- I thought it would be a fun challenge to try and cut the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate directly in half, leaving us with just 40 characters. If we were to do something like that, who should stay and who should be removed? That's what I try to answer in this video.

Justice Del Giudice In MY opinion I don’t see how you main a character based on just running,turning around,and pressing b multiple times rinse repeat until your opponent is at a high percent then run up and Forward smash.I main Luigi and at least you need a couple of brain cells to play him with his zero to deaths but that’s just me.

Getting rid of falcon is foolish because more so than any fighter, he represents Smash as a franchise. Since the inception, he has fueled the high-octane action and magical excitement of the games. He’s not even an f-zero character at this point. He’s defined by his Smash likeness, but more importantly, Smash is defined by him. Memes aside, his old-fashioned bravado and uncompromising sense of honor and justice are definitive aspects of Smash history and provide important depth to the culture and community the franchise has garnered.

Roy was the only character original to Smash, so I’d keep him as he is like Falcon in the sense of extreme hype. He might be under the fire emblem tag, but he is synonymous with Smash at this point.

I still have all five of my mains. Sonic, Ness, Luigi, Pac-Man, and Pokémon Trainer all stay, so it's honestly a win for me. Too bad they kept Dedede. He's very annoying and me and my friends are much happier with smashdown. So they better keep that in Smash 6.

Considering that K Rool is one of the most requested characters of all time, along with the likes of Ridley and Waluigi, it would be unthinkable to remove him, especially considering how unique his moveset is.

This concept is actually way easier to execute when you don’t realize you’re cutting half. I made an ideal roster for the next game and when I was counting them there were 41 characters lol, I wasn’t even trying to cut half

To add, Ganondorf isn't even occuring as much. Ganon also has a bland and lame moveset. Sure he now has a thick blade and screams DORIYA, but... Bleh. Ganon would've been the cut of choice.

Back on topic, yes, Zelda is a big franchise and I agree with your statement. Ganon is iconic. But he is not as relevant as in the older days (basically until Brawl). Keeping in Toon Link, who represent a side branch, would make way more sense. Or replace Sheik with Impa. Should make more sense. 😉

I agree with you when it comes to game and watch but not Ness. Falcon only got cut because he and ganondorf come into the semi clone department. From a players point of view, falcon is a better pick to stay over ganon because hes part of the original 12 and had the similar moveset first. But from Nintendos point of view that's not the case. Ganondorf an iconic villain from the legend of zelda series. Hes been in every Zelda game as the antagonist and has been for over 20 years now. So ganon was a better pick over falcon in the eyes of Nintendo. What does this have to do with Ness? The reason Ness got in was because lucas and him are also in the semi clone department. Ness is a better pick over Lucas, so ness stayed in. Falcon just had to go because of ganondorf. I dont understand how game and watch snuck in over falcon, but that's why Ness is in and Falcons not.

Captain falcon’s falcon punch is what brought me to smash last year

That's the problem, yes, he's part of the og 12, but at this point, he is more of a captain Smash than captain falcon. Heck, nintendo didn't even knew what the heck to put in his moveset because he is 95% in the blue falcon, so they roll with a few samus moves (making him in 64 a semi clone of samus), a few moves from the F Zero manga i think and the previously scrapped moveset of the fighters of Dragon King, the prototype of Smash 64.
I mostly agree with this, but they will never remove any of the original 12. It is the only fan rule I buy into.

He really should have picked Cloud to eliminate. Nintendo couldn't get any Final Fantasy content in Smash outside of Cloud and Midgar. They couldn't even get Steve Burton to dub his voice or use archived recordings from Final Fantasy games.

Mostly fine with this but cutting Falcon and Puff would never happen.
Honestly I’m in favor of cutting Puff, she’s pretty much only has her “perfect record” going for her at this moment as her popularity has greatly diminished over time and her moveset is hardly anything to write home about. But Falcon is completely worth keeping, even if F-Zero is dead he is still a fan favorite character and pretty much embodies everything Smash is all about.

SapphireWolfXD Maybe with Sakurai around, but if a new director comes in then there’s a possibility that they would have different priorities. Also Jigglypuff was close to be getting cut from Brawl, so even under Sakurai’s direction she’s never been “always in the clear”. Is it unlikely that Puff would get cut, yeah probably but honestly I would be favor of cutting her either way. I think we can at least agree that if anyone from 64 is ever getting cut then it would easily be Jigglypuff.

