Xbox Series S isn’t holding next-gen back, reality is

- There’s a pernicious rumour going around that the humble Xbox Series S, the cheapest next-gen console on the market, is somehow causing other, better machines to be compromised with unnecessary framerate caps. Quite how the rumour started is a little convoluted, but I’ve explained all in the accompanying video. And, look, here’s the thing: it’s a load of rubbish.
If anything, if the Series S was responsible for reducing the overall complexity of next-gen games compared to what they could achieve were it not a factor, then the big boy machines - it stands to reason - would have plenty of headroom left over for performance boosts. But that’s not what’s happening.
It certainly isn’t happening in the case of Gotham Knights, which kicked off this whole ridiculous mini-controversy by launching without any performance modes despite being next-gen exclusive. This is due, we’re told, to the complexity of the game… which was originally slated for PS4 and Xbox One, but those versions were cancelled, and the game we got feels decidedly last gen and can barely maintain a stable framerate regardless. Go figure.
The Series S is a next-gen machine in all the ways that count: specifically, its super-fast NVME storage and robust CPU, both of which are basically identical to its bigger brother, and on a par with the PS5 in terms of raw numbers. It has a less impressive GPU and not as much RAM, but this is a compromise aimed at getting the price as low as possible with the concession that this machine is intended to be used with last-generation television screens and 1440p monitors. It’s not supposed to compete with premium consoles and three-grand PCs, it’s supposed to be cheap, cheerful, and “good enough” for your average user. Which it is.
It also represents a significant step up in terms of the base spec of gaming hardware that people tend to have in their homes, namely the base PS4, a workhorse machine which is still going strong due to various factors (as explored in the above video) but is hamstrung by a slow HDD and a lacklustre CPU: both of these are drag factors with the next gen machines, including the Series S, are design to negate.
With millions of users still, for whatever reason, unable or unwilling to upgrade from the last-gen machine or low spec PC they’re currently rocking (not to mention machines like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck), it seems churlish to blame the Series S for dragging down the minimum spec that studios have to cater for when, if anything, it would appear to be pushing up the average.
Some developers feel all the same that Microsoft’s requirement to support the Series S with every Xbox release - preventing them from splitting the userbase - is cramping their style. But if they’re that determined to artificially cut their market in half, there’s nothing stopping them from making their games exclusive to other platforms.
That’s capitalism, baby. The freedom to choose!

#SeriesS #Potato #30fps - Hry
The global economy never recovered from 2008, and shows exactly zero sign of ever doing so in the future, not when the biggest long term drags on economic activity are inequality & climate change, and the biggest economies only ideas for fixing things are austerity (making poor people poorer), tax cuts (making rich people richer), and fossil fuel subsidies (pumping co2 into the armosphere even faster). I'd say things are going to get worse before they get better, but that would be a lie. The truth is things are going to get worse and then keep right on getting worse for as long as anyone alive today will live, and probably for a dozen or so generations after.
The mainstream gaming industry absolutely needs to start reorienting towards a future where they have to compete on price more than power. As such, the series s is a much more realistic vision of the future than the series x or ps5, let alone multi-thousand dollar gaming pcs or vr sets.
Completely agree

I don't think the future's this bleak. To avoid derailing politically too far (i agree with the themes but not the intensity), I think there's another factor to the gaming space: The technology to make games is upscaling development time and resources, but it's not making games more entertaining. A lot of games are getting remastered, a lot of major requirement-pushing titles are flopping, and indie games, mobile games, and emulators have absolutely exploded. The lesson isn't just "we need to think cheaper about gaming equipment". It's "we need to stop upscaling development". Whatever the event horizon for sufficient performance to produce an entertaining product is without much compromise, quite frankly we already passed it.
Sir, this is Wendy's.
Yeah but the worlds resources are like a pie. The more people that want a slice, the smaller that slice will inevitably be. We now have Asia wanting their piece of the pie and there is around 3 billion people there

