    *Summary of Changes* (Edit)
    - Incorrectly referred AFMAN 36-2203 as "AFI 36-2203". This is now corrected.
    - Updated Army FM 3-21.5 to Army TC 3-21.5
    - Multiple spelling and grammatical errors.
    - Removed previously inaccurate critiques based on outdated and misinterpreted information.
    - Added prefix to better explain options cadets have when performing in an Air Force colors team.
Let me start off by saying this is all much needed constructive criticism, because this team is severely lacking in a lot of areas. I understand this is a year old but my impression is that a lot of the mistakes from this have carried over to this year. Let's break this down one command/sequence at a time, to make this is as educational and helpful for your team as possible. Please read through all of this and learn from it.
PREFIX: Air Force cadets are in a unique situation as the AFMAN 36-2203 doesn't detail how to perform every movement in a color guard. It has pictures of the end result of a movement, but nothing further in most cases. It instead relies on the other two service manuals to explain the finer details. This makes it a daunting task for those unfamiliar with reading the manuals to figure out the correct techniques. Why they don't update the regs to make it easier to understand, your guess is as good as mine. Another option cadets have (in a competition setting only) is to march under Army TC 3-21.5, as this is much more detailed and straight forward. The only downside is that when outside of a competition setting, you will have to march the Air Force manual anyway. Figure out what's best for your team. All of my critiques will be in accordance with the "Air Force way". Onto the critique...
    1. The correct command is Carry Colors, not Right Shoulder. "Right Shoulder, Arms" is a command in regulation drill, however in a colors team setting it is used by the Air Force Honor Guard exclusively. Cadets are not authorized to perform Honor Guard techniques in a competition. You are correct for going to the outside shoulder, however. Since the AFMAN 36-2203 doesn't explain the proper technique, you must reference MCO 5060.20. During your report in, you should be stating what manual you are drilling in accordance with. It tells your evaluators exactly what you are about to perform so they can better follow along. If you stated to me, "We will be drilling in accordance with AFMAN 36-2203" and performed that, I would have awarded you zero points for an incorrect movement. When at Carry Colors, or any shoulder in general with a rifle, your forearms need to be parallel with the marching surface, and your elbows pinned to your sides so that your rifle is at a 45 degree angle. Both guards are repeatedly inconsistent with this. Flag bearers... I realize size is an issue here, but whenever possible the flags must be equal in height. Only in this instance where size is an issue can the American be higher. Per the new AFMAN 36-2203 update, flag bearers must drop their left hands while at Carry Colors, unless there is considerable amount of wind.
    2. Present Arms. Guards perform unauthorized Honor Guard technique. Secondary flag bearer needs to dip his flag on Count 3 of the guard's Present Arms, rather than a slow, 3-count movement.
    3. Carry Colors. You gave the proper command this time, which confuses me why it wasn't said in the beginning.... but then the guards go to port arms. They should have gone back to their respective shoulders. You can't have the guards do one thing while the colors do another, unless explicitly directed to, ex. "Guards, Port, Arms."
    4. The "march" on. Your team is walking, not marching. The commander, as well as the rest of the team, seem to lack confidence. Being nervous is normal, but this seems completely unprepared.
    5. Sling Arms. The command is, "Sling, Arms". Once given, the guards go through the entire motion until the slings are on their shoulders. There are no breaks. Reference: Army TC-3-21.5.
    6. You skipped commands before calling Uncase Colors. First you call, "Post". Guards oblique (flank at a 45 degree angle) outwards and take 4 steps, then about face. "Uncase, the Colors" is then called and the guards march forwards while the flag bearers lower the staffs. This is all detailed in the Army TC 3-21.5.
    7. I have no idea what the guards are doing after they uncased the flags. It looks like they executed Post, which was supposed to be called after performing Sling Arms. The flag cases should be carried in the left hand, not the armpit. After "Order, Arms" is given, the commander needs to call Post once more before the guards move to stow the cases. Once they are stowed, the guards move back to line formation, "unsling" their rifles, and return to Carry Colors. There is all done non-verbally. "Unsling, Arms" is not a command given.
    8. There is no such command as, "Present, Colors" in Air Force drill. You gave Present Arms in the beginning. I don't understand why you changed it. Again guards... unauthorized method.
    7. Again, guards go to Port Arms after you called Carry Colors.
    8. Order Colors. Guards again perform incorrect method. The team as a whole just isn't together, as with every movement. "Ready, Cut" is an Honor Guard technique.
Rather odd they included the inspection in the middle of your performance, but that's just a pet peeve. Nothing you can control.
    9. Carry Colors. You see the utter confusion among your guards? The left guard actually went to his shoulder like he was supposed to. Why did he do this then and not the last few times? And why is the right guard at Port? Literally makes no sense.
    10. I don't even have to explain what's wrong with the Present Arms. You've already requested to enter the drill pad. You're in the drill pad. Carry on with your sequence as normal.
    11. Carry Colors can't mean two different things. You're confusing your guards.
    12. Your "marching" is downright terrible, and you are off step. The lack of practice really shows once you started moving. There is no suspended arm swing. Again, another Honor Guard method.
    13. You're calling Left/Right wheel, but you are doing a half left/right about. The difference being that in a wheel, either the left or right guard is the pivot point for whatever direction you're going. In a half left/right about, which is what you're doing, you pivot around the center. Pick up your knees when going into half step/mark time. Your speed through everything is rushed and it makes you look sloppy.
    14. Guards do NOT go to Present Arms when "Eyes, Right" is called. Guards stay at the shoulder. The left guard, and secondary color bearer look 45 degrees to their right. Commander and right guard look straight. When you called "Ready, Front" the guards went to Port, which blows my mind. Now half your team is at Port and the other at Carry Colors.
    15. The command is "Colors Reverse, March", not "Reverse, Colors".
    15. I've never seen a color guard have to post the colors during a drill routine. I honestly like this idea, but there is no guidance for it in any regulation drill manuals, so it's entirely up to the judges if it looks good. You also called, "Order, Arms" and the rifles didn't go to the ground, something they've been doing the entire routine. Modifying, adding, or removing equipment doesn't alter the meaning of commands. Again, the command is "Colors Reverse, March", not Reverse Colors.
I realize this is a lot to take in, but your team desperately needs to change, because you really did not give it your all out there. I bet money that no one opened up a manual and learned the proper way to do anything. It's obvious that a local Base Honor Guard taught you some things, but you can't march their manual during competition. If you have any questions whatsoever, ask me. Read your manuals first. I cannot stress that enough. Literally this evaluation would be a fraction of what it is had someone had just read them. I hope you improve, and take this seriously. Best wishes

