*Inspector Calls Quotes + Power and Conflict Quotes + Basic info*
    *Inspector Calls:*
"A man has to make his own way- has to look after himself and his family" - Mr Birling. This quotes establishes Mr Birlings beliefs and opinions, showing him to be a capitalist and someone who only cares about himself- then his family, but none else. This tells us, the audience that Mr Birling is a binary opposite to the Inspector (who acts as Priestley's mouthpiece) who promotes the idea that we have responsibility to look after each other. He says "We are members of one body", "Public men, mr Birling have responsibilities as well as privileges".
"You not only knew her, but you knew her well"- Sheila. This is interesting, as we the audience realise the similarities between Eric and Gerald, they both go to the palace bar in order to exploit women, but while Eric, who is completely unflattering and lazy, is frowed upon, while Gerald, a charismatic, upper class man, manages to come across as respectable. While Eric says "A state where a chap turns nasty", Gerald is respectable. However, due to his class he avoids responsibility, Priestley is criticising how the upper classes are able to get away with manipulating and using the lower classes due to their power and authority.
"Unsinkable, absolutely Unsinkable"- Mr Birling. Dramatic irony, a post war audience will be aware of the titanic and what happened. The titanic acts as a metaphor for capitalism, and how everyone sees it as being "Unsinkable", but it inevitability fails. Mr Birling stating his pride and absolute belief that the titanic will not sink, is him reinforcing his belief in capitalism, and how he believes it will sail, and will be successful, despite that not being true.
"I did nothing I'm ashamed of"- Mrs Birling. Mrs Birling is reinforcing her belief that she, an upper class women, was not in the wrong when rejecting a suffering, lower class women who carried her grandchild. It's made clear that Mrs Birling is not working at the charity in order to help people, but for the status it brings, it makes her SEEM respectable. She only feels slightly sorry when she learns it was her grandchild who died...
"We don't live alone, we are all members of one body"- The Inspector. He is pushing forward the idea of socialism, he is essentially saying that we are all responsible for each other, and that socialism is the way to go in order to improve society. This is backed up in the same speach when he says "Fire, blood and anguish" which shows us that if we dont change, we will only repeat history with WW1 and 2, and it will only lead to death and destruction.
"Hard Headed man of business"- Mr Birling. Establishes his nature as a selfish, self centered businessman that Priestley aims to criticise.
"Nobody wants war"-Mr Birling. More dramatic irony, it shows his lack of social understanding and how he doesn't truly understand what is going on. Mr Birling doesn't care enough, as he is too stubborn and arrogant to consider the possibility that his belief in capitalism will fail.
"Girls of that class"- Mrs Birling, shows her disregard for the lower classes, believing herself to be above them. She shows us how she doesn't really care about the lower classes, which is evident with the derogatory language. She also assumes that all the working class care about is money, which while it is something they need, she is surprised that the working classes would refuse money. She also shows a lack of social understanding here.
"Why shouldn't they try for higher wages"- (I'm not 100% but I'm 99% sure that this is Sheila), criticism of Mr Birling, she criticises the mistreatment of the working classes, and realises the injustice behind the underpayment of the working class. Sheila begins to see the truth behind capitalism and when the inspector leaves, she becomes the new voice of priestly and the working class.
*Poems (Brief overview + a few quotes -unexplained-)*

I have an interpretation, the idea of "sharp" also connotates the idea of cutting something, and when you cut something you are precise with it. This ideology links to Inspector Goole as a character where he is precise, he knows what to say at given moments and appears as a trained inspector, in which Priestley uses the inspector as a mouthpiece to display how his message has been thought out for a given duration, he has had experience and perhaps uses this opportunity to spread his proto-socialistic ideas.
Not sure if this is a reach but here's an interpretation I just thought of for after tomorrow if necessary.

