- Hi everyone, thank you for 12 minutes of your time. In this video Is Lenovo Idea Pad 100 with Intel i5 5200U 8GB RAM, NVidia 920MX, and 240GB SSD ( 1TB mechanical disk before ). I received this laptop in bad condition, broken case, and freezing. The freezing is due to bad CD ROM, without CD ROM the laptop is working just fine. Game in this video Serious Sam 4. The laptop was out of use because of "high repair cost" ( changing the whole housing ). But there is an alternative way, some work, some glue, and some other cheap stuff.

It is good to see Andrew's calm and meticulous approach applied to a cheap end laptop because so many of these are just dumped when they go wrong yet can be repaired and do the job they were designed for. Rivals in the price bracket are troublesome to repair and most repair shops will not take them on.
Andrew points out the lower than usual standard of Lenovo plastic here and that 'cheaping out' tendency spread to the T and X series after about 2016, especially in the fixing tabs so always take care and use some easing oil before unclipping with a spudger.
Another Lenovo 'cheap-out' from this period onward was/is in the ribbon cable clips. The old failsafe Think Pad type ones were replaced with flimsy and stiff ones which break easily. They are nearly as bad as HP ones even on 'flagship' models.
The DVD drive is generic and easy to fix using a spare from an old computer and, for school purposes or photo storage, optical is a medium which will return using higher density DVD/CD which Sony has been supplying to industry and the medical profession in recent years.
On the other hand, the caddy Andrew shows can be used to hold a second SSD/HDD for long term data storage if set up properly so that basic resources are not used until called upon.
This is a low-ish spec CPU and the opportunity was missed by Lenovo to use 2 RAM slots which would enable dual channel instead of the single it has.
The single speaker is, of course, a disgrace yet the sound card is very good so outputting to headphones or powered speakers can be very pleasing.
The paucity of USB ports is equally mean minded of Lenovo when there is actually plenty of room but why the power connector was placed where it is remains a Chinese mystery!
That paper clip repair was very clever! Nice job Andrew! Those half internal/half external batteries are such a weird design.

Bit disappointing that he just left the broken/scuff marks. He usually does cool custom paint jobs (even plain black would be fine here).
Also didn't test many games considering it has Nvidia graphics.

Not bad, nice repair! Also glad to see you repair the top case, instead of buying new plastics (which is what I'd have probably done).
I also don't like the idea of just 1 RAM slot, there were some space for chips on the board so some models might have had the option of soldered RAM + 1 stick of RAM.
Also not surprised that the CD-ROM was causing issues when shorted out, not enough power for the rest of the laptop. I would have kept the 1TB HDD and added it in as secondary disk (instead of CD-ROM), unless the SATA port itself was bad.
The community needs more people like you who takes time to fix stuff and reuse instead of throwing away. I would really see you put together a MSI GF63 thin laptop. It hurts to see those plastic clips break every time i open that laptop. If there is only a way to open it without breaking those plastic clips.

This brought back some memories because my first laptop and the one I used throughout my teenage years was also a Lenovo IdeaPad 100-15, mine had the i3-5005U though and the same graphics card, only god knows how many games I played on it and the little dude is still "alive", I keep it in a drawer and haven't powered it on in some years. But the last time it was working, a bit slow, but working :)

Just so u know the cooling fan is only taped onto the cooler by a piece tape called Acetate cloth. U can rip it off and replace it, the tape probably caked in dirt too anyway.
Yes that's correct but I meant to the metal cover over the fan blades, that is fixed and no screws to be foremoved

One masterpiece of a video once again i'm only wondering for how long the frame wil remain solid after repair.
Next time use a lighter instead of candle to heat up the paper clip because if you use the candle the paper clip gets covered in soot and it won't stick to the 2 part epoxy.

The video is excellent.
But LENOVO is a big disappointment...
Everything is soldered on the board + only one memory slot
Plastic is cheap and of poor quality.
Let's be clear, all this works, but you need to have a little feeling for the technique.
When it breaks - the repair is not worth it unless you have a brother or friend, so rebaling the processor.
The only thing left is to replace the entire motherboard.
One idea, what do you think about making a couple of videos where you give life to relatively old hardware again?
But not with windows but with linux and to show that it really works.

Many Ideapads are cheap rubbish.
I repair and collect old IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads, most of those are great machines.
My IT guy at work gave me three Ideapad G50 machines and to Ideapad Y480 machines when an office customer demo suite was closed - the Y480 machines aren't too bad, they have quite a bit of weight to them (but still not as good as Thinkpads) but the G50 machines are similar to machine in this video and are just awful machines. Nothing good to say about them, even the keyboard is completer crap.

I hate these IdeaPads. Cheap build quality, low end hardware, very few upgrade options/many components soldered to the board (eMMC storage, RAM), etc. And for that they're overpriced. Just buy a refurbished business laptop (i.e. HP ProBook/EliteBook or a Lenovo ThinkPad). Better quality, better upgrade options, better hardware, reduces e-waste.
