The kind i found and easy to get is called daphnia magna, anyway ill read up more of these but maybe you have some answers, or maybe if u want make an update of the litle tank you have either way, you are awesome, getting alot of good tips from you! :)

I know daphnia are sensitive, but is it possible that the ones that hide in the plants, breed and become self sustaining for the fish and themselves?

The fish will always find them before they reproduce. Best to breed them in a bucket separately.

It would be Possible.. But, you would have to make a pretty special setup for that.
Much easier to section off a tank for breeding scuds or snails. Any that escape their area are eaten.
