as someone who owns a fully built G8GT at 20 there’s one thing that’s needed to be known. THESE CARS ARE NOT CHEAP OR BUDGET FRIENDLY. there absolutely amazing cars and reliable cars. but if you don’t wanna be at the pump everyday you don’t want one of these. also when your buying parts a lot of them are extremely hard to find since there discontinued. luckily tho the g8gt and gxps fit most corvette or ctsv parts, but again, not budget friendly.😂
I had a 3.6 I swapped with an ls3 and 6l80e and im confused on what parts you couldn't find or were too expensive? I did a full gt swap interior and mechanical for under 5k then went fbo and s/c making 560whp for under 6k, lowered 1 1/4" on bc racing and literally any part I needed was at the nearest junkyard or same week delivery bc they're a dime a dozen
@@weimaraners4822the only stuff that's hard to find really is exterior and some interior bits. Most mechanicals are shared with other GM vehicles and aren't hard to find.
As a former base, GT, and SS owner keep in mind that the parts for these cars are getting very hard to find and expensive especially for the ss (I can’t stress that enough). If you live in a big city most likely these cars will be abused so if you can try to look somewhere further away from the city for one of these cars. If you’re getting a base model be aware or the timing chain issue and for the GT be aware of the lifters failing due to “AFM” (active fuel management) but this usually happens after 120k miles
Definitely get that done asap, and make sure you go with quality replacement lifters. I had LS7 lifters when I bought the car and those failed and caused some catastrophic failure
Yup, haven’t heard anyone have issues with Johnson lifters. I have an LS3 swapped into my G8 right now so I don’t have to worry about any of that for a long long while haha

I agree, the 6.4 in the hemi is nice but it can’t be as modded as the G8. You can supercharge, turbocharge, nitrous, or do a full NA build on a G8. With the Charger the most I see done is a catback and intake. They’re still great cars but I’d rather have a G8 haha.

Just bought 2009 G8 GXP (White) to add to my 2017 SS (Black) and my 2022 CT5-V Caddy (White). Can't wait until it arrives. The GXP is a manual 6 speed. (The SS and CT5-V are automatics.) I love these cars. The last of the fast ones. Will hold them all for a while. Building a nice stable. May buy another SS and add a Whipple to it just for fun. Nice video. Love the car.
Just brought what's probably the highest mileage g8 v6 for 1500. Has 285k. The engine runs, but the car goes in gear but won't move. The seller told me it had trans issues. I plan on putting either a 5.3 or l92, but for now I wanna fix the trans and daily it.
Upshifting is hard to calculate since it’s delayed so if you don’t time it right it’ll bounce off the rev limiter. And if you leave it in sports mode and mash the gas on a 40 roll it sometimes will hunt for gears. There’s nothing wrong with the way I did it

Dude I have a base trim G8 with that signature red with orange highlight G8 colour, and it’s still got PLENTY of get up and go-and for a heavy sedan she handles like a dream. Road trips are wicked… drove across Canada when I first bought it. You’re spot on about the front end… it’s sexy and looks mean with the flared wheel wells! Most people have no idea what kind of car it is. So many people ask me what it is and think it’s nice, but when they pull up beside me at the lights, they aren’t ready for what’s under the hood! a dude from Australia come up to me asking how I got I holdem🤣 I want to get a crate engine and just turn it into a mad machine…not worried about money at all.