I’d love to see an updated version of this now that we have the full roster
This video really puts into perspective how phenomenal Ultimate is, and how hard it is going to be moving forward. This video was very painful to watch, because every removed fighter (excluding some of the clones/more obscure characters) feels horrendous and like a direct blow to what Smash represents. Its a celebration of gaming history, so removing characters like R.O.B, Little Mac, and especially Captain Falcon (not to mention all the other characters I love like Dr. Mario that also got removed) goes against everything the game stands for.
Sakurai has stated that if there are Smash games in the future, getting ALL the characters back again is going to be very hard and future games will almost certainly need to decrease the roster size. This video is proof of how difficult and almost terrifying that prospect is going to be. There really won't ever be another Smash game like Ultimate...

I agree with most of your cuts, though I'm unsure if they'd really cut Ike instead of Byleth. I mean Ike has the less unique moveset, but he has become kind of the face for the fire emblem franchise in the west and is actually the most popular character of the franchise, getting a total of over 50k votes in the first Choose your legends in Heroes(if you combine his votes for both of his appearances, also note that only 3 characters managed to get over 30k) .
I'm also really glad that you had no qualms about removing some of the original 12, I feel like that is a fan rule that too many people take far too seriously, for no reason other than nostalgia(even if i personally disagree on cutting Falcon).

You lost me when you said you would remove the lone representative of the F-Zero series and the unofficial mascot of the Super Smash Brothers series. Captain Falcon is one of the most iconic characters from the entire series. The phrase “Falcon Punch” alone is enough to make you think of the game. He’s also one of the original 12 fighters from the first game in the series. He needs to stay.

I understand why Corrin was cut but saying one of the reasons is "The moveset doesn't exactly blow you away with uniqueness" is kinda iffy. one of the more unique ones out there.

Yeah Corrin is unique in the same vein of uniqueness as Byleth. Their uniqueness is mostly just gimicks, so arguably it's not really unique in the good sense, but you can't say that byleth is unique while corrin isn't.

jacob norris is argue they’re not. Their gimmick is using different weapons for different directional inputs. The only real gimmick is Up-B and maybe arrow. Everything else has analogs. Disjointed Nair (Ivysaur, Pit), a slow and powerful reversible special (Falcon, Ganondorf, Brawler) a long reach attack (Belmonts, swords)
They’re gimmick is a play-style that takes established risky moves and plays them stronger but riskier. That’s an actual play-style “high risk and high reward” while corrin barely has pin and fades into the sword roster

2. Banjo kazooie is one of the most important games of all time. Even though it isn’t talked much about, it paved the way for many of the games we have today. Also, how long has the smash community waited for banjo? A long time
3. Isabelle has to be in here. As a key part of the recent animal crossing. This is the character that most fans connect with.
Personally I'd cut Villager and keep Isabelle, she's basically the series mascot at this point (give her Villager's side special though, I can't STAND the fishing rod)

Either Banjo had to go, or two of the "Inkling, Olimar, Bayo, and Shulk" group had to go. All of them massively popular series, but if you look at these respective series, there's one that's been dormant a lot longer than the others... that being Banjo. And as for the other, it was either going to be Bayonetta or Shulk, they're about equal in terms of popularity and got big around the same time. They both represent a modern era. But I'd say keep Bayonetta, and remove Shulk. Bayonetta is slightly more iconic of a character in my opinion, and is one of the very few mature series to be featured in Smash Bros

