Charles Oliveira, a very high level BJJ black belt attempted to defend his UFC lightewight champion title against Sambo fighter Islam Makhachev and was easily beaten.

Yawn time to watch pride fc
One name that destroys this narrative: Kazushi Sakuraba
I'm in my late 50's so I was already training when word of the Gracies was bubbling up from the underground . I wrestled in Jr High and High School and my first formal training was , ironically , in Hapkido but the school I was at actually did teach a lot of throws, takedowns and grappling . So I always knew it was a very overlooked area for the vast majority of Martial Arts schools. At that time there was so many over-inflated egos and everybody thought there was no way anybody would be able to get inside and take them down. I got the first series of Gracie instructional tapes and even found a local teacher for the basics. Within a few years the first UFC came out and I watched it with some fellow students. I was rooting for some of the strikers I must admit but every time Royce got a clinch I said, well thats thats because I'd seen all the underground tapes already. It's been a LOT of fun watching the last few decades
The early ufc is a joke the bjj babies would not pair their fighters against the guys who would posture up and pound them like the pussies they are. The myth of bjj is built on lies.
Giving your back or having an extended open arm in ju-jitsu is like a shark smelling fresh blood.
I imagine that after etching beating, the Gracies offered to teach them
The guy that tapped in the second match before the rear choke I don’t blame. I remember wrestling and when someone has their arm tight around your throat it’s scary. It’s a natural reaction to protect our throats.
That push over with the knee is super necessary.
Steve always takes his socks off for Jui Jitsu, even while watching
Are you going to show any clips where jiu-jitsu losses?
My uncle Mark went against Rickson Gracie when they were doing these Gracie challenges.
It's too bad there's no video of it. Supposedly it was epic. Definitely the two most accomplished guys matching up in during this era.
Wrestlers could sometimes dominate these grappling matches but (without punches) had no way to really finish the fight and still weren't completely sure of when they were in danger. Steven's point about not being comfortable or oriented when your opponent liked being on their back was so true as well.
Rickson call it his toughest roll here - czcams.com/video/Q6OEART-wHY/video.html
And more about it from my uncle here (at 12 minutes) - czcams.com/video/_QJVT4HKpAw/video.html
That Fightlore video is badass. Thanks for the link. Mark is a beast! lol
What ended up happening to DuPont?
He died in prison around 2010.
Your uncle Mark was a complete legend
Mark also fought in the UFC as a replacement and beat Big Daddy Gary Goodridge!💪
When you said "my Uncle Mark," was not even thinking of Mark Schultz, then saw the link then username and was like oh dang! What a legend!
Look up Rufino dos Santos versus Carlos Gracie. When you won the Gracie challenge you'd get beat by lead pipes.
I believe the guy in the yellow shorts was Jason Delucia who also fought in the UFC in the early early days when Royce was ruling the roost there. He was on the Gracie Choke video.
I agree
It is. Royce hurt him when they fought in the UFC because of their history. Delucia went on to fight in Pancrase in Japan.
@@echopanda and Bas beat the crap out of him a few times.
My son does BJJ and he loves that shit when you say Strangle gang stay strong. You the man bro.
Encourage your son to keep going and never stop training 🙏🏾‼️
It is good for kids and girls to play but it’s not for fighting at all
Sir can you do a breakdown about Helio Gracie vs Kimura? It'll be an interesting video
kimura's old judo ground instructional from the 1970s
czcams.com/video/wldzW5FvjEI/video.html&start_radio=1
The kung expert in yellow trunks; I heard in another video that he was a Pancrasse fighter called Jason DeLucia, who also compeated in the early UFCs.
That’s the one Royce almost ripped the arm of in UFC2
Jason trained with the gracies afterwards.
Thanks for posting this Steven. I love your content but this was a treat to see the old Gracie challenges with new commentary.
The Kenpo guy was surprisingly composed to throw kicks after being taken down
This was great! Had so much fun. Thank you
The Segway got me to hit the like button.
I usually forget. 😂😂
Kind of the Segway; Steven Williams!
Lol man got a free Gracie elbow massage 😂
“Out of desperation, he tried to grab his pickle” has to be one of the best quotes I’ve ever heard in my life
Sweet. Show the Kimura v Gracie fight.
I do Gracie jiu jitsu, and the instructors told me to watch the challenge matches. pretty cool seeing them on here.
