I think childless adults send a great message. We can be empathetic to your plight without having to be directly affected by it. We don't need to have a LGBTQ+ child to understand they deserve rights. We don't need children to want the planet to be habitable for the next generation. We understand the importance of education and kids having at least 1 meal a day to eat at school. We understand how hard it is for families with kids to afford child care. We don't need children to understand that every life is important and deserves healthcare not tied to their employment. We understand that pregnant people deserve the best care decided between them and their doctor. Just because you don't have children is doesn't mean that you hate children or don't care about the future of this country. It's a real mindf*ck when your parents tell you that if they had known then what the country would be heading towards now, they wouldn't have had children either.

@@TreayomIn isolation lower birth rates can definitely lead to that kind of problem (especially in poorer or unattractive countries like Russia), but the easy solution that neither Japan or SK are doing is to streamline immigration to let more people settle in the country. Plenty of people are clearly willing to come here, and receiving countries actually get an unfair advantage since it’s disproportionately working-age people whose childcare and educational costs were already paid in their home country. (The situations that push so many talented people from developing countries into rich ones are a huge problem in the first place, but that’s hardly the concern behind anti-immigration politics here.)

The weird thing is that not giving a tax credit disincentivizes work a bit too. Cuz without the help your entire paycheck goes into childcare, and you basically work to have someone else raise your kid… and so, as many families do, you try to make it by by having one parent stay home (quit their job or take way less work, part time jobs or just side hussles) because this way even though you make less money you at least get to be with your child.