Wouldn’t mind some tips or advice when I get going on it. I want to leave her (Scarlett) body looking humble and classy but with a big fu$&-you under the hood. I know with upgrades it means you also have to upgrade the next thing, just not sure what. New engine means new tranny, new cooling system, new etc etc etc. just not sure what those must do’s are.
Agree bro picked mine up 16k clean title 1 owner with 6 piston front 4 piston back red brembo, Red and black interior,$1200 headlight, cat back ehaust, 2022 ss midnight wheels , just to name a few at least another 3k in add ons I had to put in already 12k of my own money in 6 months Full engine rebuild with dod delete new high pressure oil pump all the goodies New 3.27 diff New set of headlights 1200 Radio was bad causes all them to go out All replaced $900 with new radio and program New red suede headliner cuz other was hanging Another 1500 for all the control arms and bushings I had to replace So much more. Don’t get these if you are not ready 💰
I'm the original owner of a 09 GXP and it is better than my first car a 67 GTO with the 400 HO, both automatics. The GXP handles like it's on rails and stops on a dime. I sold the GTO after 30 yrs and bought a 96 Porsche 993 Targa, although I miss the GOAT sometimes. The GXP is the perfect replacement 13.0 qtr mile stock vs. a best of 13.44 in the goat. I'll be selling the GXP in the spring as I still have the 993 and a 77 280z, which will also be sold because although retired, I don't have the health and time to dedicate to all of them. Get the car you love and enjoy it while you can, cause someday, you might be able to.
Ive had my gt for 10 years and im starting to get all the common 6L80 issues. Debating if its worth keeping or selling it since prices are crazy on these right now.
I'm currently having the 6l80 in my G8 GT rebuilt, for me it's worth the price of the rebuild, about $5.5k with upgraded parts, but it is ultimately up to you.
The G8 is like Holden and GM had a pair of twins in Australia, one they called Commodore VE and the other was sent overseas to the US and given a foster home, a trusted couple well known to GM called the Pontiacs, they gave their new adopted baby the name G8. Like twins raised apart you still get some differences but essentially the same. It's awesome Australia and the US has this Auto connection. Just a shame GM could have allowed Holden to continue just making specialty cars for specific market, both here and abroad. hi end power 4 door sedans and utes that could have really created a rare situation where these cars future was a cooperative development of HSV and your American equivalent. HSV have been doing Chevys now for some years.
You mentioned how hard you driving since it's the GT how have you experienced the transmission? I've heard mixed reviews on the auto transmission for the GT. Also what is that infotainment that you have and where can I get it? Is it a pain to get it paired to the steering wheel??
Bought 1 new in 09. PBM/19s/red/black interior. Fun cars. Head turner at the time, especially when murdered out and had a cam installed. Would I buy 1 today, maybe. I'd do an SS if anything.
I got one for 10k but bro it’s missing so much interior stuff 😢 other than that it’s not mechanically terrible came with some goodies like an exhaust, dod delete ,cam ,converter caddy breaks in the front. But regardless it’s a very fun car.
Full bolt ons with a DOD delete and cam swap is pretty good for 10k! Look at days parts yard for some interior pieces he’s got everything you could need.
My 09 GXP is amazing to drive, I hate when I leave it parked to keep the miles low. The power is addicting from the ls3, and adding the VCM CAI caused the car to be more responsive. Still need to get the car tuned with the CAI
I bought my 2008 G8 GT when they first released here. I ended up putting a Corsa catback exhaust and Kooks mid-length headers on it, plus a dyno tune to get everything flowing properly. That has always been the best sounding car I've ever owned, and the fact it was a 4dr roomy sedan was just a bonus. I ended up trading it in for a 2013 Mustang GT 5.0 Cal Spec convertible. I wish I still had it, but I doubt it would have lasted into 2023 without doing major mechanical work to it.

Id say no cause my g8 broke every other week its was always something from lifter failure to drive shaft bearings to transmissions failures hell even the door speakers stopped working better off getting the newer chevy Ss
Only issue i have with my g8 is the rain, i am on stock tire and wheel setup but i find that its a little more prone to hydroplane than the other vehicles i drive

Did you have to mess with any of the computer settings when you put the 6.2 in ?? Absolutely worth looking at, hard to find G8’s with low miles. Is it stock? If so, be sure to save for a DoD delete. Even at 55k miles it can still fail and cause a lot of damage.

@@Batssassin It depends where you go, one shop here quoted me 8k the other 4k. For mods I’d do intake, headers, catback, DoD delete/cam kit, 3.45 gears (if staying NA, 3.27 for boost), coilovers, Brembo brake kit, dash kit + head unit
Great, until you can't find an A/C compressor disharge hose. If you live in northern Canada, this will not be an issue. If you live in Texas. Look out. You will not be driving this car in the summer if that hose springs a leak.
Only the 2009.5 has retractable cup holders in the rear seat. Plus they also have a bluetooth headunit. Mine is an 09 GT stryker blue and its all original and un molested. It's my 2nd stryker blue. The 1st one was ran hard and not well taken care of. Sold it and bought another one that is identical but in mint condition.
You don’t have to do Brembo’s if you only have a GT. I replaced my pads and rotors with a PowerStop kit for around $400 and that was 2 years ago. Brakes have held up great since.
I had a 3.6 fully gt swapped interior and mechanical eventually vortech s/c it and made about 560whp on a cool mi day and it was an absolute road ripper with unbelievably good handling for its size but ive since moved on to a 2018 awd q50rs making 617whp and a 09 saab 9-7x with ls2 that also has a vortech s/c making 680whp and i dont think i could ever trade these to have that g8 again
See if the DOD has been deleted, if it hasn’t then be prepared to do that fairly soon. Some common G8 issues include: Bad front strut mounts, head liner sagging, carrier bearing going out, DOD lifter failure, radiator fan motors going bad (and this will cause the radiator fan plug to melt).
As a 09 Holden Commodore VE (09 Pontiac G8) owner, I'd rather have a V6 3.6L rather then the GT, because the GT's engines are trash & need DOD always. I have a V6 & i'm at 221k miles never replaced the timing chains or the transmission. Only thing i ever had to replace was the transmission filter after i hit 220k & the alternator. As long as you keep up on oil changes you will never need to replace the timing chain. 😎
I mean I wouldn’t say they are trash, just swap the cam and valvetrain parts and you’ll be good. The V6’s are slow and boring, sure they’re fine for commuting but if you want an actual fast car they are not good lol.
The V6 sufferers from poorly made PCV due to the emissions system. It is restricted and allows the oil vapor in the engine to get really hot . No big deal if you change the oil frequently but if not it forms solids and they get into the timing chain tensioners causing the system to eventually fail. You also need to use an oil that is capable of holding the gunk in suspension for the service period. This was quite an issue early on. Also an absolute pain to do a thermostat. Those V6 engines were designed by SAAB for FWD cars not RWD . I have an L98 in my Commodore no DOD and it runs sweetly.