Just. Curious how mich have gracie jiu jutsu evolved since then ? How wpuld Rpyce handle the best in todays era in a match ?
@@Herkulez1981 it’s pretty self defense based not competition based so I’m assuming they wouldn’t do well against high level jiu jitsu guys but as far as the street goes I think they can handle themselves pretty well
@@dandork536 yeah i was thinkig about a pure jiu jutsu competion against todays top guys . Little i know it seems like it evolved quite alot since this movie
@@Herkulez1981Check out Julia Stoliarenko's UFC fight against McCann, she's a Roger Gracie black belt.
Thanks to the grace family BJJ is widespread without this Art none of Us would be able to Evolve 🙏🏿🥋🙏🏿🇧🇷❤🇧🇷❤🇧🇷❤🇧🇷
The main thing I got from this is at that time, jiujitsu practitioners knew takedowns. Now everyone pulls guard and that, in my opinion, makes jiujitsu almost useless against other martial arts. I’ve competed twice and I regularly train and I make it my goal to get better at takedowns and never pull guard unless I get taken down, even if it means I lose.
Depends on your school for sure. At my school it’s almost all former wrestlers and we have a judo class. There are other schools that are far more guard focused though to the point that in comps I know people from certain schools will pull guard
Depends on the school, any place I've trained has also had either Judo, or Wrestling incorporated into every training schedule
@@Urmomma5f4t For sure. I was lucky enough to join a school that has as much emphasis on wrestling as jiujitsu. I’m not sure if the majority of schools care about takedowns though.
Most schools train in wrestling and judo as well
You train Jiu Jitsu? You competed twice and somehow you’re an expert on what works now? Delusion
Any form of jiu jitsu is the most effective for handling yourself in a serious situation
No it isn’t 😂
KIMURA? Ezekiel? both JUDOKA, they liked it so much they named moves after them Ude Garami / Sode guruma jime
kimura destroyed helio gracie by the way
I was thinking about not going to class this evening. This video was the motivation I needed. Oss!
Great video Steven damn that would hurt. 👏👏💯
hapkido does have a lot of judo and jiujitsu techniques, it really depends on the school and instructor on how and if it's pressure tested.
If you have to qualify a whole martial art like that it’s because the average isn’t that good.
Yea, i do hapkido as well, it's just kickboxing and grappling basically MMA plus they teach you how to use sticks chucks staff ect
Hapkido is part of the ninja mind virus...It wants to be Jap JJ and falls short of Judo , wrestling or Bjj
I mean something is better than nothing, put someone in there they will learn reflexes, explosiveness, some biomechanical efficient movements, to stay calm etc
But that doesn’t mean the moves they show are useful
@@tearsintherain6311 I train in hapkido, I just MMA, we kickbox and grapple that's what it is
I've lived in Salt Lake City most of my life, and used to train at Pedro Sauer's. This was EPIC.
Did you train with Justin Angelos? He taught at the Pedro Sauer affiliate in Washington where I used to train.
Dude was getting beat soo bad he offered a happy ending for peace 😂😂😂
This isn't surprising knowing what we know now. However, the Gracies were recording everything in their gym. While it's likely that they dominated, if a fight didn't really go the way they wanted, that video was probably buried.
I like your commentary
Definitely keeping my eye on this channel
Good job
Yo fkrr, you keep it real. Been watching you grow keep it up!
Now I want to see a video where Steven reacts to hapkido
Many of the people that acceptewd the challenge, they literally said they were going to try to cripple or kill the Gracies... didn't work. LOL
You know that whole gym was juicing though
5:45 same could be said by Sakuraba to Gracies 🙃 (i'm not saying bjj is not effective, relax, it's a joke i train bjj myself)
Jiu Jitsu is definitely one of the best in 1 on 1. But outside of the cage or gym there tend to be more attacks by 2 or 3 people Where karate or boxing have more of a chance to survive.
This was the start of the UFC, the Gracies wanted to set out and prove that their jiu-jitsu was superior to other styles. It ha obviously evolved a lot since they started it.
They just made matchups that favored their boys. Bjj is horrid to use in fighting. It’s made for people to bend over and say thank you daddy
There's something weird about liking videos. It's so easy but I NEVER do it. Ur channel is the only one cuz I truly never see it coming 😂
I did not see that segway coming.