Dude drill instructors have an intimidation factor coming in, they are a lot easier to read since they only do one thing. When i was in njrotc back in the day we got inspected by dis and generally they'll scream and yell but if you answer everything right, scream and perform movements right they'll leave you alone fast in inspections. The ones who are unpredictable are the Air force TI, they have ripped me a new one just because and since we weren't air force they really took dig at us since we were the only njrotc unit in the whole school district.

Some constructive criticism: The cadets need to work on learning how to execute the commands, many times they seemed lost. Also, they need to get in sync, especially the rifles, it is all about hearing and using your peripheral vision to know what the other person is doing. Excess moment is a big issue. ya can't look around or fix your alignment, let it be, it looks bad, if a command is not called, you are a statue. And the state's harness was too low, it has to be equally high with the national color, maybe that's because of the height difference. Well, this was last year, so hopefully they have improved by then, good luck cadets.

There is no "right shoulder arms" for color guards that I recall. You simply go to carry colors.
Rifle bearers forearms are not parallel to the ground while at carry colors (right shoulder arms)
"ready cut" - why do they stick their hand so far out. They should move their free hands smartly to the position utilized at attention. Commander not at attention when approached by the DI.

Since when are there so many E-5 Drill Sergeants? When I was in, to be eligible for Drill you had to be E-5 Promotable and it was pretty rare for an E-5 Promotable to get picked up for Drill. Also, for DA-Select Drill, they were almost always looking for combat veterans. There are just some things that you only learn in battle and, with the country having been at war for 20 years, it's sort of inexplicable to me how there are so many folks that never deployed. But then, I came from Combat Arms, so maybe it's different in support world.

Not many E-5 drill Sargents come down on drill orders many E-5 drills drop a packet and volunteer, when I was in basic I only had one E-5 drill Sargent who came down with drill orders, didn’t even wanna be a drill but apparently he was just that good of a leader.