When you do 40 rolls and such don’t slap it back over to normal mode. Just upshift her accordingly. Or run her in sport mode 100% of the time.

I’m looking at one around my area, it’s a gt 09, 24k with 55k miles, 2 previous owners and allegedly only personal use. Thoughts worth looking into it?
Absolutely worth looking at, hard to find G8’s with low miles. Is it stock? If so, be sure to save for a DoD delete. Even at 55k miles it can still fail and cause a lot of damage.

@@Batssassin It depends where you go, one shop here quoted me 8k the other 4k. For mods I’d do intake, headers, catback, DoD delete/cam kit, 3.45 gears (if staying NA, 3.27 for boost), coilovers, Brembo brake kit, dash kit + head unit

Great, until you can't find an A/C compressor disharge hose. If you live in northern Canada, this will not be an issue. If you live in Texas. Look out. You will not be driving this car in the summer if that hose springs a leak.

Only the 2009.5 has retractable cup holders in the rear seat. Plus they also have a bluetooth headunit. Mine is an 09 GT stryker blue and its all original and un molested. It's my 2nd stryker blue. The 1st one was ran hard and not well taken care of. Sold it and bought another one that is identical but in mint condition.

I have a GT 2009 and I need a new brake and rotor kit. I can’t afford Brembos do I need them? I just got this car and I have a lot to do to it!
You don’t have to do Brembo’s if you only have a GT. I replaced my pads and rotors with a PowerStop kit for around $400 and that was 2 years ago. Brakes have held up great since.
That’s what I did, I got slotted rotors and carbon ceramic brakes.
Got it on the dyno and man I was shocked. I’m at 515😅

Technically speaking you can, but that still won’t prevent the lifters from failing. Needs to be mechanically removed.
I had a 3.6 fully gt swapped interior and mechanical eventually vortech s/c it and made about 560whp on a cool mi day and it was an absolute road ripper with unbelievably good handling for its size but ive since moved on to a 2018 awd q50rs making 617whp and a 09 saab 9-7x with ls2 that also has a vortech s/c making 680whp and i dont think i could ever trade these to have that g8 again
I actually just got as a gift a g8 but it's the base 😢. Although I'm fine with it, I'm not a huge car guy.
All it takes is a set of wheels and some aftermarket stuff and they can look so mean

No paddle shifters on this car, you could do a 5th Gen Camaro steering wheel swap with the shifters and get it hooked up to the tap shift though
There’s also a company who makes a kit for the G8 steering wheel that adds the paddle shifters.
I got one close by with 91k for 15 k Facebook what should I ask him about the failures
See if the DOD has been deleted, if it hasn’t then be prepared to do that fairly soon. Some common G8 issues include: Bad front strut mounts, head liner sagging, carrier bearing going out, DOD lifter failure, radiator fan motors going bad (and this will cause the radiator fan plug to melt).

The GXP is rated for 415 crank horsepower from the factory
As a 09 Holden Commodore VE (09 Pontiac G8) owner, I'd rather have a V6 3.6L rather then the GT, because the GT's engines are trash & need DOD always. I have a V6 & i'm at 221k miles never replaced the timing chains or the transmission. Only thing i ever had to replace was the transmission filter after i hit 220k & the alternator. As long as you keep up on oil changes you will never need to replace the timing chain. 😎
I mean I wouldn’t say they are trash, just swap the cam and valvetrain parts and you’ll be good. The V6’s are slow and boring, sure they’re fine for commuting but if you want an actual fast car they are not good lol.

The V6 sufferers from poorly made PCV due to the emissions system. It is restricted and allows the oil vapor in the engine to get really hot . No big deal if you change the oil frequently but if not it forms solids and they get into the timing chain tensioners causing the system to eventually fail. You also need to use an oil that is capable of holding the gunk in suspension for the service period. This was quite an issue early on. Also an absolute pain to do a thermostat. Those V6 engines were designed by SAAB for FWD cars not RWD . I have an L98 in my Commodore no DOD and it runs sweetly.

There is a lot involved with LS swapping the base V6, if you go on the Facebook G8 owners group a lot of people will tell you it’s not worth it.
