How to Cultivate the Holy Spirit's Companionship - A. W. Tozer Sermon
    A.W. Tozer playlist: • A. W. Tozer Sermons
If you have read or heard classic "deeper life" Christian authors and/or preachers, i.e. Watchman Nee, Andrew Murray, A.B. Simpson, Leonard Ravenhill, then you will quite likely find this sermon by A.W. Tozer very edifying. May you be blessed.
Hailing from a tiny farming community in western Pennsylvania, his conversion was as a teenager in Akron, Ohio. While on his way home from work at a tire company, he overheard a street preacher say: "If you don't know how to be saved... just call on God." Upon returning home, he climbed into the attic and heeded the preachers advice.
In 1919, five years after his conversion, and without formal theological training, Tozer accepted an offer to pastor his first church. This began 44 years of ministry, associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), a Protestant evangelical denomination; 33 of those years were served as a pastor in a number of churches. His first pastorate was in a small storefront church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia. Tozer also served as pastor for 30 years at Southside Alliance Church, in Chicago (1928 to 1959), and the final years of his life were spent as pastor of Avenue Road Church, in Toronto, Canada. In observing contemporary Christian living, he felt that the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with "worldly" concerns.
In 1950, Tozer received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Wheaton College. It was May 1950, when Tozer was elected editor of the Alliance Weekly magazine, now called, Alliance Life, the official publication of the C&MA. From his first editorial, dated June 3, 1950, he wrote, "It will cost something to walk slow in the parade of the ages, while excited men of time rush about confusing motion with progress. But it will pay in the long run and the true Christian is not much interested in anything short of that." In 1952, he received an LL.D. degree from Houghton College.
Among the more than 40 books that he authored, at least two are regarded as Christian classics: The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. His books impress on the reader the possibility and necessity for a deeper relationship with God.
Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those who were in need.
Tozer had seven children, six boys and one girl. He was buried in Ellet Cemetery, Akron, Ohio, with a simple epitaph marking his grave: "A. W. Tozer - A Man of God."
Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer. "His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life," comments his biographer, James L. Snyder, in the book, In Pursuit of God: The Life Of A.W. Tozer. "He had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them," writes Snyder.

It is 2020 and the days are short. Time to be serious about things of the Lord which is all that matters. NC churches are still closed, but we have a small prayer group to sing worship songs, pray, share a scripture. This may be what is to come.

My goodness how different is the preaching today. I understand we learn new things today. But the men like A.W. are needed today it saddens me how we have changed. God will never changed but we do. The Holy Spirit is so real 🙏 today we disregard the Spirit of God. Jesus is so awesome! Now I understand why some young men and women listen to dead old men. May I never forget!

I have read and studied A. W. Tozer since I was 33 years old. At this time in my life it touches me more then ever. As a woman of the Lord I feel so privileged to come across this Jewel of the Holy Spirit message. To relax in Him, the Lord guides. What a peace that surpassess all understanding. Doing much, is being less, being loved by our Lord is the best place to be. Thank you Holy Father.
I remember feeling hurt because working much I was wondering why no one took pictures. It was because I was busy about His work. I will stop wondering. Praise Him.
Thankful for this message Jesus. Be with me to continue working for You.

I felt the same way when I discovered Tozer. Practical, Godly preaching is rare in every generation. It is amazing how relevant his examples of 'types' of believers still are today. It really is true that nothing really changes, thankfully the Word of God is constant because the old lies and deceits simply change clothes and constantly reappear to snare the unwary in every generation. Hope you've learned lots since discovering this marvelous preaching.