Good job!
Judo and Jiu Jitsu are completing each other
every video that you make is awesome
Nice to se royce giving the kung fu Guy some good old stockton
Slaps
Brasil *is* on the Continent of America so Royce Gracie was already known here!
👍
Notice the Gracies challenges never went to grapplers or wrestlers outside of being in he UFC when they could dictate rules. Never recorded the Rufino Dos Santos bout because they lost
Not against catch wresters. Karl Gotch’s protégé Sakuraba proved that.
That Brazilian accent was perfect lol
Why dose every graice challenge video remind me of a discovery Channel doc when a lion hunts sounding like a Brazilian morgan freeman.
Do Royce vs Matt Hughes.
so we are the Greco wrestlers in this
"Grab his pickle!"😂😂😂😂😂
Anyone coming into a gym trying to prove they are better than the instructors of that gym has already showed disrespect. Shouldn't be surprising when they are treated likewise.
not really when it's an open invite. bur we lack context how the encounter went before the fight, if the challenger was disrespectful or not. If he was polite and curious then kicking him off was disrespectful. If he was an asshole- justified.
Commentary is A1 lmaoo
Jon Bluming explained that his guy Chris Dolman would have won. However the Gracies wanted the fight just at home.
I like the bit at the end. Just my own perspective, to each their own, there can be a middle ground with the spirituality aspect and the reality of violence. One must have a very real understanding of what they are training to do, that you can take a life but you can't give it back; once you enact violence of any kind you can never erase the fact that you did that. When you have to really defend your life, it can mess with your head at times and make you have a feeling of regret over having to do something violent that allowed you to continue living. You'll feel rage at the person for forcing you to do that, rage at yourself for doing it even though it felt like you had no choice, it can cut you deep as any hurt I've felt. Finding peace there is the spiritual aspect of martial arts to me. You are training to break the human body, and sometimes the human body breaks without you doing a thing. Accident can kill even the greatest fighter. You have to be prepared for that reality, and be able to reconcile it with whatever personal spiritual beliefs you hold.
Kimura Judo Almost Kill the Father of Jiu Jitsu Hélio Gracie in a Fight, Sakuraba beat all family Gracie look Japan always the best.
Yeah, at the end of the fight the push or get off response is kind of ok. I am a 43 yr old, 5’5”, 165-170lb purple belt. Primarily no-gi over the last 4 yrs. Anyways we definitely get these ego battle guys that come in. I am generally the smallest guy high wise in my gym. I tend to be targeted to be the one to try to kill. It’s typically a 20 something, 200+lb, 5’10”-6’2 guy. Why me? Anyways I have embarrassed these guys. In my gym, we have “F@$K them” attitude towards that behavior. I have had my fair share of “death” matches I was unaware I was engaging in until it started. Not fun and it pisses me off, a lot.
Pedro is a legend.
This guy Pedro sauer is my head guy in my lineage. I am a student of his number 1 black belt. Pretty cool lineage to be apart of
Fedor Emilianenko is also a man with much experience. First of all he uses the opening time by advanced boxing actions that might already decide the fight before the struggle has really begun by clinch.
Frosted tips definitely had a concussion….
As a wrestler, I know other styles can beat us. BUT... I can confidently say, that if you throw a shot and it DOESN'T kill me, your next move will be being buried in the mud 😂
You HAVE to do the bas rutten bar safety video next you just have too since we are pulling out the classics
I’d love to read the article that the second guy wrote.
Hey Steven, this is Tunde. If you’re ever near Dallas, Texas. Please drop in to train with us at Double Five HV. (This is not a challenge 😂)
If you can find a video, the fight between, I think, Helio Gracie and the Japanese world champion in the 1940s, maybe 50s, where they fought twice and in one Group got his arm broken and kept fighting.
Those fights were what established BJJ to the Japanese that created JJ.
Helio* got his arm broken. It won't let me edit.
Helio was not perfect. He learned a lot by different experience.
The fighter you mentioned was none other than Masahiko Kimura, after whom the famous shoulder lock was named.