This genuinely gave me an idea for some kind of movie like Infinity War. It takes place a few years after Galeem was defeated, everyone has settled down in the trophy world and all seemed calm. But deep down something was brewing, for the world was divided into two factions; the heroes and the villains. And at the center of it all was the villain league; lead by the most evil of villain with the current leader being Sephiroth. Sephiroth gets an idea on how to defeat the heroes once and for all. He orders everyone to gather the Chaos emeralds and the ultimate materia to create the super charm which he can use to eliminate half of the trophy world. Soon enough our heroes discover this plot and a great world war breaks out between good and evil. But then with a snap of his fingers, Sephiroth has done it and everyone who you have mentioned (except for the villains, and half of all the spirits) get snapped into oblivion.
Then I’m thinking a sequel of this would take place 5 years after that. Sora returns to Smash after spending his time in another world to find it has changed radically. Everyone seems depressed that they have lost a loved one and the main group has been split up. After looking around it is found that Kirby has eaten himself into being an obese blob, Mario has lost Peach, Luigi has lost Daisy, and Cloud was hit the hardest as he had lost all of his friends. After a lot of convincing Sora managed to get the group back together with the exception of Cloud, who is too depressed to go up against Sephiroth again. Then with the help of someone they learn how to master time travel so they can go back in time to fight Sephiroth once more and bring back what is right. At this point almost every villain has turned on Sephiroth even thinking he is too evil even for them. Now all that is left is Ganondorf until even he leaves. Then a great battle rages between everyone and Sephiroth who almost kills Mario until at the last moment Cloud steps in to kill Sephiroth and takes his super charm. At the last moment Sephiroth attempts to kill everyone once more but is thwarted by Cloud who snaps and Sephiroth and whoever sided with him in that battle dusts away. But the power of all the Chaos emeralds and the ultimate materia took a massive toll on Cloud and in his dying breath he says “stay where you belong Sephiroth… in my… memory.”
This is my stupid idea for a Smash movie, bully me and criticize it all you want.

The Original 12 have to stay, cutting even one will never happen, even if it’s only a fan rule. Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff have made their new home in Smash, becoming iconic parts of Smash history, away from their home series.
Isabelle is arguably more iconic than Villager, note the word *arguably.*
Clones shouldn’t take up an entire slot, if anything, should be counted separately as bonuses. They exist on being easier to develop, and are not fully original characters when it comes to their move set.
Even if Little Mac is from a basically dead series, his legacy can’t be ignored. He is recognizable as a retro character, to be remembered.
Nah. Villager has been in every game. I would say shes more popular in the fanbase, but villager represents AC so much better

Well, I have three reasons why I think Banjo will remain in Smash:
1- He was one of the most requested and loved fighters since Melee
2- Sakurai said it was very easy to get him on Smash
3- It is fair for Banjo to stay, since he was part of Nintendo's history on the N64 and GBA

As a Lucas main I feel like like the Lucas play style (or at least mine) is less about zoning and more about combos but while ness is more of a sober and an edge garder with less focus combos and more or less slowly build damage with special and smash attacks. That’s what I think though I could be completely wrong

While I agree with Falcon staying, saying that all of the original 12 can't get cut is only a fan rule. Puff has been considered to be cut in both Melee and Brawl(in fact Sonic's delay is possibly the reason she stayed), and Ness was supposed to be cut in Melee in favor of Lucas
Ditto while you also make a fair point, Nintendo could of easily cut both of them for smash 4, and didn’t. What I meant to express was that it is highly unlikely they will be cut.

@sufyu Surayma We only have Fox and Falcon as truly iconic smash characters from the OG 64 roster. Characters like Yoshi, Ness, Puff, and Kirby are more infamous (puff and Kirby don’t get complaints anymore because they suck). Donkey Kong, Mario, Luigi, and Link are indifferent at best. Pikachu is weird in that he is loved when he is not great or hated so much for being great (due to his small size, recovery, projectile, and pancake bullshit).

At this point, Wario has appeared in more Mario games than in his own series, same with Yoshi.
Sakurai may trick us into thinking Yoshi and Wario are not from the Mario series but their own series.
I disagree with this a lot, since they have even debutted in Mario Games, and their first own games go by the mario franchise name (Super Mario World 2 and Super Mario Land 3)

The list wasn't about who Nintendo would cut, to be fair. It was about Popularity, Moveset, and importance to gaming as a whole. FF7 was VERY important to videogames, of COURSE Cloud would make the cut for this criteria.

So many people wanted banjo in the game and I wasn't around for when mii fighter were added but I know that they aren't making a big impact on your experience playing smash. Banjo brought lots of people to smash looking to see their childhood friend in the game. In my opinion I probably wouldn't notice if the Mii Gunner disappeared. I would not care because while the concept is cool the execution really isn't that fun to play. In my opinion. Also captain falcon has kind of switched games from fzero to smash Bros. He is one of the first people I think of when I hear smash.

Almost no one is ever going to remove Falcon only because he's so iconic in terms of smash. If he wasn't there it wouldn't feel right, and emotional attachment is more important for some characters