The part that continues to be missed is over half of the market DOES NOT have a 4K display. So 60% of the people that could play a game are only playing on a 1080p TV at best! The Series S is completely fine for the majority of the market.
Is it really half the market? Im not doubting you, but that's crazy considering how cheap 4k tvs are. I got a 55 inch 4k tv for only 300 dollars
@@SeanJohn127 not everyone is in the market to buy a tv. If they were, they would find the prices acceptable and buy it. I do have a family 4k tv but my own personal tv that I run the series s on is a 1080 p tv that is from nearly ten years ago. It works great no problem. For as long as the tv is working, why should I go out and buy another 4k tv for gaming? I have a gamepass and I have so many games from it that I have filled my 2 tb hard disk. I am firmly in the market of gaming and I don't feel like putting up the money for a 4k display while my 1080p tv works great. I believe that would be a majority of people.
And then there would be countries where 4k TVs would be expensive. Even there an Xbox series s paired with gamepass is a killer deal. Why should the gaming industry not cater to them?
@@abmstudio3678 i wasnt doubting your finding and statistics, i just think its crazy to me is all. As a gamer, i try and keep up with things lol, a 55 inch 4k tv now is 200 percent cheaper than when i first bought a 50 inch 720p tv for 1700 dollars in 2008
@@SeanJohn127 I am just the kind of gamer who will be happy with 1080p 60. I would rather have ray tracing or more artistic than pay for 4k. I would have to pay in total 500 dollars more to play in 4k at least. And if I want to do it with a pc, I have to pay at least that much more. I don't feel that's worth it. And a majority of people will feel the same.
Not only that but even most 4k TVs aren’t capable of displaying true 60fps anyway. Most people don’t even know what 60fps even looks like. People just complaining about paper stats.
Digital Foundry did some digging and figured that the Gotham Knights engine is not optimized to run well on multi-threaded CPU's and the CPU is the bottleneck for this game not GPU, in other words, the problem is the devs not Series S :)
Imagine not optimising for multi core cpus in 2022
The bottleneck is definitely the techniques utilized in Game Development. AAA development particularly has started to hit a plateau. I don’t think we’ll see next gen until new technology (like cloud ai and infrastructure) and more importantly new ways to utilize existing technology come out. As is games are starting to look and play worse than last gen.
@@vullord666 its not technique or anything. The only bottleneck here is money and time. There is no reason current gen titles should look same or worse than previous there is simply no other reason. Ps5 and series X are many times more powerful than ps4 and xbox one. So its all up to devs to use current tools properly towards making next gen games without blowing out the budgets. But considering global economical crisis we endure during last 3-4 years many companies just could not manage development budgets correctly, thats why you see new games being garbages as they are, its not the tools or lack of console power its money management and human resources issues.

Thats not how it works.
Yes! Finally someone who tells it like it is. Some developers are simply using the perfectly adequate Series S as a scapegoat for their own lack of skill and talent. Subbed.
Exactly, this excuse never made any sense since you can target series S separately from series X. Even without that you just need to look at Steam survey to know that the average PC is not better than the Series S. So does that mean that PC is holding it back? Obviously not
Meanwhile steamdeck is running everything smoothly in SD card 😂🤣😂...
If Xenoblade 2 and 3 can run without the switch catching fire. Then nobody else has an excuse.
most games released for PC's scale pretty well to potato hardware, so developing for the S shouldn't be insurmountable

Another question... If the Series S was really holding back, it means that they should be targeting the game to the less powerful hardware. The series S is an excellent console. Especially for $300. I was going to upgrade to the X but seriously don't see the point, I was a hardcore PC gamer buying the newest RTX cards and Multi-core CPUs until I bought the S. It now sits in my living room and it has somehow brought back fun to a lot of games. Just turn on the little Xbox that could (That boots faster than the TV can turn on) launch a game and just play, the S made me stop worrying so much about spending countless paychecks on the newest hardware, instead just playing the games and enjoying the time I spent. Unless the game is poorly optimized, such as Gothom Knights. Check out Digital Foundry's video on which they test out the game on PC.
That's not how that works.
Think it has more to do with a lazy production team that refuses to come up with clever solutions to get a game working on the target hardware. Now it seems like devs/publishers would rather blame the hardware instead of the lack of ingenuity.

Usually people who come from a place of insecurity have the need to bash things as a way to feel like they are cool. Back to high school. "I was bullied in high school but I'm a cool guy because I have an expensive gaming PC, I feel so powerful". Most gamers are losers who fail at life, remember
It's also great as a secondary console. I have a PS5 as my main console Series S is my secondary 👍
I mean, the series s can run Overwatch 2 at 1440p 60fps or dynamic 1080p at a locked 120 fps. The machine is no potato with a pretty great CPU for how much you're paying for it.
Realistically it's not too hard to optimize for series s. Most games are released for PC these days and that generally means that several levels of asset quality are made. If we were talking the Xbox 360/ PS3 era it would be more understandable as the hardware differences between Xbox 360, ps3 and PC are immense. Series s, x and ps5 are quite similar to PC hardware these days though so scaling is a pretty small factor. Even if a developer doesn't have enough resources to develop multiple assets, they can still reduce the resolution, reduce frame rate or utilize some features of the current hardware. The only real challenge is when you have to account for CPU difference and even some stuff related to that can be scaled accordingly.
The graphical capability of the Series S is on the level of a $200 GPU from 6 years ago.

