  • This Steve's Garage video covers the simple process of replacing your worn out MK4 VW shifter bushings from rubber to solid metal units that you can purchase from 42 Draft Designs. The work was done on a 5spd 1.8t MK4 Jetta, but replacing shifter bushings on any manual transmission VW is a similar process. Leave a comment and let me know if this video helped you replace the shifter bushings on your VW, MK4 or not! I do not take responsibility for any damage you may do to your car, this is meant as a guide for people that already have basic automotive knowledge.
    Solid shifter bushings for your MK4 VW is an inexpensive upgrade, and the installation doesn't take long at all. I recommend this for anyone who hasn't replaced the shifter bushings in their MK4 VW, as they will definitely be very worn, if not totally broken like mine were. Upgrading your VW to solid shifter bushings only makes the shifter feel and engagement better, and really has no negative side effect.
    Thank you for watching, and please comment if you have any questions. I will help you as much as I can.

    Hi just watched your video, very helpful but as soon I saw the video it made me think of filling the gaps with Polyurethane, as a stop-gap repair. It's reckoned that engine mounts filled with P can last up to three years.

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! I suppose you could, not something I've ever heard of doing though. The metal inserts, or even new rubber cable ends are cheap enough that it's probably not worth the trouble of filling them and making your own.

    Does this upgrade help with excessive shifter movement while in gear as well? my TDI has 150k on it and I want to improve the sloppy shift feel but also the shifter moves around ALOT like in 2nd gear for example

      Elijah J - You need to checkout Dieselgeek. The play is likely at the shifter box.

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  Před 3 lety

      No cover on these, though it's my understanding that pre-02 the shifter cable ends were different. Do yours look like a ball and socket style? If that's the case, you need different cable ends to run the bushings.

      If the shifting doesn't feel good or not getting into gear properly, than you could do a cable adjustment, but I didn't do one when I installed the bushings because my shifting was fine with the exception of the warn old bushings.

    Steve's Garage wouldn't this also increase friction to wear out parts faster where they make contact?

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  Před 6 lety

      I personally haven't heard of that happening. I do know what you mean, but I don't think it's much of a concern. I ran the solid bushings for a while before installing a Dieselgeek short throw, and I didn't have any issues. I've upgraded many parts to solid or stiffer components, and my car has almost 185kmi, so if they caused any major issues, I would have seen it by now.

      Steve's Garage ok thank you for fast response. I was wanting to get a short throw shifter but they don't make it for 02a trans any more it seems like. I have a 99.5 VW golf

      @StevesGarage  Před 6 lety

      Yea not problem, happy to help! I've heard it's difficult to find anything for the 02a, and the 99.5 cars in general. These solid inserts to make a difference, and it's nice because they're cheap and easy to install. I'm not too positive, but is there are way to possibly retrofit the linkage from an 02j onto the 02a so you could get something like the dieselgeek short throw? I own an 02, so luckily I don't have any issues finding parts.
