      I was flushed from the womb in the year 1980. You just made me happy and sad. I miss my childhood arcade memories. This game, X-Men (6 player dual screen cabinet was the best!), The Simpsons and there's others that I can't recall right now, but for 4 player fun, they were practically the only games that offered that at the time -- even being some of the few and rare 4 player games at that time. Konami and Capcom were just the best...Daddy Pig is very upset. 😭 (Jk.... Kinda)

    It's amazing how well this game holds up after nearly 30 years. I credit it to great art direction; crisp, clear sprites/backgrounds and smooth animation, as well as the little humorous touches.

    • @Zaxares
      @Zaxares Před 4 lety +1

      @Flatulence Pile Well, of COURSE if you look at a modern PS4 game like Spider-Man or Final Fantasy VII Remake (both of which I played and I think are amazing, btw), their quality is going to be leagues ahead of an arcade game released in 1989. But if you compare this game to, say, games from the PS1 generation, this game has aged a LOT better than those blocky, early gen 3D graphics. I can't replay stuff like the first Crash Bandicoot without wincing at how awful those graphics look nowadays. You don't really get that same feeling with games like TMNT.

  • @susanfit47
    @susanfit47 Před 3 lety +11

    This arcade game of TMNT, is based on the comic book and animated series of the same name that began 2 years earlier, being released during the show's 3rd season. This game was the same design that was later reused and converted what would become succedded into Punk Shot, The Simpsons, Vendetta, Sunset Riders, the second TMNT game Turtles in Time, X-Men, G.I. Joe, Bucky O'Hare, Mystic Warriors: Wrath of the Ninjas, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, Martial Champion, Metamorphic Force, Violent Storm, and Run and Gun: B-Ball Show Time cabinets.
    It was the success of this game that led to Konami many licensed in the early/mid 90's. The amazing success of the game led to Konami got the rights to many American (and some European) cartoons, TV shows, movies and comic books for home and arcade video games with a quality so good that sometimes shadowed the original work Konami later acquiring Aliens, the previously acquired Top Gun, and The Goonies, Mission: Impossible, Rollergames, The Simpsons, The Lone Ranger, Tiny Toon Adventures, Bucky O'Hare, Monster in My Pocket, Star Trek, X-Men, G.I. Joe, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, Batman Returns, Batman: The Animated Series, The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Animaniacs, Biker Mice From Mars, and French comic Asterix, and many more in order to capture as many of the red hot properties to create a video game tie in for. The arcade hardware board System 16, which TMNT was based on, would be used to create many of the games such as Super Contra (1988), Gang Busters (1988), Devastators (1988), The Main Event (1988), Thunder Cross (1988), Block Hole (1989), Crime Fighters (1989), Gradius III (1989), M.I.A.: Mission in Action (1989), Quarth (1989), S.P.Y.: Special Project Y (1989), Aliens (1990), Punk Shot (1990), and Thunder Cross II (1991) and the engine which TMNT was also based on for these various franchises such as The Simpsons, X-Men, Bucky O'Hare, and Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, and as mentioned, TMNT would return to once again kick some shell in the arcades a few 2 years later on (which for the SNES port, listed it as the 4th game in the series, after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Manhattan Project). Over the course of the next 4 years, they would adapt and reuse the TMNT game engine reskinned the concept game style formula, this would become the blueprint for many other successful similar later Konami 4/6 player beat 'em up games such as The Simpsons (1991), Sunset Riders (1991), the sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (1991), the X-Men (1992) (which was actually a 6-player co-op game, many were 4 player versions, some were 2 player versions), Asterix (1992), Bucky O'Hare (1992), Mystic Warriors: Wrath of the Ninjas (1993), and Metamorphic Force (1993). All were solid hits, giving further proof that the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles formula was one of the great ones.
    Setting the difficulty on the game at the maximum, and then starting a four player game will result in a screen so clogged with enemies that it is difficult to move (as the game changes the amount of enemies based on the difficulty and the number of players). This is really only fun to do if you want to see if you can make the game lag, as the game is already hard enough on factory settings. This trick works on most Konami games such as X-Men, and Bucky O’Hare.
    A modified version of the same was published by Ultra for the NES in late 1990 under the title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game, in order to avoid confusion with the previous earlier NES game based on the franchise, while at the same time, making it clear to players that it was given both a sequel number based on the arcade game. The Japanese Famicom version was titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, without a number nor a subtitle, due to the fact that first NES game was localized in Japan under a different title.
    This version includes two new levels (the first part of Scene 3 and all of Scene 6), which feature new enemy characters, 4 new music, including two new bosses created specifically for the NES port: Tora (a Polar Bear-like "blizzard beast") and Shogun (a robotic samurai). Most of the original stages from the arcade version were extended as well and the second half of Scene 3, the parking garage stage, replaces the arcade version's end battle with Bebop and Rocksteady with a battle against the mutated fly form of Baxter Stockman. The NES port appeared in Nintendo's PlayChoice-10 arcade system. This version of the game was once slated for release on the Wii Virtual Console, but was canceled.
    The NES version featured notable product placement advertising: Pizza Hut logos. The rear cover of the instruction manual provided a coupon for the restaurant, with an expiration date of December 31, 1991. The NES port is actually written as a direct sequel to the 1990 hit Turtles film.
    In 1991 Electronic Gaming Monthly published an April Fools' joke stating that after resetting the game console five times and entering a code on both controller one and controller two, players would be able to play the game as Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series.
    In 2019, the game was rereleased as a replica arcade cabinet, including Turtles in Time, as well, for home use by manufacturer Arcade1Up. The reissue is nearly identical to the original, however there are a few changes; the opening is performed by a different artist, players do not need to insert quarters to play, and Konami's name on the arcade marquee is replaced by Nickelodeon's.
    I grew up playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. I first saw this game in late 1989/early 1990 in Maryland. I haven't played this since 1999, when I lived at Fort Sam Houston, Texas at that time. This installment included a "II" in the title when released on the NES for continuity purposes on that console. The last time I played this was on November 2013 at the Coastal Carolina Fair in Ladson, South Carolina.