Reason is that more and more game have a update for the Xbox series .
And if you only the Xbox series -s-x you can not download Xbox one normal game.
And than you have the problem with space on your ssd .
So personal.
Leave the old Xbox one for your old games.
And thake a Xbox series -s for the new games and pay a digitale game for.
Nice bonus is that the digital game can use on your old Xbox one.
That is the reason i have Xbox one -s and a Xbox Series -s .
And yes i have upgrade the old Xbox one -s with a internal ssd.
And belief me it really start fast up and even games load faster .
A nice upgrade for the old Xbox.
If you do that .
You need Xbox recovery from Microsoft (its legaal to use)
And a ssd that use this setup .
512Gb ssd and a real 1Tb ssd .
Than just swap use a usb stick and instal the Xbox software. .
A lot of people use the external ssd drive.
The problem with that is .
That you still the internal for temporary files for wap information well playing the game.
Internal is faster in always .
I do not regret that i have upgrade to a ssd.
Things you need to know.
Xbox one black (1e) have a sata 300 controller its slow and stay slow but loading swap files are fast .
The Xbox one -s and Xbox one x both have a sata 600 controller that is faster than the old harddrive can do .
And yes even online games load faster .
I felt the same as you do until I learned how much a Blu-Ray drive cost. It would have made the Series S around $100 more expensive and closed the price gap vs the Series X to such a large degree a lot of people would just have gone for the Series X instead.
@@SweBeach2023 Microsoft can use a update so you can use a usb dvd drive for the old Xbox 360games or even update for a usb blu-ray drive
Than you can always use it to instal a game
But yes a usb blu-ray drive cost 100 euro .
Its not a cheap thing
sounds like you need get the S if you don't have $500 when you need it
@@dyslectische Allowing the use of an external device could become a major security threat. A much better solution would be a trade-in program where people sent their physical game copies to MS and instead received a digital copy, all for a small fee.
Honestly I don’t even care about 4K let alone 1440p if the series S ran every game at 1080p 120fps I think a lot of people would be happy with that not all but most would. I have a series X and S and I’m super happy with they both perform.
Yeah, look at page tale requiem and it's 120 fps on series s.
@@gio7796 its 30fps, not 120fps.
There's a 120hz mode that targets 40fps by using 1/3rd screen refresh, but doesnt reach 40fps on series s often. It's mid 30's at most the vast majority of the time.
This is the most sensible, well reasoned video game related content I've seen in ages. Subbed.
Series S actually furthers game development... Because it forces developers to better at optimizing.
To much to ask for nowadays unfortunately
Ehh what. It takes additional work for devs is what it does. Having one console spec is ideal for devs. Games will always perform better on ps5 on release just cuz the series S and X are lagging after.
Finally, a sensical video on this topic, not like all the other channels just ragging on it because its 'the cool thing to do'.
Excellent video. Also enjoy the cheeky cameo from Bitsocket towards the end.
What the name of the song at beginning and I ended up getting series x because of being able to continue few games instead of waiting for it to start up but the series s isn't bad console I have one in the living room for kids to play mine craft and they don't care about the difference from s and x but I just like being able to switch games without having to see the start up screen every time.
It's just a convenient excuse for devs for poor optimization.
Digital Foundry's analysis on Gotham Knights appears to indicate that its issues are cpu related. Therefore, the S's gpu is probably not holding anything back.
Does the series S hold back the ps5 series x or pc when making games ?
The series S isn’t holding gaming back unrealistic deadlines set by management that lead to crunch, and therefore unfinished games is the only constant we’ve had had with the gaming industry for generations now.
I never comment on videos... but u nailed this one... great argument!!!!
At this point, I'm willing to settle for a Series S, just for cost sake. The only really problem is that I do own Xbone games on disc and I won't be able to take advantage of the performance enhancements, unless they were also on Gamepass. I hope that Microsoft's "disc-to-digital" patent gets put in motion in that time.
That 'For Balance' flip off got me 🤣🤣🤣
What’s the second game shown in the beginning?
I've had my Series S for a year now. Love it, performance, visuals, and load times are fantastic. Like you said, just a matter of opinion. Microsoft has been doing great updates. Some peoples expectations will always be unreal.
There are more series s consoles in homes than the series x
Devs would basically cut more Xbox owners than they realize