Tozer nails the heart of it every time, laying bare what needs to be burnt away like dross if we are to follow God and to live a Holy life and not just desire a comfortable, social religion that enriches our life.
I like to recap so when I want to review the message again, I have some of the nuggets here."We are like a man who owns a property, a little poor scrubby field, and he works it year in and year out, and get barely enough to keep alive out of this little field." "He disregards or maybe he never knew it, that, underneath his little farm is oil." "If he would only knew it he could have riches that put him on the finest avenue, and let him drive a cadillac, and live infinest section of any city, and own property in florida, but he is satisfied to live on a grubby little farm that doesn't produce. "Christians are like that today."
" If only we knew it and dug down a little we would have fountains of holy oil flowing that would enrich our lives and would change everything." "Instead of being christians in poverty, we would be christians with the very riches of God." One mistake we make is to think that one experience with the Holy Spirit is enough. I can know him better every day of to the end of my life. "The Holy Spirit cannot be known in one encounter, he must be cultivated."
"Many are not ready to cultivate the Holy Spirit." "You must give up the all for the ALL, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit." "You aren't willing to give up all things for all of God." "The world is full of plurality." We fall in love with these things. The Holy Spirit is bringing us to a singularity, this one We think we can have a little bit of earth and a little bit of heaven. "
That is why they never strike oil, because they are willing to have a little bit of heaven and a little bit of earth but they are unwilling to give up all to have the All." They accept Christ as an insurance policy." They are willing to change our lives, but just a little bit." We look to the church for it's social value, a social center. "
    "
"Many are not christians in the fine sense of the word. They are more influenced by hollywood then jerusalem, in their language." "They never let God do anything with them. They have never let God change them. They have never let any transformation take place." "We are left with a little bit of God, but not much of God and not much of scripture."
" We want a thrill, American people want a thrill. They want the Holy Spirit and religion for the thrill of it. Heavenly Olveteen, a pick up drink. It works to ways, religion is about the same thing. Heavenly Olveteen, Sent down to pick us up when we are down and put us down when we are up." "You want the thrill of it but not the Holiness of it." "You want the joy of it but not the duty of it."
"Can two walk together unless they agree? No. They have to have major points of agreement. If they are going to walk together they have to agree on destination, route, direction, and if it is to our advantage to walk together and if they want to go together. . We have to agree on one route. " We cannot walk with the Holy Spirit unless we are going to walk the way he walks and go the way he wants to go." the spirit filled way must be a holy way. There are those with no intention of cleaning up their lives. They are interested in the spirit. But they are not interested in a HOLY SPIRIT. They want the thrill of the Holy spirit, a thrill, but they don't want holiness. "
" The spirit filled life, must be a Holy life, for the spirit of the Lord is sensitive and he is not going to dwell in an unholy life, a life that loves sin". "He does not' require a holy place to come in, but her requires that that place should be holy after he comes in. He makes the place he is glorious where he dwells. Wherever he lights down, he makes the heart glorious. "The Spirit of God came to man to make him holy and make him able to witness." "You can only be filled with the spirit if you are willing to be no body, unheard of unknown, walking in the quiet backways of the world, in the shadow of great men." "They get the praise and you get overlooked. For the very desire to be great cancels out all the work of God and flesh if he is going to make a man holy."
"The greatest gift of the whole wide world is a meek and docile heart. A meek and quiet heart, which is in the sight of God a great price." The Holy one begins to break the colt, after awhile the whole nature of the animal changes. "IF two are to walk together, there must be a oneness that comes from the spirit of God."
"To Cultivate the acquaintance of the Holy Spirit means I must be willing to be one with him." Cultivate the Holy Spirit's acquaintance by walking with him, surrendering to him. " "When we decide to walk together, what a difference it makes." "Evangelical christianity is on the way out." there is often there no more spirituality there then there is at a meeting at the high school." "We hold to our doctrine and are going to pieces in our living and our message, and our objectives, and unless God can get a few people filled with the Holy Ghost and create a revival again." "What are we going to leave to our children?"
" If we live any amount of time and the Lord tarries. This is a most serious question." "Unless you younger people are willing to pay the price they paid and live the way they lived, and be as reckless and daring as they were, and as attached to the person of Jesus in exclusive radical attachment, we are going to leave a full shooty church to our children."

We spend so much time working a poor field for a few tomatoes, when the whole time, oil that would make you rich is underground. Most believers never dig for the oil. Why? You must give up all for the ALL (God the Holy Spirit). We like the world and are satisfied by it, so we settle for an insurance policy from Jesus. Some want the Holy Spirit for its peace or thrill. Amos 3:3-Can two walk together unless they agree?-they must agree. They must agree on direction, pace, destination, path, we have to agree that it’s an advantage to be together.-The way of the Spirit, is a Holy Way-Most don’t want to clean up there life, the Holy Spirit will not dwell in a unholy life. He makes the place of His feet glorious. The Holy Spirit never came to a man to make him famous, celebrity popular, or the next Billy Graham, but a Holy Witness. You can only be filled with the Holy Spirit if you want to be a nobody. The Holy Spirit wants to make you Meek (power under control-a strong horse that has been tamed, under control of the Holy Spirit.). You must become One with the Holy Spirit-One mind, One outlook, One Voice-Harmony-we must begin to cultivate a desire what the Holy Spirit desires. Surrender and desire friendship with Holy Spirit. Jesus we ask for a pure desire to surrender to the Holy Spirit-to give up the all, for the ALL. To walk with you, talk with you, be one mind with Holy Spirit.
