However, with this uprise of popularity, Midjourney, the most popular AI art platform on the planet, dropped a bomb. Midjourney stopped their free trial tier due to rampant abuse.
Is this abuse the result of these popular political images or is it because of something else?

I love that their solution to preventing people from just making alt accounts was just to pretend the issue didn't exist. They may be tech bros, but that doesn't mean they're smart or do critical thinking.
The only dumb thing is how long it took them to finally do away with the trials, considering how long they'd been abused for. StableHorde has been way better to work with, though.

Free trials are nice, but not like that. If it were locked behind having to have a phone number associated with your account then they could bring the free trials back.
I mean the real reason is just money. Companies just say whatever sounds good rather than "We wanted to remove something that was a huge cost and instead push people towards subscriptions".
Such a surprise, a costly free plan got canceled (I wonder where have I seen this before)

As a person that has made auth systems that prevent people from making loads and loads of accounts, i can tell you this:
1. Discord need to require phone verification after like 5 alts are made on 1 IP
2. Midjourney should put a limit on the age of the accounts allowed to generate images
yep literally 1 of those things needs to happen to prevent poeple just making loads and loads of accounts for midjourney credits.
1. Easy to bypass using a VPN
2. There are people out there who have a whole bunch of old discord accounts, and not just that what if someone creates a discord account because they want to mid journey and not for some malicious use?

Midjourney cost way less than commissioning artist. There are some trade offs but I'd say for the vast majority of people and use cases AI art is the better deal.
Also there are plenty of other AI art generator that are pretty good.
Can also just use stable diffusion and use your own computer but takes some time to set up and obviously need a good computer.

Commissioning an artist gives you better control over the art, and you can also ask to have art made that the AI-generators usually prevents you from generating. Like if you want a pikachu giving a lucario a wedgie, AI-art is not going to provide you with that.

It's Stable Diffusion. However, Midjourney tends to be ahead in terms of quality. While Stable Diffusion XL will close the gap a lot, MJ will still yield better overall results.
@@SkyyySi this is wrong stable diffusion can generate just as high quality as midjourney if not better but you need to know how to prompt it I like to think of midjourney as having less control but easier use if you dont know what your doing but if your really good at prompting you can easily generate something better looking with stable diffusion because of the more control and precision

It always brings a smile to my face when AI has a bad day. These people work off of stolen art. That means even using the engine makes you complicit. And no, you are not an artist if you use it. I made intervoyage. Which is basically midjourney but it's free and uses openjourney instead. Openjourney is a stable diffusion model fine-tuned on images from midjourney

If you are not a jerk and can make your own bot its better than midjourney. Like Replit have dozens of GPT-3 api using image creation / text creation AI bots. You can easily make one by just forking and getting an API key (18$ credit free)

Dall-E 2 is lower quality. It's about on-par with Stable Diffusion, but the latter has the advantage of being free.
Guys, this is temporary, they will come back with the free accounts, but they will improve so that no one has to create alternative accounts. Maybe add a system of a specific number of images per day or something

And for the people with good enough pcs just run stable diffusion webui on your pc. I literally started using ai on a 1060 gpu and while it was slow it got the job done. It's not like midjourney is the only way to generate ai images.
I can see more people simply going over to Stable Diffusion or some other free solution instead of paying up due to this lol
I don't know how much it costs to run those servers but I think it's reasonable to say it's a lot and asking for payment is fine.
I already used up my trial and subscribed at the cheapest tier, it's well worth it for what you get. I just wish the cheapest tier had access to the "free" slow mode. $30/mo is a bit much to spend just for that. You can rent an entire dedicated server for that money. Slow mode is using up free resources that wouldn't be used otherwise, so it's not costing them anything to provide it, but I understand that they need some incentive for people to subscribe at the more expensive tiers because it costs a lot to run a large scale AI.

Wouldn't fix anything. Make it 1 week and people will just mass generate thousands of accounts and sell them after 1 week. Make it 1 year and they will solve the problem for a year, but inconvenience a lot of legitimate users in the process and after the year is up, they'd be back to the same issue.
Midjourney was on beta, so they gave an they gave us the opportunity to test it out. But it is not on beta now, because of that they removed the free trial.
