It was a privilege to be at this amazing concert by Beth Gibbons (formally of Portishead) at London’s Barbican (one of the best venues in London to listen to live music). Apologies for the poor video recording; because of the intimate nature of the gig, I kept my phone screen to my chest so as not to disturb others - which meant I could not see what I was recording. Very underrated album. The production and sonic quality is superb. A lot of the prince fans prefer his funk, soul, and ballads… As well as his Pop! But he was very underrated as a rock musician and as you say, could do it all. I visited Paisley park last week. It’s mind blowing if you ever make it to Minneapolis, do yourself a favor and stop by Paisley park for a tour.

    I have every album, both on the original labels and rereleased/rerecorded versions on their own label, up to 1990, all autographed. I was a member of The Stand (sort of fan club on steroids and a very early example of crowd funding) and stayed at their home (Claret Hall Farm) a couple of times as a star struck teen in the 80s. A couple of mates and I slept in their studio once when we couldn't get back to the Midlands after a gig in London. Safe to say, I'm a bit of a fan.

    I like the compositions on Tormato but I don't like the way the Instruments don't fit together - Rick's keyboards and Steve's guitars are way to squeaky together with Jons voice while Chris' wah-wah Bass pedals are a deep counter point but there's a soothing medium sound missing that could have been filled by and accoustic guitar or a warm Hammond organ. Really I feel the Album ist missing our warmth in sound. I feel the same about Fragile while I think the Yes Album and Close to the Edge sound warm. I'd liked o hear Tormato recomposed in a different way someday.

    It really depends on what you mean by 'progressive'. If we are talking concept albums with conspicuous musicianship and irregular non-commercial song length, then probably you coould make a good argument for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention at minimum. Maybe 'Dixie Dregs', but that's stretching it. More jazz rock fusion, really. Kansas qualifies technically, but they were more pop-oriented in their production choices. Todd Rundgren and Utopia are a solid contender.

    • @missedmusic101
      @missedmusic101 Před 13 dny

      I think you've hit the nail on the head. I know progressive rock when I hear it, but I would have difficulty defining it. I think Frank Zappa is one of those musicians who stands out from any particular genre. One comment mentioned a band called star castle and at first listen they sound like a British Prog rock band. I am going to listen to them some more when I have time. I haven't heard much Kansas, but they sound more likea bit like Wishbone Ash (who I wouldn' a guitar band, t call a prog band).

I started (as I'm sure many do) with The Real Ramona, and when I got around to it, Red Heaven really gripped me with it's fury. Interesting take on this album. I find the cover version of Anothelove on this album the standout especially with its Fleetwood Mac inspired overtones at the crescendo, but this album also has some duds like the track Boytrouble. The problem with being a rock fan and listening to Prince is u have to search the gems on various albums. Listen to the Rainbow Children album which is jazz infused but has guitar killers like The Last December. Listen to the Lotusflower album from 2009 - some stunning guitar work and production throughout and a much better album than PlectrumElectrum. U could even go to his very first album For You and at the end of all the disco pop of the album there’s a killer guitar track called Im Yours which is astonishing considering he was 19 when he recorded it. Or there’s 1995s The Gold Experience which has gems like Gold, Endorphin Machine, Shhh. Ultimately to really get Prince you have to go and listen to the stunning live shows and bootlegs - and I highly recommend you listen to the1988 Lovesexy aftershow at Den Hag - for your convenience it’s here: czcams.com/video/mcyXXGxY9Vc/video.html I envy the journey of discovery u are about to begin!
