The Fancy Answer to the EVO/STI: 2008 VW R32

  • If a Honda Civic and an EVO had a baby, and sent it to boarding school, this is it: The 2008 Volkswagen R32 was a performance variant of the popular GTI. It has a 3.2 liter VR6 engine making 250HP at 6300RPM (10 more than the Mk 4 R32), with torque remaining at 236 ft-lbs. With the paddle-shifted DSG gearbox it would hit 60MPH in 6.2s, putting the power through a Haldex front-wheel-biased AWD system. The R32 always trailed the Subaru STI and Mistubishi VO in terms of speed and agility, but in felt like a higher-quality car, and it was more, uh, mature looking than its wing-wearing competitors. Kyle brought this clean example wearing one of the best blues ever created, Deep Blue Metallic.

      @TML34 Před 5 lety +3

      @@jomaha9227 Electric power steering simulates the amount of effort for the steering via load sensors this results is a very "muted" feel of the road surface. The programing software of the steering helps, but unless you're driving a 911, the road feel just isn't as good. But it's lighter than hydraulic systems and because there's no parasitic drag on the engine, you also get slightly better fuel economy.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 5 lety +13

      @@jomaha9227 It depends on a lot of things. First is the type of mechanism they use. Good EPS systems have the assist motor attached to the rack (like Porsche). Some system have the assist box in the middle of the steering shaft, usually for packaging, which adds moving parts and reduces feel.
      Then there's the amount of boost the steering gets. Some cars over-assist to make the car easier to steer.
      It's not easy to tune an assist system to amplify the driver's input enough to move the wheels without overdoing it.

    If the windshield washer light is on, and the reservoir is full, its the sensor. If you're using the RainX orange, it can cause some residue or building up on the sensor causing the fault. I usually use white vinegar, 50/50 with the washer fluid to clean it up, and get the light to go away.

      Glad someone said this, I had a 2008 Audi A6 with the exact same issue. Apparently it's common with these cars. There actually was a class action suit against RainX because of it, a lot of cars (not just VW/Audi) use that sensor and RainX said on the bottle it would be compatible with all brands, even though the high silicone content of the washer fluid would gum up the sensor.

    damn Z...so many info errors about this car. The steering is electronically assisted. There is a traditional rack and pinion attached directly to the wheel. You can't feel what the tires are doing because the owner has some below average tires on it and his bushings are probably shot to shit. Looking at those stock engine mounts, i can only assume the bushings for the suspension are stock too. This is a tuner car just like anything else, mods need to be performed to bring some life out of it. Also the ESP on this car is a joke. I never drove with it on as it is horribly intrusive with braking and aggressive on-throttle inputs through corners. This car needs 255 squared at the very least to feel good through the corners, those stock 225 tires are a joke. I'm probably the only R32 owner in Socal that would thrash it as hard as anyone else on AC. Hopefully it'll be back out thrashing again soon.

      this seems funny to me. you know germans hype the R32 just because it sounds good and it's one of the few decent hatchbacks made here. cars in germany are expensive, petrol is expensive and many people in our country have plenty prejudices against imports. and we drink a lot of beer. so never take anything a german sais about a car as true. people are out here investing 20k€ into their fiat multipla....

      I agree. Drove the car a few years back and while it’s fun to hear the engine note, it was slow and pretty much only suited for daily driving. Mk6 gti dsg is a way better car with much more room for improvement. The market for this car is just for vw enthusiast, but performance oriented buyers should stay away

      Same thoughts exactly. Handled well up to 6/10th. Beyond that it was clumsy and unsorted. Mine died on me 3 times with less than 9,000 miles. The third time was on the w'burg bridge during rush hour and almost got me killed. Blessing in disguise, the lemon was totalled and I got to move on!

      That seems to be the general feedback for the mk5 R32, shame because it looks and sounds fantastic I think. The gen 3 haldex and updated DSG in the MK7 Golf R is a heaps more sophisticated system and you lose the front heavy characteristics and it certainly doesn't lack speed! If you get the chance to drive one, I think you'll be happily surprised by comparison to the R32!

Gas mileage is bad, handling is OK (especially on stock width tires), reliability is ok at best. It's all about the sound and the look, if you're into those.

    Thanks to the owner for bringing out this fun hatch -- love the blue. Yep, PA state inspections are a thing. If you drive over 5k miles / year, there is an emissions test. Additionally, tires, brakes and lighting (typical safety stuff) are checked. With the state of roads in PA (condition and age), it is a good thing that all [legally] driven cars are given an annual review. We can't afford to have junkers driving around and breaking down on two lane roads or antiquated four lane highways.

    IMO this is the benchmark for me as far as hatch backs. The 04 my fave by far. Even though the awd is biased the rear ass lifts equating to the steer influence all melding with the awd etc. makes it an "animal" to drive vs the video game torque vectoring etc tech and rev matching etc. To get a r32 to go fast is where the fun comes into play. I had one, mint conditions, bought it with 26k miles, sold it with 28k. It's much more a sense of occasion than this MK5 and much rarer too, engine sound is great and the shape is just gorgeous. BUT, I had some issue with the Haldex ECU that are not available anymore from VW so you either source one used or you get one reconditioned by VW at a staggering cost. If you don't drive fairly regularly fuel pumps tends to go and even if the engine is quite bullet proof it may have some quirks sooner or later. Overall a good car but maintenance costs, if something fail, can be a little scary or just not as straight forward as you may think.
