As much as I often lament their sparse output of albums I think that’s what has always lead to their “cult status” I don’t mean that in a negative way but more of what leads to an enigmatic fascination of sorts. This was/is really sophisticated pop music that’s has escaped mainstream ears for years. I’m so many ways I’m glad they never really “blew up” big in a cultural sense for things that do often become caricatures of themselves or put more simply overly celebrated and boring. A track that is in my opinion an absolute modern masterpiece of pop is Brushed with oil dusted with powder…. If any has never heard that give it a listen… the instrumental “outro” alone is genius!

You missed Songs to Remember, my favourite LP, before the techno-innovations of Cupid and Psyche and Provision, a much more organic, soulful affair. His voice sounds marvellous against the acoustic instruments, and it has his trademark lyrical genius in spades - “I’m in love with the militanti, read your Neitzche and read Avanti” and “I was like an industry, depressed and in decline” and it has “The ‘Sweetest Girl’” which is the loveliest post-modern analysis of pop music you might ever hear. The latter song features Robert Wyatt on piano, which sort of links Scritti’s music with the progressive music mentioned in the clip!
‘They’ were always a punk ‘band’, and there is a stream of melodic writing throughout Green’s work which is very close to transitional English and Welsh folk music, and which provides a continuity to his songwriting. You can hear folk in the early DIY punk (“Hegemony, hegemony, you are the foulest creature”) as well as the later studio work (imagine The Word Girl with a folk arrangement - it really works!) and particularly on Black Bread White Beer.
