit - watching at home, I always wondered what it would be like to be in the chair that flipped up into the air when it was pulled back. I wanted to know how they got the kid down! I never did find out.
This is one of those songs you’ll continue to sing after it ends, lol. Another sweet, catchy, dance tune to check out from the 80s is Pretty Poison, “Catch Me I’m Falling”. 🤠
I second the Pretty Poison nomination. I was going to suggest the same until I saw your comment.
They already did that one.
@@dalee72 You're right!
why do buffoons request these dumb boring songs?
Next Friday you should do Linda Ronstadt long long time
After their first few albums the trio became a duo and a couple. SOS went in a much more jazzy sound and fell off the pop radar. They still continue to release music and do some light touring here and there. Corrine's voice and joyfulness is so catchy. I just love them! :) Check out another great song by them "Am I The Same Girl?"
Swing Out Sister is one of my favourite bands from the 80's. Not bad song in their arsenal. I've been buying them since 1987 and still do till this day!
Their jazzy albums are incredible... definitely they need to hear Am I the Same Girl!
" Am I the same girl" is a cover of a great jamaican singer
This duo has another song called "TWILIGHT WORLD" that was a hit and one that you folks will really like!
why do buffoons request these dumb boring songs?
Swing out Sister is an amazing jazzy, pop, soul band. One of my favorite groups of the 80's / 90's.
Same here. I still buy their music. Basia is a close second. I discovered both simultaneously!
A lot of great British bands during the 80s/90s, happier times for music
This was one of the weirder genre mash-ups of the mid 80s; artists like Swing Out Sister, Sade and Everything But The Girl essentially fusing new wave modernism with the slick, jazzy cocktail pop of the 50s/ 60s.
It was awesome.
So good! Everything But the Girl is one of my favorite groups 🥰
I absolutely LOVE Swing Out Sister! Corinne Drewery has an amazing voice!
😊
Their song "Am I the same girl?" Is one of my all time favorite songs..Also back in the day when I first heard that song I thought she was a sista. 😂 Her voice was mesmerizing too me.
Am I Same Girl is the vocal version of Young-Holt Unlimited's Soulful Strut.
@@pattyduke3079And a cover of the song of the sane name.
Love it!❤
@pattyduke3079 I never knew that, I'll try and find it. Thanks for the heads up.
Sista? Me too. Whole lotta soul!!
I love SOS. A very underrated group. This entire album is worth a listen.
So is the follow-up. I have their entire catalog of albums. The synth sounds were phenomenal at the time especially the horns and strings. So much so they still hold up more than 30 years later. They are still making music.
@@seanswinton6242 -- Awesome! I didn't know they did anything "It's Better To Travel" 🤔 I'll look for them. Thanks!
@@swervature Eavesdropping on the conversation, here... You're in for a treat if you do go looking for more SOS. They've got loads more music after _It's Better to Travel_ that's very enjoyable, which I hope you're already discovering.
@@00TheRealTC -- On it!
If you want a new favorite song, Pink Floyd - Dogs is the one 🐕🦺❤
They are a great British Band. Had a few great hits here, but continued to record in the UK for a number of years. Very jazzy yet danceable at the same time.
Biggest in Japan, a few of their albums only got released in Japan...like "Filth & Dreams" from 1999...they are coming out with a new album soon, apparently bigband sound...
@@lawrencedavis4406 I have their import albums. They are some of the best
Nobody rocks the Bob haircut like Corinne Drewery, she was and still is absolutely beautiful and my crush in the 80's, the band was a trio not duo, originally formed by Andy Connell and Martin Jackson, Corinne joined later, so man great songs, Am I The Same Girl, Twilight World, You On My Mind, but my personal favourite is Somewhere In The World, a very soulful laid back tune with a great video, thanks for this one guys 🇬🇧
Brother, I gotta give Cathy Dennis an honorable mention there. 👍🏻
Swing Out Sister is soooo underrated. Their album Get In Touch With Yourself is fire! Literally every song on the album is a banger. And...their song Twilight World if fire as well. Must listen!
Swing Out Sister has a lot of great songs with strong melodies and killer horn arrangements. "You On My Mind", "Waiting Game", "Surrender", "Twilight World" are the ones that immediately come to mind. Glad you liked "Breakout"-it's a real mood lifter.
Somewhere in the world is another great hit.
