"Married With Children" was a satire of the clean, wholesome sitcoms of the 50s and 60s such as Ozzie and Harriet, Leave It to Beaver, My Three Sons, The Patty Duke Show, etc., and so on...
It's hard to say between Mama and Al Bundy but the the thing about Mama was that was my grandma. When I watched that show I swore they put hidden video cameras in my grandparents' house and spied on them to get the idea for that character LOL

The reason the show was successful it was more relatable and ahead of its time there was nothing like it in tv
I wish I could've been there to explain the context of these scenes. I've seen every episode dozens of times and these clips still crack me up. I think knowing what was happening helps some.

Yeah Married With Children was savage comedy. But Sanford and Son, All in the Family and The Jeffersons were all from the 70s and all were savage and some of the funniest sitcoms ever made.
Golden Girls had some savages too.
You are correct.. at the time all the family shows showed the happy family with their day-to-day problems. That's why they wanted to go the opposite with Married with Children and show a dysfunctional family and be over the top with everything they did.
Oh yeah definitely. Al Bundy was hilarious ASF! He was supposed to be a spoof of the typical masculine, American man. Someone to wouldn't want to be but now without PC everything is, he's practically a freaking hero.

You're right about the TV shows of that time. Most of the network shows were about loving, caring, moral families so a big part of the inspiration for 'Married With Children' was to be the opposite of 'The Cosby Show' and it helped get the new Fox network some big ratings and led to other hit shows.
True, the original title of the show was to be "Not the Cosbys"
His hair was white cause him and peggy been having ALOT of relations. Al's uncle had died and whatever relative who had a kid first and named it after him got a big inheritance.
This is definitely a show worth buying the box set. It was great when it was on, and it took to the last few seasons to really taper off.
And Al rarely won, but when he did, he really deserved it. Perhaps the best victory was his "So you think I'm a loser" speech. It makes every day a victory for him, and it's still relevant to this day! He was a bit unfortunate, but he was, and still is, a role model for all men.

I forgot about Mama's Family but I watched both shows a ton back then.
Al Bundy didn't have any filters and that made the show a hit when it was on the air.

Big Al was the most loving and kind American there ever was. Absolutely nobody was immune to his loving personality, not even his drinking buddies. The loved everybody equally, and never played favorites.
Mama's family has that spicy main character but Married with Children has so many characters. Each one is hilarious I. Their own way. Its not just Al Bundy, it's the whole family thats fucked up. I mean, they do WILD SHIT.

The show opened in the 80s. There were shows like this though. Go back a few years and you'll find All In The Family. Ed based the character of Al Bundy on his uncle who was a district court judge.

I love that they designed this show to be the opposite of the Cosby's. A family that you'd hate. However people saw so many things that they had in common with them that the show became a huge success. One of those concepts that failed successfully.

He hated his wife, but deep down, really loved her. He's juts bored of her.
And thats why I really liked it. (Looks ate in the eye of the beholder) the fact is both him and Peg are in great shape for their age in the show and I of course find Peg super sexy I would believe that women to a degree would find Al sexy ( physically)..... but as you know.... their married with children

11:34 Things weren't really darker back then, especially not on TV. The show was satirical and the first of its kind to do anything like this, but it was funny and people enjoyed something different than the usual fake portrayal of family life, like Andy Griffin, The Brady Bunch, The Cosby Show, etc. People in normal suburban life, rarely acted in a manner he portrayed, you'd get arrested if you pulled out a bat to threatened someone. And before cell, text, and mobile Internet were mainstream, word of mouth reputation among those in a neighborhood was much more important, if you treated neighborhood children or your own kids the way he did, you'd be a total outcast, people wouldn't want to be associated with you.
