This Camera Made Me Convert to Sony | A7C II First Impressions

  • The new Sony A7C II is a compact mirrorless, full frame camera that will be replacing my current workhorse camera. With its small form factor, light weight magnesium alloy body, impressive AI based autofocus, improved menu system, improved color science, and of course Sony's notoriously good low light capability, this camera fills almost every need I have as a videographer and photographer.
A few things that I don't immediately love after spending a few weeks with the camera- the battery life isn't great. It lasts about 3 hours while shooting video. Additionally, I think the audio quality is maybe slightly worse than my old camera, but it's hard to tell. And finally, the monitor brightness and resolution is also a slight downgrade to what I'm used to. However, I'm willing to make those sacrifices in order to get a camera that is improved in all those other ways from my last camera.
What do you think about the Sony A7Cii? Let me know!

Since this video is only my first impressions, I'll use this comment to update any of my opinions about the camera as I continue to use it...
Update: My number 1 complaint after a month more of experience with the camera is that the EVF and monitor are both not bright enough for sunny outdoor use. It's oftentimes hard to see if my shots are in focus, and glare becomes a big issue for seeing the screens at all. I've resorted to using an external monitor for all my outdoor shooting to solve the problem. Not the end of the world, but worth mentioning.

I'm planning to upgrade my A7III to A7CII after all these years, I think A7C2 is quite compact and also good for stabilisers than A74 or A7S3, that 200g makes a game changer, but the cons of A7C2 is just like the A74, the 4K50p cropped, but I hope there will be A75 coming next year and will rewrite this cons afterwards, but meanwhile APS-C lens on 4K50 can solve those problems, and TBH 3hrs battery life wasn't short already...I usual bring 2 battery out with me to the field, normally i=they won't exhausted even I use all day long, unless I keep rolling non stop...but if that's the situation, I will use V-Mount instead.

Color is a personal opinion. I have a7c and like the colors. I have no issues with the menu because i customize my own menu and use 1,2,3 for video only 24/60/120fps. I keep the other for photo settings. I was new to Sony and have no problems to find what i want in the menu.

From what I've learned, the new MarkII version doesnt lose quality because its downsampling to get even better 4K footage since its at 6K? The latest processor in the MarkII allows this to happen.

I own the Sony A7IV, A7CII, and A7RV cameras, and I can accomplish almost anything with any of them. When using the A7CII with a lens like the 35mm GM, the ergonomics are not ideal for one-handed operation, and the camera feels slightly unbalanced. However, it works perfectly with smaller lenses such as the 24mm, 40mm, 50mm G, or the 28-60mm pancake lens.

    I want a zoom lens, preferably g quality, ( can't afford gm) looking for a 14- 35- 16-50 but nothing like that exists, only a zeiss 16-55 but that's an F4, want a 2.8 at least.

I just bought the MarkII camera and while shopping for lenses (this is my 1st Sony) I found Sigma has some new ART lenses available designed specifically for mirrorless. Also, Tony Northrup did a nice segment on his channel regarding the new mirrorless designs and how theyre smaller and faster...all of which are less expensive than the Sony and equal to the GM line. I do a lot of events and found the 18mm to be prime for events so just found a 19mm Sigma for this Sony and adding a new 50mm f1.4 for everything else such as portraits, headshots, etc.

I thought to get A7CR line as my first camera but then I realised it make not much sense if you just want a single camera to do it all to get something in between an actual pocketable like RX100 lineup and full size A7 or other brand of camera, you don't get proper handling hardware with big EVF and screen yet you still need a bag and hang on neck to carry. A7RV is not much bigger than A7C, it is just like A7C but with a permanent big EVF on top, and it come with the one and only 4 ways tilt screen too, hence I will get that and 70-200mm F4 MACRO OSS G II with 2X tele converter, 16-35mm F4 PZ and one more cheap F0.95 lens, this make more sense to me if I want a single dedicated camera to jump from shooting with smartphones, before that I thought about RX100, RX10, A7C, D Lux 7, X100V and so on, I do prefer Hasselblad's Scandinavian haze art paint color science tho, Sony looks digital slight cooler tone especially the Zeiss glasses days, Panasonic looks good but it does has an electronic Gray look, Fuji looks too moody and its users like to make the shadow really dark, Olympus looks well balanced, Leica was look nice to me but realised it's not natural but Kodak warm film look and it also remind me how iPhone try to mimic too, Nikon seem nice and Canon seem good too.

Hey bud, interesting video. I personally went for the Panasonic S5II. It benefits from a new PDAF auto-focus system, active cooling sytem, 6k open-gate, better IBIS, more video-centric monitoring tools like 180 degree shutter, spot metering and vector scopes, full-sized HDMI out, focus stacking and bracketting etc All and a much lower price than both the A7CII and A7IV, not to mention the in tests, Slanted lens found that the ISO performance and low-light was considerably better on the S5II too. It's a much smaller and lighter camera than the S1H and their set of f1.8 primes are all the same size making gimbal work much easier.

    • @ScreenFiends
      @ScreenFiends Před 9 měsíci

@limagepicture9023 There's not as many lenses. I'll grant that, but realistically how many lenses do you plan on getting? There are third party anamorphic lenses available for Panasonic and up until recently only Panasonic offered anamorphic desqueeze in camera. As far as I'm aware they are also currently the only company with dedicated IBIS specic for the anamorphic modes. As far as lenses go, there's everything you would realistically need, granted Sony currently has a vast array to choose from.

With the smaller body you have the option of using smaller primes for a small kit, while adding the bigger zoom for other needs. Best of both worlds. As he mentioned, you can make the body larger as you might need or add a cage. But you can never make a larger body smaller. To me it’s nice to have flexibility.

@@007UA16 IF Sony makes a remake of the A7CII/A7CR cameras with large EVF and more resolution of the EVF plus a joystick, I will buy one of those or both. I do not like any zoom big or small, I think that big zoom lenses are the most stupid think to use. By the way, the A7CII is too thick with the fully articulating screen and it is not much smaller or lighter than the rest of the Sony family of cameras.

Sigma re-designed some of their ART lenses for mirrorless bodies and now theyre slightly shorter, better balanced for the small bodies. The benefit of going smaller is you can trim it down for street shooting with small prime lenses, or add a cage and strap on large zooms. Also, the smaller form factor helps in video.

One popular zoom that I know videographers use (a good friend of mine is a pro !) is the Sony 24-105mm 4.0 G OSS (663g), the comparable Sigma 24-105mm 4.0 DG OS HSM Art (885g) is heavier. I will guess that Lenses heavier than 600-700g for handheld video making will be a bit too heavy.