Love Twilight World
I have great memories of walking to work w/this song playing on Walkman in 1987, btw I’ve a hairstylist for 40yrs & so many young women (if they weren’t into the 80’s big hair) brought in pictures of the lead singer to cut their hair into straight bobs w/bangs that year too! Note her retro makeup, that was also an alternative trend going on-for the girls who weren’t into wearing the 8 shades of eyeshadow, the lead singer & the singer Sade were wearing cateye liner & red lipstick, & many of us tried to copy it, way wayyyy before CZcams & tiktok tutorials!
This song was Swing Out Sister's first Top 40 hit in America. The song peaked at the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the fall of 1987. By the way, the lead singer, Corrine Drewery, does has a terrific voice indeed!!!
Swing out Sister - huge HUGE in Japan ! A great jazz group !
SOS loves Japan, too. They often get special-release albums with extra tracks available _only_ in Japan.
I was an exchange student in Germany and my friends purchased this album for me before I return to America… The album is crazy good! Every song is a banger! My brothers heard it, and all of them fell in love. I’m so glad you’ve been introduced to swing out sister.
Hi, Christopher. While you were in Germany when this awesome song came out, I was studying abroad in Seville, Spain. The song was immensely popular in Spain. It was played in our favorite dance club all the time. I love it too. It instantly makes me yearn for Spain once again!
I love every song on this album. ❤
@@shirleyjones9460
Same here 🥰
If you want a new favorite song, Pink Floyd - Dogs is the one 🐕🦺❤
Ooh, I didn't have that album and now I'm wanting it! Lol
Swing Out Sister and Lisa Stanfield were putting out records around the same time. It was such a great era for music/dance fans. They still sound fantastic today. ✌️❤️🎶🎶🎶
If you liked the jazz element to this, you’ll love the band Level 42. They combine pop, rock, jazz and funk with the slap bass playing of Mark King.
Level 42 There’s Something About You👌🏽
Level 42. AMAZING GROUP. Seen many times.
They played together at Prince's Trust. Sublime.
I loved this when it came out and I still do. That sharp drum, the horns, the punchy bass and her voice. A perfect pop song.
You can't be anything but happy listening to this, and I'm singing along again. Cheers guys, Paul.😀🎶📀❤️
Amber, another song you could use for Female Fridays that would put you in the same mood as "Break Out" is "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves. Three other songs I'd also like to recommend for Female Fridays that I don't think you've ever heard are "Get Here" by Oleta Adams, "Moonlight In Vermont", by Sarah Vaughn, and "Street Life" by Randy Crawford wih the Crusaders.
The 3 suggested songs - hell yeah !
Walking on Sunshine would be great!!! Is that the same Randy Crawford who did some R&B? Q with Tracy Ackerman (UK) did a great dance cover of Get Here in about 1993.
I was home all day alone. I worked nights at a restaurant waiting tables in college & my roommates worked days. I used to blast this song & sing/dance around the house making a fool out of myself. LOVE ! Thanks Amber & Jay !!!
Swing Out Sister went on to make some of the best music ever. Every single album after this one only got better with each one. Check them all out. I’ve had the incredible luck to meet and meet and hang with Corinne and Andy and they are both amazing beautiful people. Love them so much.
Another great song from that time is “It’s got to be perfect “ by fairground attraction.” You will love it! Perfect for female Friday! ❤
I had a mad crush on the singer. She came off so fun and positive in the video. Great little upbeat song.👍
Picture it: Columbus, Ga. 1986 - Me in a music store dressed like Madonna, my friend dressed like Boy George dancing to "Break Out"!
Swing Out Sister was only a trio on the 1st album, where this song came from. I think the group was more popular in Japan than elsewhere. They even have an album that was only released in Japan called "Filth And Dreams", and a couple of live albums recorded there too. I tend to hear Swing Out Sister songs played on the local jazz station sometimes, but I own all of their albums except the live ones and the Japan only album. I think it's out of print now.
Swing Out Sister did a cover of the 1968s Soul song "Am I the Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin. There's also a cool instrumental version by the group Young Holt Unlimited titled "Soulful Strut." All three versions are cool.
So glad you reacted to this one - I LOVE Swing Out Sister. Their debut album “It’s Better to Travel” is sensational - a great soul/Jazz vibe throughout, and every track on there is a gem. I recommend “Twilight World” and “Surrender” as well. Their music never fails to make my ears happy.
EXCELLENT CHOICE! I love this group! Ya GOTTA check out their other bangers: "Twilight World"..."Am I The Same Girl"...and "Forever Blue!"
Such a well structured song - the key change still gives me little chills. I love how you, Amber, always remain mostly focussed on the music while Jay you often seem to be concentrating more on the video than the song.
