  • I love to prune my plants and trees and so I just got out there and did some pruning on my espaliered apple and pear trees. This time of year we're pruning the new sucker growth so that we can encourage fruit spurs that will fruit the following spring.
Pruning fruit trees, including apple and pear, in the summer will encourage fruit spurs to grow. Pruning in the winter will encourage sucker branches to grow the following summer.
I love the espaliered look of these fruit trees. The espalier style of pruning keeps your trees at a level that is easily managed and it keeps the garden looking nice and tidy.

Love your enthusiasm! You simplify an otherwise intimidating process. I watched this and went right out and gave my espaliers a radical haircut. Thanks!

Wow Mike! Your videos are inspiring! I remember as a little girl seeing a pic in an old book on fruit trees where they trained apple trees into a lattice pattern and I’ve always wanted to do it ever since! Now I

Brilliantly explained. Many thanks for simplifying it when so many experts make it so complicated. Love your enthusiasm too. Top man.

Bro, thanks for the pruning tips. Seems like every video I watch says a lot but I come away still unsure. You explained it really well and I have greater confidence in my pruning and a conceptual grasp of the ‘why’ of pruning.