@@chrisbaldwin3148
One of the Gracies explained why Helio wanted to have the experience against one of the greatest of his time if not the greatest. Helio worked on his own method. It was notatited yet. Of course Helio was not very big against Kimura. However that should not do matter. Helio made his sons and grandsons great. It was a development from Helio to Royce. In opinion this is normal however just because this is the way to the top. This is nothing for girls who just want to learn 3 techniques against crazy violent male fools.
czcams.com/video/Bh6vp-hGmPE/video.html&si=vZS1xb6klgkcyiOT
One good thing about long legs is when I had people sit on my chest thinking they got it instead of wrapping my legs around there chest I was able to wrap my legs around the neck and squeeze while pulling back literally thought I was going to snap there neck how far it was bending back
Great Video, gives me more incentive to continue my BJJ training 👍🙏
2023: an MMA fighter walks in, easily stuffs his takedowns and kicks his legs away.
Accent @10:08 is on point
I'm gonna guess that the earlier part of the video shows the KF guy letting fly on the BJJ guy, and this is revenge.
Always respect to fighters that put the work in no matter what style at this point in time cuz I would love to learn all those styles if it was possible , but shot out to Hoboken New Jersey where I went to my first jujitsu Kempo classes and it was great becuz I learned a little something new in fighting that became useful later on in my life but boxing was something I really fell In love with that and stood there for 15 years in n out of juvi then prison and the boxing was my savior .
Boxing is the best skill you can have in a street fight. You really don’t want to go to the ground with someone outside of a bar your way to vulnerable to be kicked or stomped and if multiple attackers you gotta stay on your feet
Put in a gold medal Greco-Roman wrestler against jujitsu fighter....... mic drop!!!! No competition!!!
I bet Gracie never came up against a Dim Man Master. Or a Ninja Master. That would be a different story, for sure.
I wanna see you Jujitsu versus more than 1 person at a time because that is street fighting
Someone offer seagull an amount of money he can’t refuse so we can see him get humiliated and eat his lies
Hey that guy with the yellow shorts did pretty well!
That's Lance Bachelor the big guy he ended up in federal prison for steroids
No catch wrestlers , that’s interesting .
Are they supposed to drag wrestlers in the gym? If no wrestlers show up to challenge then what can they do?
Roice Gracie is definitly skilled, but also a nasty fighter. Most forms of submission grappling have been demonstrated time and time again as the superior martial art against other styles, but the great thing about it is the possibility of controlling the opponent without causing a lot of damage. Not only did Roice extend the fights and hurt his opponent purpesfully, but also showed no respect or sportsmanship towards him.
In this same video, Rorion Gracie shows a much higher level of self control and respect for their opponents.
Props to Roice for being a great fighter, but his attitude is no example to follow.
One really basic advantage that jiu jitsu has over pretty much every other martial art is that nearly all the training is live action. You have to constantly test your moves against a live person that's not just going to let you do it. No katas, or punching air. Only real adaptive humans.
It has no advantages just weakness. Stop
9:46 Someone please snip this bit.
man your videos are about the only ones i ever remember to throw a like. Let alone a comment.
the kne thing is ok
90s Gracie open challenge = a free ass whoopin 🙌
Good Judo teaches to fight from guard
Let’s see jujitsu v Fedor .
V Ken shamrock without the conditions imposed by the Gracie’s jujitsu v Chuck Liddell. We all know jujitsu is top knotch . But you best believe there are other practitioners that will phuch up the best jujitsu has to offer
What about BJJ vs Volkinovski?! We seen that match. Ortega got humiliated!
Jiu-Jitsu is a tough sport
The Segway King! All hail
I’m just a random appreciator of BJJ, never taken any formal MA training outside of a karate class. But seeing this video makes me realize how superior BJJ is in a practical sense.
Joudain vs Gracie easy win for Jourdain
Rickson Gracie and Royce Gracie 💪🏽
Please let me remind you when Matt Hughes beat hoyce Gracie. I like all MMA i love kick boxing 🥊💪
A Well Done Video. The Gracie Clan has always been willing to
'explain' their method(s) until completely understood by........ anyone.
hey man I have been doing karate for the past 7 years and it's a style with a lot of grappling and stricking techniques and we spar often, do you think it's leggit?
OG GJJ might've been effective. Modern sport BJJ? Not at all in my own experience. 27 years training in Judo and JJJ, I got my Blue-belt in BJJ after two years, starting on my ass or knees doing virtually zero takedowns eliminated 90% of my game. Like it or not, Jesse Encamp was right, just stand up and disengage. For sure no-one wanted to stand.