Agree!👍🥂
Next from Swing Out Sister you guys should do Am I The Same Girl? You are going to love it.
I LOVE this song! It’s a pretty special song for me because of where it takes me back to….SPAIN. During the academic year of 1987-88, I spent a year in Seville, Spain studying language and Spanish history. This song played a ton at our favorite dance club/bar appropriately named “Club Rio” because it sat right next to the Rio Guadalquivir, the major river that runs through Sevilla. In fact, Christopher Columbus brought gold to Spain from the New World on this very river. Such history!!
Christopher Columbus or real name Cristobal Colon is a Thief, Murderer and a Devil.🤡
Cool story 😎. I love how music connects us to a time , place and each other. Peace and Love 🥰
@@juliewhite7469 Thanks. That’s absolutely true! 😃
Damn,I was watching this video and forgot I had something on the cooker. The kitchen's full of smoke now and the smoke alarm's going off non-stop. I hope the neighbours don't call the fire brigade! Such a happy, positive song.
SOS is in my top 5 bands of all time. This early music is a bit poppier but still has the pop standards & jazz quality they dive deep into in later albums and they continue to make music only getting better. They are in the vein of Burt Bachrach. Check out Better Make it Better, their cover of La La (Means I Love You) and Where Our Love Grows.
I love SOS. They can set an entire mood and definitely can bring the horns. Am I the same girl should be your next song. Guaranteed to love it.
Thanks for reacting to this gem!! It brought back memories...very good ones!! I have a suggestion that is guaranteed to blow you away. I don't believe you guys have ever heard of him or heard his music. He is Jamiroquai, a very soulful brit (Englishman). The song I'd like to suggest is called "Virtual Insanity." Hold on to your seats, you won't know what hit ya!!! LovePeace&Light. -- Mykaèl.
back in the 80's me and all my friends were metalheads. Iron maiden, Metallica, slayer, Anthrax etc.
Swingout sister were one of my guilty pleasures :)
Swing Out Sister is my favorite group of the eighties, it is a very particular group since it did not obtain a massive success, but it overflows quality, evokes positivity and leaves a very optimistic and emotional vibe in each of its songs, far from the dark tone that the British groups of that time took as the cure. S.O.S combines pop with jazz influences, some big band arrangements and various funk elements with a lot of refinement and splendor. Their first album is simply a masterpiece! I love the channel, I recommend you react to the song "Suave" by Luis Miguel
why do buffoons request these dumb boring songs?
I had this cd, reminds me of another group I don't think you have reacted to but similar: The Style Council...such an 80s vibe.
Yeah, they hit the jam but would love for them to get to the style council
This is one of my favorite groups....love their music. "It's Better To Travel " by Swing Out Sister was one of their first albums. I loved every song on that album. Takes you to another place just listing to it.🏅🤩
I love the video plot, how she goes from working with the fabric in a factory setting and goes on to be a model on the runway and fulfil her dreams. Definitely an inspirational and uplifting track
Bought the first LP just because of this song and I am still an absolute fan of this band to this day. 🥰
Since day one they have had a unique mix of pop and funk and blues and jazz that always surprises.
It is extremely well known in Japan and is an “eternal secret tip” in Europe (and even more so in the USA)!
This song and video takes me back to 1987. I was fifteen. The world was a much smaller place back then, but we loved it. At the time I don’t think I appreciated this song as much as I should have. As I’ve gotten older, my love for it has grown exponentially.
It is tempting to want to go back into the past and why not? But then I wouldn’t want to live in a world where Amber and Jay didn’t exist.
You weren’t there, Amber and Jay, but you totally get the vibe. And, let me tell you, we sincerely love you for it. Thank you so much for being you and giving the people what they want.
❤🙏
Such a great uplifting track. One of those tunes that I could have playing on repeat and never get sick of it. Another mint 80s vibe!
Oh my gosh she reminds me so much of Basia, sound and looks, including the band. Basia did jazzy pop too. She was awesome. Definitely check her out. Also her other band Matt Bianco. She has a sad backstory that took her out of music during her prime just as she was hitting it big. But a triumphant return many years later.
This is one of those songs that instantly transports me back to a certain place and time. Oh to be that 14 yr old kid again, life comes at you fast folks.
liberating is a great way to describe the song my older sister played this song for me back in the day to get me to come out of my shell , but yeah definately an up lifting song .
Always loved this song 😊
So glad that you posted this Swing Out Sister song, "Breakout" which was their biggest hit in the U.S. Be sure though to check-out more of their songs because they have an awesome body of work and many in the U.S. are not aware of.
