Brass acoustic guitar nut, saddle and peg set. . . fake brass guitar parts?

  • Unboxing and review of guitar parts off Amazon and eBay. They are advertised as brass guitar nut, saddle and peg set for an acoustic guitar, but are they brass or are they fake?
    This set of brass guitar parts is commonly available on the internet at such massive stores as eBay and Amazon and described as being brass and made of durable brass material. I was suspicious because even in the photos they didn't look right, so I tested all the parts to see if they are made of genuine brass or just some other metal that has been coloured to look like brass.
    Brass is a nice material to use on a guitar or any instrument, for nuts on electric and acoustic guitar and also saddles on acoustic guitars. A brass nut produces a sound that conforms more with the sound produced by fretted notes because it is a very similar material and as a saddle on an acoustic guitar brass is bright and has good sustain and transfers resonance easily to the body so it can improve the tone of a guitar greatly. In a future video I will show you how to make and fit a brass nut on several types of guitar.
    After inspecting these guitar parts and then sanding a little of the top coating off these guitar parts I prove them to be fake. They are made of a white metal and then coloured to look like brass and therefore are fake and not as advertised, but neither Amazon or eBay care, I reported this as being a problem but my email was completely ignored.

    I appreciate that you bent over backwards to be fair and conclusive in your judgement. I find these sorts of things distressing not just because if I were to buy a set of these parts, the quality would turn out to be unacceptable, but also because I just hate seeing people doing business that way. I was in the woodworking business for for many years and would never have misled my customers in such a way. I don't want to share a hat with someone for whom I have so little respect. Thanks for the review.

    I bought brass saddles for electric guitar of ebay from China and was lucky to get actual brass. Some pictures made me doubt it on some offers. Kinda have an eye for how real brass has to look like.
    Some offers are listed in the title as brass but in description mentioned as cast zinc alloy.
    So it`s good to read carefully and/or trust your gut.

      Yes, in the past I've had no problems, but these days you have to shop very carefully to find the real thing. Some of them are obviously real from the photos and some are obviously fake. If you notify eBay they wont take the false ones down . .

    I'm currently dealing with some turning instability on my stratocaster copy, so I decided to upgrade the tuners and the nut, but still not sure which nut material should I go for. would you rather buy graphtec, synthetic bone, or brass?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  Před rokem

      personally I like brass, but this is purely personal. The Graphtec nuts come pre shaped so there's not much work to do and if you need to adjust it, they are easy to sand. So both are good. For the time being you can use graphite (or soft pencil) on the strings at the nut, it acts like a lubricant. 😊

    Unless you're doing a lot of "vintage" work that needs to be period correct, these wan-n-be brass saddles and nuts work out fine for me. Most of my work is up grading "entry" level axes that end up with younger players anyway, so cost becomes an issue.
    To take a " hanger queen" (something that's hung on the wall in a pawn shop wayyy too long), or a "guerilla" (something with an action so high it takes a guerilla to play it), get rid of those horrible plastic nuts and bridges, brighten the tone, help the sustain, and turn them into affordable players has a certain reward to it. Something a budding rockstar is going to be able to tune and play instead of throwing in the closet because their finders are bleeding, and the damn thing is toneless or out of tune constantly. That's a kick for me, and I do pretty good at peddling as well.

      Not correct. Steel sounds brighter, brass enhances the bottom end too and the treble with less harsh overtones. So brass is definitely a more “musical" alloy. (speaking about nuts and saddles for electric guitars. I used both alloys)
