Nissan Coilover install on a Toyota MX83 Cressida

  • We install Nissan S13 Coilovers on a Justin's MX83 Cressida. The next drift event is a week away and it's prep time.
    The tired Tein setup was good while it lasted but these Powertrix coilovers are a much needed upgrade. The Powertrix suspension on Justin's daily driven Subaru Outback has seen multiple subies over the years and they're still holding up.
    To adapt S13 Suspension to a Cressida you have to do the following:
    * Get some coilover lower mounts to weld onto the MX83 lowers (same procedure as most companies making MX83 coilovers) OR run full front S13 Suspension and use the S13 lower coilover mount.
    * Front tower holes need to be filed to fit S13 front top hats.
    * Create an adapter for the S13 tophat to fit the MX83 rear towers. We did this with OEM top hats.
    * Create an adapter sleeve for the coilover rear lower bolt OR open the knuckle to take a larger bolt that fits the hole of the S13 coilover. (Not in the video but we purchased some steel standoffs and shaved them down to fit.)

    So I see so many people using S series coils (s13 s14 240 etc) on cressidas
    Why ? They make mx83 coilovers
    We’re they just not on the market at the time ?

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 2 lety

      More low. Better roll center correction from the front knuckles. S-chassis parts are easier to find. The design of the front suspension is very similar to the X8 and people have converted the entire front suspension to S-chassis.

  • @Monstero5o
    @Monstero5o Před 4 lety +1

    How does it handle with the teins? I heard the the length in the coilover is wrong to work properly because s13 length is different to what a Cressida should be using

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 4 lety +1

      Beast60 the Teins were blown so the car didn’t ride so great. The Nissan setup is working great so far. 12/10kg springs with dampening set around the middle. The only issue with s13 length coils is you’re kind of committed to being low but even this can be worked around depending on brand/strut length.

      Powertrix doesn't make a Cressida specific set. If they did, we'd run it. Run whatever you like. Justin has been running Powertrix coilers for over 12 years and won't use anything else.

      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety

      Special order. If you order Cressida specific coilovers they'll come with the weld-on lower. If you order S13 coilovers you have to ask the manufacture if they'll sell you a weld-on lower mount.

  • @someuselessbricks2066
    @someuselessbricks2066 Před 3 lety

    I know this video is kind of old (I know only by a year) but I was thinking of doing coilovers on the Cressida and saw BC had some for it. After some research I found that BC racing coilovers need welding, but I also found out that xcessive welds them onto the spindles for you, but that makes me question whether the spindle is reusable in case my suspension blows? I don't want to do any drilling cutting or welding myself so I was wondering if I should just stick with that, or have a local shop weld adapters on the spindles and run s13 front and BC rear kind of like you have, OR just go with full s13 suspension. In your opinion which way would be easiest? The hardest part is that the Cressida is my daily. I have other cars to drive in the meantime, but would rather fix my Cressida with blown suspension first (considering I want to avoid stock suspension).

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety +1

      Majority if not all Cressida coilovers sold today require welding. If a coilover strut blows just order a new one from same brand. Not a full coilover just the strut and switch it out. We were able to find a spare set of spindles at the junkyard and so we got ours welded ahead of time before the install. Any competent fabricator if not mechanic can do this for you. Full S13 conversion requires s13 knuckles, hubs, lcas, rotors, brakes, and adjustable tension rods. It’s a lot more $$ trying to get all these parts than to just find someone to do the welding for you.

    How much of the knuckle did you have to cut before welding to get your friends height?

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety

      You cut the strut tube on the knuckle. You want to weld to the insert to the strut tube not the cast knuckle. You only need about 1 inch of the strut tube, but the shorter you cut it the lower the coilover can go into the tube. But with inverted monotube struts, the adjuster bottomed out inside of the knuckle.

    Thinking of coilovers on my Cressida was thinking of re drilling the front turret holes so the caster camber was aligned correctly any info on affects would be most welcome.Also would be handy to know if the front top hats could be used in the rear.

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety

      We eventually redrilled the fronts to align correctly so you’re good there. You’ll need rear top hats for the rear. There’s no need for camber adjustment on the rear hats.

      (For any interested) Fronts needed bearing and Vulcanised rubber pressed out and the inside of hat containiing left over rubber cleaned (2 Min Wire Wheel) 1 stud relocated to fit rear holes. Looking for Big Washer or similar that fits in the hat then weld it in and drill 2 holes. Coilovers in Transit will update Bugs or success.

      @platypussting9054 Před 2 lety

      Coilover mounting bolts position makes front hats on rear workable though not worth the effort. I instead cut the (Cone?) off the rear hats (Cut around not through deep enough when the blade slows or smell rubber burning) Removed rubber, Drilled Coilover mounting holes Used dremmel and Burr to remove the raised edge giving the coilover a flat surface to fit against. Made a doughnut shape gasket for betwen Top Hat and Coilover. Finish is nice and I feel a stronger option. No Holes still intact Hat.Worked Beautiful, Fast and Fairly Easy. Thanks for your Post helped me a lot with ideas.

    hey i just bought an 1990 toyota cressida and i have a few questions whats the way around welding the coilovers onto the cressida spindle is there a way i run parts by max s13 coilovers with a spindle like the power trix one you have.

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety +1

      The weld on tubes come off a Z31. Powertrix just happens to sell Z31 coilovers, so that's why Justin was able to get tubes instead of the standard S13 lower. I have no idea is the threaded coilover shaft is the same threading as PBM. Also I browsed PBM's website and they don't offer Z31 parts so they probably don't have the weld on tubes to sell you.

      @@RatchetFinesse oh shit so I can use z31 tubing to screw onto the end of the coilover is what it’s sounding like is that correct? the s13 coilovers will work so I’m confused if I have to use powertrix specific coilovers ?

    • @RatchetFinesse
      @RatchetFinesse  Před 3 lety +1

      @@TheRedman49 right z31 and cressida use the same type of weld on tube. I don't know if those tubes are interchangable between coilover brands. Like if you buy PBM coilovers I don't know if the powertrix/bc racing/fortune auto/stance tubes fit. Stay with the same brand and you'll have better chances that the tubes fit the coilover. Obviously this is a custom order so start sending emails to vendors and will hook you up with the right parts.

Justin has also only ran Powertrix coilovers on all his projects for the last 9 years so the choice was easy for him.