Great reaction, Jay and Amber.
This band started out as a trio, later a duo, other tracks to check out by them are; 'Surrender', 'Twilight World', 'Am I The Same Girl', 'La La', there are many more tracks by them but these are good ones to start with.
why do buffoons request these dumb boring songs?
Started as a trio, then over the years, a duo. They are a very smooth jazz/pop band. Many albums. I own and love all of them. Massive in Japan although they are British.
I just re-discovered this one-hit wonder (in the US) a couple of months ago.
A solid 80's classic, reaching #4 in '86
Sooooo forgot about this. A a British friend of mine went to school with her and she would let him pose as their manager so he go where the VIPs go and just hang out.
Check out their other hit called, Am I the Same Girl, which is a cover of a 60s song by Barbara Acklin. But it more famously known as an instrumental, Soulful Strut as her voice was removed.
So glad you reacted to this great 80's song! I'd like to suggest a classic song from 1974, "Lady Marmalade" by Labelle, led by Patti Labelle. This was a huge hit song heard everywhere, and covered for the Moulin Rouge movie.
why do buffoons request these dumb boring songs? oh god not that stupid marmalade song! really? that's the best you can think of?
Great, GREAT track and an excellent suggestion!
Yes yes yes. They must do Lady!!!!!!
Wow! We finally got to some sophisti-pop music (Sophisticated Pop...a genre I've been trying to get you to listen to for over two years) by one of my favorite British groups! 😃
I've suggested them many, many times over the past two years, including for Female Friday as the lead and only female singer in the former trio is Corrine Drewery, as you mentioned.
More by them....
"Twilight World"
"Blue Mood"
"Something Everyday"
"Am I the Same Girl?"
"The Waiting Game"
"Butterfly"
"Now You're Not Here"
"Circulate"
"Who's Been Sleeping?"
"Notgonnachange"
"Get In Touch With Yourself"
WOW!! I was literally excited when I saw you were doing this one! Big hit here in the states during the Fall of '87. It was (deservedly) Grammy nominated. Outstanding choice...Thanks!!🥰
Corrine Dewery the singer was part of the
incredible group of amazing singers from Great Britain in the late 80's. Lisa Stansfield and Cathy Dennis were also at the top of their game.
Those aren’t horns. That’s a Yamaha DX7 - the sound of the late 80s.
I played that song *so many times* in high school marching band, I think I can still at least finger the notes on my trumpet by memory. (I was first chair, and the one trumpet solo gets way too high to still do 30+ years later.)
I interned at a radio station in college when this song and album came out. Swing Out Sister was in town promoting this song and I got to meet them. They were very cool and Corrine was very tall! This song is still on my weekly playlist rotation.
Whoa, when you said she's very tall, you weren't kidding. I looked up her stats and I read she's 6'3" !! Wouldn't have ever guessed.
@@00TheRealTC At 5’3”, you can imagine how short I felt!
@@kellyreitermanI certainly can, as a 5' 2" shortie, LOL. (Really 5" 1 and 3/4" but I round up!)
Hey, hey, hey I'm swinging out sister.. love it. Sliding across my floor. Love it. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
Started out as a trio, reduced to a duo I believe after this album. Just like the Thompson Twins started out as a trio and reduced to a duo. How about some Thompson Twins songs like "Doctor, Doctor", "Lay Your Hands On Me", or "Lies". Thanks. 😎
Katrina and the Waves' "Walking On Sunshine" could be a nice one to follow up with for Female Friday. Feel good vibes FTW
You also need to check their version of “Am I the Same Girl”, originally done in 1968 by Barbara Acklin
thank you for listening to Swing Out Sister. I think they are fantastic. I would suggest listening to “Twilight World”, “Fooled by a smile”, “Waiting Game” and “Am I the Same Girl?”
My bus driver had a radio on the bus and this song came on alot when it came out when i was in 10th grade 😊
This one reminds me of all the great music videos of the early 80's!! When it was fun watching VH-1!
Love this singer, Corinne Drewery--her voice and the look in her eyes!
Love this song! Happy song! Funny note, last March I was in London, and at the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the marching band was playing this song, it was so surprising to hear this 80's hit instrumental🎺
They have another song and it's very r&b heavy called Butterfly, love that 😊 By this song you wouldn't think both are by the same artist, lol!
Wow! So much nostalgia! I live in the UK and so I wake up to your posts and laying in bed, singing along to Break Out at the top of my voice has been a bloody fabulous start to my day. Thank you🥰❤️
Classic 80’s Radio Hit!!!! 🌟✌️
I think you’ll gonna love “Am I The Same Girl?”, too.
