The green in the Portuguese flag represents hope, since "green is The colour of hope" (at least its what they told us at school) and the red represents the blood of all the Portuguese heroes that died during the battles that Portugal had during his rising. 🇵🇹 Great video BTW. Also, the reason for dropping blue and making such a sudden change was because the monarchy was abolished and blue was the royal color. Also the crown was dropped for the same reason.

Okay, there are plenty of reasons as to why Portugal no longer uses the old white and blue flag, but for the sake of simplicity, I'll point out the two obvious ones:
1. Portugal is no longer a monarchy; king Carlos and his eldest son, Luís, were assassinated on 1st of February 1908, while the Royal family was passing by Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon, which led to the youngest, Manuel II, taking charge.
2. The green and red are the colors of the republican party, whose leaders eventually overthrew the monarchy, in 5th of October 1910, forcing Maunel II and his mother, Maria, to flee to the United Kingdom and ending his short-lived two-year rule as the last monarch of Portugal; this would end up only being another phase of the huge political, social and economic instability that the country had been suffering over the last few decades and which would worsen even more in the following ones.
If Portugal were to ever bring back the old white and blue flag, the monarchist party would have to win the elections, but it's very unlikely it will ever happen.
Those sound like very silly and kinda...bad reasons? For one, plenty of countries brought back monarchist symbols despite not being monarchies. Such as Serbia, Russia, Montenegro, Bulgaria etc.
Secondly, is having a flag with the colors of the Portugese Republican Party any better than having the colors of the Monarchy given...well, uh...let's just say 'rough' state of the First Portugese Republic?
But we could have just taken the crown of the flag. White and blue is prettier and would make more sense
@@marvelfannumber1 Well, regarding symbols, the only things that really changed were the colors and the crown, the latter of which was obviously removed. The current flag still holds the coat of arms, along with new armillary sphere.
And, for second, no;. It's not really any better, specially considering there was even an attempt to restore the monarchy in Porto, the second most important city, in 1919.

@@shiatali_313 Brasília (the Brazilian capital) was a planned city buit in the 1950's, it's contruction started during the government of president Juscelino Kubitscheck (JK for short), who was also responsible for highways being the prefered transportation system in Brazil up to today (despite being the less apropriate), because he figured out that if we built many highways, the international automobile industry would see it as an opportunity and build fabrics here

I noticed that about the US, they like putting the Australian flag in so many random places. I think it's because they don't like the British. But Australia is more like a younger brother that they do like.
We also like how it looks more. The British are stereotypically seen as snobbish so an American with a British flag might unwantingly give off that notion and the Australian stereotype of laid back and chill is a much more desirable vibe to give off. But it's mainly because we think it's pretty with the red and white star constellations.
Naw, We love the British. I saw a couple Union Jacks flown in the weeks after Elizabeth's death.
@@jaykaufman9782 The royal family is different imo. We don't have royalty of our own and I wasn't trying to argue that a majority of Americans don't like the British but the Australian flag, here in Texas at least, is more common. We have a general positive opinion on most western countries.

In case anyone was wondering, the reason why London didn't have a flag between 1986 and 2001 is because the city lacked a single local government/council during that period.
The Greater London Council was formed in 1965 but abolished in 1986 due to a combination of being perceived as a ineffective/a waste of money (sometimes fairly, sometimes unfairly) and party politics (the GLC was run by the "loony-left", while Margaret Thatcher was the UK's Prime Minister). In 2001, the Greater London Assembly was established which served a similar purpose but has far greater budgetary restraints and also a new flag.

So, Portugal in 1910 had a civil war between republicans and monarchists, the palace of the king was bombarded by the ship ''Lusitania'', causing the overthrowing and exile of the king, ending the monarchy forever. Portugal decided NOT to ''show their old colors'', so a flag change was needed, if you do want to see a flag like this, check out the flag of the Porto football team flag.

Hello, Mate. Nice Video so far. Just a little mistake in here: the second German flag with the German eagle at 10:54 is not the one of the Holy Roman Empire, it's the Bundesdienstflagge, which is used by state officials like the Kanzler or by the Bundeswehr (German Army). :)

As a Portuguese, I think the "new" flag is ugly (in my opinion), not only stetically (doesn't follow heraldry, because you can put two colours like that next to each other), but also symbolically. Green and red where never the the colours used to represent Portugal. In 1910 a coup change the regime to republic and they for some reason decided to use the colours of the Carbonari, shady organization that wanted a union between Portugal and Spain. So basically the current flag represents Portugal as a Spanish province.

@@TheBoyer19 It only started representing monarchy after the Liberal revolution of Porto, it was established as a national colour in 1821 and later set in a flag after the Liberals won the Portuguese civil war. The blue stripe was added as a breakaway from the traditional Portuguese absolute monarchy.
The colour blue itself is said to represent the vests of the Patroness of Portugal, a Imaculada Conceição, but that's debatable to some extent.