Thank you so much, it really helped me to go back through this play slowly. This allowed me to apply my knowledge and remember new things. I would also recommend making notes as you watch and pause/rewind sections to help set it in your brain. You can also refer back to your notes. It's Amazing how much I always learn with all of your teachings tutorials and the amount of learning with strength turns my courage into me learning being more confident in so many different areas of learning , like , after each learnings and the great ways you explain gives me more and more ways to learn with the techniques you explain ... Not enough words to explain how much I learn to better with structuring my thoughts while reading books , and how I can better explain characters interaction with each other ; one of my most difficult but learning how to do better with each video and plus I read books to better structure how to do that too but again I learn so much more than what I say
I am just so happy to learn in ways to strengthen my many of books I have to read as required books and I then implement as much structural writing in-between each task along with the literary and sentence structuring that is study days in itself because I try to focus soly with those studies because it's a lot of studying and the study method techniques given in other video that gave structuring to schedule learning too which I always have and just not as structured schedule but I always study no matter the situation or circumstances because there is so much to learn for me to get better at the grades and I learn a lot from you and it might not show because my thoughts are not as structured but I try everyday
And just want to say there are not enough words to explain how you get me the better grades in so many different elements of learning for me get better grades
As always all my always and forever love you for everything you do for teaching greatness and thank you Mr English Everything for all you do for me learning how to be greater with learning and especially me reading books 📚 and how to structure thoughts as I continue and always try with the greatest teachings , Thank you so very much with the greatest of appreciation !
I learn so much and with each learning my English studies get more and more structure even thou it might seems as if it's just not but it IS ... especially my reading of books with writing ...again Thank Mr English Everything !

From a fellow English teacher's perspective, AIC is one of the more nicer and easier texts to teach at KS4 level and it clicks with the students easily, as everything is so straight forward and for AO2 there isn't even really many language techniques so it's all zoom in, zoom in, zoom in. But it also lends itself to the students making their own inferences. It's the perfect balance of being accessible but giving students the freedom to read between the lines and write about the effect on the reader in great detail.
Now Jekyll and Hyde on the other hand. Good lord, which bright spark decided to put that on the GCSE spec?

hello, i have an interpretation of the text, an inspector calls. so you know when the inspector arrives and the stage directions say that the lighting has become 'brighter and harder' . its kind of like a biblical allusion as angel gabriel came to visit mary, the same way the inspector is coming to the birling's to deliver a message from priestley (the voice of god). when the inspector came to visit the birlings , the lighting has become brighter and harder- when something is extremely bright, it may be blinding, which may also foreshadow how the older generation are giving a blind eye to social responsibility- linking to their refusal resistance to change due to their archaic , traditional ways

    to all studying inspector calls:
you killed her - damn you- damn you (ao2 fragmented speech and repetition of damn you creating a sense of aggression and tension between eric and sybil) ao3 (yap abt younger generation vs older generation and how socialism links to this)
she looked young and fresh ( gerald says this a02 semantic field of meat and animals aka zoomorphism showing objectifying of women) ao3(suggests how even gerald is a slave to capitalism as he cant marry whom he wants to but the wealthy)
unsinkable absolutely unsinkable (ao2 repetition emphasising birlings views plus dramatic irony) ao3 ( 1945 viewers know the titanic has sunk so birlings yapping)
if men do not learn that lesson they shall be taught it in fire and blood and anguish (ao2 polysyndeton means repetition of conjugations such as 'and' so the consequences are emphasised also creates a semantic field of hell.) ao3 (link it to how the inspector is always 'cutting in" so he cooks capitalism)
clothes mean something quite different to a women (ao2 is a euphemism which means an expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.) ao3 (this shows how women are forced to hide their opinions due to expectations. it also suggests that women are respected by their clothes which suggests how they are victims to capitalism.)
it was a hellish thing to see- oh my god (ao2 juxtaposition between hellish and god suggests the extent to which the rape has cooked eric. The fragmented speech emphasises this. this is also a euphemism)
