With how important education is in South Korea I can't believe they're starting to go the same direction as the US where teachers are not only undervalued, but even abused to the point of suicide sometimes. It's absolutely horrific.

I´m from Europe. That Parents complain about Kindergarten- or Schoolteachers is also quite common here. Sadly. I guess times have changed in this sense. But the kneeling part to ask for forgivness is honestly quite extreme. Here Teachers usually get backed up by insitituion as long as it wasnt something serious.

I second this. I only worked as a tutor part time in a school in Spain and I got complaints that I was being too harsh or mean with the kids. I was only in each class for 30 minutes to 1 hour so I was pretty shocked considering I barely had any authority to punish any kids at all for misbehaving. The ones who I did punish, were severely distracting the class and my ability to teach. There is no other way as far as I’m aware

I was a public highschool teacher and let me tell you this happens everywhere for the last 20 years more or less, the students have lost all respect and you, as a teacher need to toughen up sometimes doing things you will never thought you would do like threaten a student or daring them to meet outside school but being a woman they laughed at me, but thnkfully never dared to meet me outside but a companion teacher who is a male didnt have the same luck as me, he was followed and hit not only by the student but by his father!!!!! at his bus stop when he was coming home....TERRIBLE!

A very informative video - I appreciate the work you put into creating this content for us, Sienna. It’s incredibly shocking to hear about the mistreatment of South Korean teachers. I understand academic pressure is practically ingrained into the South Korean culture, however what do you, personally, think are some measures the government can establish to reduce this?

What youre sharing here is so valuable. People from outside Korea, and probably most of foreign travelers in Korea, only experience the side Korea is willing to show.

I have a few questions about Korean culture amongst younger generations. I am wondering about how the age/elder/sunbae respect culture is continuing and/or possibly eroding amongst younger Koreans. I consume some kpop content, so I know it is very common for groups to use honorifics if there are even 1 year older. I also know that bowing and greeting sunbaes, supporting your right arm with your left hand when shaking hands, etc. is a way koreans, and specifically kpop idols show respect. However, I have also seen some people talk about the lack of greeting and manners in junior idols, specifically not bowing, speaking informally, etc. Now, with this video, I am hearing about a lack of respect towards teachers who are authorities in any society, whether it’s Korea, the US, etc. I am wondering is this part of a broader trend amongst young koreans to “westernize” a bit more and become less strict about the age and sunbae hierarchy? Would you say using honorifics towards elders, not eating until the oldest eats first, younger bowing first to the older, using honorifics and calling 형, 누나 to someone who is one year older, etc. are declining in korean society, specifically amongst young koreans? Could you see this culture going away with future generations? Personally, this is one of the things I’ve always loved about korean culture, so I would be a bit sad to see it go. Another theory I have heard is that generally youth rebel against this culture but jump into it all the way when they are older. I am curious to learn about possible changes in korean society.

oh my god. What are happening to teachers is horrible, not fair, and not good for the school, for the kids. The parents should take responsability and be realistic of what to expect of a kid. The behavior of school directors is not good at all as well. Not good for the kids, for the parents, for the teachers that suffer the most.

Honestly I wish public schools would shut down and all children were required to online classes only.
Except I know that would never happen because then these lazy do-nothing parents would actually have to RAISE their kids. And I've noticed most of them actively try to avoid that once they realize how difficult and draining being a mother or father actually is.