I loved this song as a child, on Friday evenings when I heard it, it made me feel so good
Another comment that I should have made with my original. The song Am I the Same Girl is actually from 1968 first performed by a group called Young Holt Limited. It was all instrumental and called the Soulful Strut. It reached #3 in the US on the charts and became a 'gold' record. The following year, Barbara Acklin released the song with lyrics with the title Am I the Same Girl. I don't remember exactly but it was in the top 50 somewhere; it just didn't gain the traction that the previous instrumental did, until Swing Out Sister released it in 1989.
This band is great and it was more that the two singers. Band had serious chops.
Swingout Sister are one of many British sophisti-pop bands including ABC (When Smokey Sings), Prefab Sprout (When Love Breaks Down), Sade (Smooth Operator), The Blow Monkeys (Digging Your Scene), and Simply Red (Money's Too Tight to Mention), amongst others.
Another band you have yet to react to from the late eighties early nineties is Scottish band Wet Wet Wet. Try "Wishing i was Lucky" "Goodnight Girl" or "Love is all Around". You won't be disappointed. Much love from England 🏴
Swing Out Sister have released some of the most beautiful sophisticated pop albums of the last forty years. Their most recent one 'Almost Persuaded' was released in 2018 and I saw them play live in London the same year.
Agreed! _Almost Persuaded_ is another goodie. Wish I could see them live some day. I'm sure it would be an excellent show.
Gimme some more Edgar Winter guys! This time with his brother Johnny doing “Tobacco Road” live from 1973
Both brothers were Albino and legally blind but musical geniuses! Jim I Hendrix was once asked “How does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world? His response was “I don’t know, why don’t you ask Johnny Winter”! Blues guitar, great vocals, jazz…..they do it all on this song and more? I’ve been with you guys from the beginning and I know you haven’t heard anything like this so far. It’s AMAZING
Wag na
A song that makes you sing and dance! I loooove this song! I always thought she's so chic!!
I forgot to say - I always associate this song with Murder on the Dance Floor by Sophie Ellis- Bextor. Do the video, it's a lot of fun.
One if the best lyrical songs of the 80s
Fun tune!
This song never fails to put me in a good mood. Another song that does the same & has a similar upbeat, positive vibe, but moves a little faster, that I think y'all would like is "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & the Waves (& it has some horns too).
Swing out sisters is a trio. Later in their career they became a duet, but here is a trio.
This song always makes me smile, I remember when it was in the charts
One of my favorite groups of all time. I just knew you would love it. There are a few more you could try. Fooled by a Smile, is a fun song. Twilight World, LA LA LA Means I love You are also great. I also think "Am I the Same Girl" is another masterpiece, even though it is a remake. But the song I would suggest the most would be "Forever Blue". What a hauntingly beautiful song, and love and loss.
I remember this video starting in black and white, then switching to colour. This is a total time travel trip back to the late 80s for me.
They are amazing live in concert! Saw them twice! They're a little funky too!
I remember being 16 when this was new and not liking it because 16 year old me only liked metal. But the memory of this song has stuck with me and I like it now.
I still have the "It's Better to Travel" CD. Love it. Still get goosebumps. As Jay said "horns" :) This song is just a sweet spot of the 80s and 90s.
I've always liked this song since it came out. Another song she does thats more jazz in live concerts is "Forever Blue". Good song.
I ❤ this All the 80s vibes
Swing Out Sister were two-hit wonders. Their second hit was six years later, in '92.
Wow, I haven't heard this song in decades! I always loved it and it makes me feel exactly how Amber described! Thanks for bringing back some great nostalgia for me! Great reaction and song choice! ✌💙✌
I absolutely love Swing Out Sister. I was just listening to them this week on some hikes. This song is their biggest hit but also one of their more atypical tracks. They are very much a more jazzy/pop/soul influenced group. Your next foray could be the ballad Forever Blue or their another upbeat tune like Am I The Same Girl.
You like this, you’ll love Matt Bianco and even more, you will LOVE Basia as a solo artist.
Finally - So glad you picked up on this - You should check out a few more like "Am I the same girl" and "Somewhere in the World". They have many hidden gems
You should check out The Style Council's 'How She Threw It All Away.' It's got the horns you love with a snazzy flute solo.
Since you’ve been starting listening to Level 42, search YT for a live performance of this track with Level 42 as the backing band. Mark King’s bass playing gives a whole new dimension to the song
