Promised land is my favourite house track from back in the day and over 40 years just found out Paul Weller covered it. Not a bad job tbh. One of my mates tried to claim M people wrote Ce Ce Rogers Someday. :D
@@collapsiblechair9112 He was right, House Music was the R&B sound of that time but it didn't suit the band at all... he would embrace the Acid Jazz scene in 1990 on his solo career, a more coherent path.
the record company would not let paul weller release one album dance music orientated like the stone roses and happy Mondays this was the end of the band.
... that's sad to hear. It's documented that Paul loved 'dance music' too and felt he was restricted by the 'powers that be' to steer clear from the genre. Was extremely pleased when he and the group recorded and released this version of the classic. It has the 'Weller groove' all over it, even though it nods respectively to 'Joe Smooth's' original. "Excellent Work" Style Council.
I'm a Weller fanatic but "Modernism" was a bad album, the label was right... it didn't had the nuance and balance between acid house and rock that records by the Stone Roses or Happy Mondays had... I think Weller was trying to do a concept album like "Screamadelica", 808 State's debut or his own "Confessions of a Pop Group" and didn't quite got there... The peak of TSC's electronic experimentation for me was "Soul Deep" and its remixes, that track is flawless! Weller is a genius and he was right: house music was the natural evolution of R&B at that time. His first solo album pointed it out to another future of R&B: the Acid Jazz.
Paul you did Joe a good turn in bringing this to the masses but you murdered it mate. Saying that I always saw the style Council as very hit and miss. You could go from it's a very deep sea to the lodgers.. that's some genius to garbage madness right there
Weller was musically and politically lost at that time. He rationalized too much on the concept of House Music and it sounded fake. He also started to get frustrated with the Worker's Party, Billy Bragg and the gang... so lyrics started to suffer also. When TSC was fired from the label Weller lost it completely. He returned to his hometown and started all over again, musically and politically clean.
@Christopher Christos so- called don of indie rock in the uk, making a shit version of pure gold just to get something in the charts and the $$$ rolling in.
@@gazziboyNo one calls Weller the don of indie rock ! Weller has been influenced by Soul,Ska,Pop,Rock etc and done covers of music he respects from forever . Gotta have House music....all night long. That sweet spot between eighties pop and rave..best candy flipping parties ever !! 💫

Weller was a big house head.
You hear this, you think, Ooooh that's great...Then you hear Joe Smooths and it's just perfecttion.
Still, well done Weller, not bad kid.
Original is better imo but either way it’s good that this message is being spread

He was uniterested on copy The Who and wisely, disbanded The Jam to make actual black music(The Who was, even in those days, old black music,r'n'b)
I like the Council circa 82-85, but they were dry of ideas by promised land and started stealing from American house music
never stole ,paid homage more like
Yeah by this point the creativity had gone.

Doesn't live up to the original but nice try.
Why is SC's music so different from that of the Jam's or Paul Weller's? Cause SC ripped off other artists.
Richard Head the style council was more about weller examing the soul boy side of him.