    There were several distinct versions of this game available in the arcade, but the 4-player dedicated cabinet was the most common by far. There were also two player versions, but they are much harder to come by. You can convert a 4-player board to the 2-player version by burning new EPROMs, but the conversion doesn't work the other way around because the 2-player board doesn't have the connectors to accomodate the extra two controllers.
    The TMNT dedicated cabinet was fairly large and had an oversized control panel (to accomodate four players). The sides were decorated with full sideart showing April O'Nial and several of the turtles in a city scene. Machines in the UK will be labeled as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, because that was the name of the turtle franchise over there. The marquee shows a city scene with all the turtles and a live action version of April O'Neil. Frankly they just should have drawn her instead of using a photograph, her hair is just awful. The control panel has a city scene similar to the one on the marquee and has four joysticks (one for each player), each of which is a different color. These machines all came equipped with 25 inch open frame monitors, although you will sometimes run into one with a different size screen, these are almost always conversions of other titles.
    Moving on to the interior of the machine, the game itself runs on a JAMMA compatible circuit board. The board itself will plug into a JAMMA wiring harness, but it has a second harness to accomodate the controls for players three and four. The games The Simpsons, Sunset Riders, and Bucky O'Hare are fully compatible with this extended harness, and will plug directly into a TMNT cabinet without modification. One thing that you may notice is that the jump and attack buttons seem backwards of what they would logically be, but you get used to it quickly.
    The game's code itself runs on a pair of processors, an 8 Mhz 68000 and a 3.58 Mhz Z80. Konami's other 4-player games from the era run such as Devastators, Gang Busters, Super Contra, The Main Event, Thunder Cross, Block Hole, Crime Fighters, Gradius III, M.I.A.: Mission in Action, Quarth, S.P.Y.: Special Project Y, Aliens, Punk Shot, Surprise Attack, Lightning Fighters, Bells and Whistles, Thunder Cross II, Rollergames, Golfing Greats, the 2nd Turtles game sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, and Premier Soccer on similar hardware, but they always changed something so people couldn't just swap EPROMs to change games. For examples, The Simpsons had the same basic mainboard, but used a 3 Mhz encrypted 68000 in place of the 8 Mhz unencrypted one that TMNT uses. Each one of the dozen or so Konami 4-player games has at least one component difference from all the others. I learned this when I was poking around to see if any TMNT mainboard could run any other games. Konami also did other 4-player cabinet games from the era, such as the previously established The Main Event (in the deluxe 25” cabinet) in 1988, Crime Fighters (also in the deluxe 25” cabinet) in 1989, Punk Shot in 1990, The Simpsons, the 2nd Turtles game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Vendetta (Crime Fighters 2), and Sunset Riders in 1991, Escape Kids, Marvel Comics’ X-Men, the run ‘n gun G.I. Joe, France’s Asterix, the beat ‘em up & run ‘n gun Bucky O’Hare in 1992, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, Mystic Warriors, Metamorphic Force and the 3-player Violent Storm (Crime Fighters 3) in 1993.

    • @neat3468

      That's not true, well not for me anyway. My 4 player JAMMA board for TMNT has the connectors but so does my Turtles in Time which is only 2 player ROM. I also had Sunset Riders 2 player and 4 player boards. Well anyway I've never seem a Konami board that didn't have the connectors for 3 or 4 players, I thought it was just the ROMs that were different.
      Sega's 16 bit board on the other board, that does has a detachable connector that doesn't exist on a 2 player board (although you can swap the connector between boards and thankfully unlike Konami's boards you can change the number of players in the game's BIOS.)

    • @Loader2K1
      @Loader2K1 Před 6 lety +1

      @Jason Clark: I actually liked the NES port more than the arcade original. Yeah, it was a serious downgrade in terms of graphics and the lack of a multiplayer option, but I felt the difficulty was significantly more balanced, and I did like the two added stages and bosses. Also, once you master the "swing attack" move, the game becomes a cake walk.