Exactly in fact almost everyone I know that has the new Xbox has a series s. Only one has the S
@@nekaneka-lo2js you mean only one has the X.
Shouldn’t the untethered multiplayer be the only mode that applied the “30 fps cap” to the game? When you disable it it should be able to reach high frame rates, right?
7:07 and also people that do care about power (consumption), considering todays electricity prices it is just a great way to enjoy the latest games without braking the bank and electricity bill. Consumption is something we tend to forget when comparing prices, it is not just initial buy but also operating costs.
If only Series S had a disc drive it would be an instant buy for me.
Digital is better.
Dude! That was an awesome run down of how awesome the Series S is. Thank you! ❤️
Completely agree - games just need to scale better. Some folks want to game on the go, some want the ultimate experience - your just going to lose profit/market share and alienate fans by catering to only one side… I know it takes more money to develop, but all this stuff should start to be boilerplate in game development…
Just complementary to the video, since at some point it was mentioned both consoles have same hardware ( i dont have any xbox ) so i checked and from info you get on the wikipedia page in the compare section it shows another story, the cpu looks the same but 200Mhz slower, though the GPU is clearly way weaker ( 20 Compute Units at 1.5Ghz vs 52 CU at 1.8 Ghz for series X ), memory 10GB gddr6 with a bus of 128-bit VS 16GB gddr6 320bit bus on the X gpu
( 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s for the X
8 GB @ 224 GB/s, 2 GB @ 56 GB/s for the S ),
the SSD is exactly the same on both consoles.
So in the end, just by itself the series S isn't really a bad console, just the equivalent of between xbox one S and xbox one X.
People will just pick a console depending the kind of game and the kind of experience they are looking for. One isn't worse than the other, it is more a question of taste and also income, not everyone can afford expensive consoles. So cheaper one but still not bad still allow people to still be able to play games with somewhat correct perf/visual quality ratio for a reasonable price.
6:06 "The Steam Deck is a souped up netbook"
Bravo. Microsoft and AMD gives all the tools to developers to be successful on their platform as well. Microsoft introduced a lot with DX12, direct storage and a number of memory management systems within the NT Kernel the Xbox runs on. AMD has shown Zen 2 and RDNA are very scalable with using less power than previous generations but outputting so much more. The gpu cores inside the APU of the Series S is not the strongest or fastest, but it is heavily optimized to run with very low overhead in DX12. It's the same reason why you see almost damn near impossible ports to the switch. A Quad core a53 SOC with Maxwell cores. Nvidia is great at optimizing and gives all the tools available to developers to do this(with partnership of Nintendo of course).
Is all the gameplay shown coming from a series s?
Oh I love how you have the series mounted behind the cabinet. Awesome idea 👍👍
Im subbing purely for this guys - excellent commentary calling out devs who want an easy scapegoat
those lazy coders get lazier day after day
they don't want to make optimized code that runs on relatively old hardware
and as a result we have witnessed simple websites going from "just works" using low resources to bloated abomination that requires new and high end specs just to do a simple task
Great video. If I didn't already have a decently capable PC, I definitely would have bought a Series S.
If anything developers using ramped up hardware is detrimental to gaming.
I think of the advancements by Rare in the snes days with software solutions over raw power
This is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen. Loved it. Great job m8
Series S is absolutely booming in my country (and other poor countries) where people look for something cheap to play casually on
This channel is a hidden Gem. Real talk about the gaming industry.
Greetings from across the pond. I like how you're telling how it is, not repeating what industry insiders say. The main reason to blame last Gen consoles is because the managers running these developers are setting time frames that do not allow for proper testing and debugging. By removing the need to work on last Gen, they also force consumers to upgrade.
It's a form of changing the marker through price discrimination.
“Industry insiders” = devs
How DARE devs argue that a piece of hardware much less powerful than either of the two main spec points they’re working with is less powerful. How DARE they say that.
This guy has no idea what he’s talking about.
I don’t think it’s holding back next-gen but future games on the Series S may require even more compromises. We’re getting 60fps with many cross-gen games now but Series S owners may have to live with 30fps in the future. That and sub-1080p gaming may become the norm on the smaller console.
After being a PlayStation kid since the PS2, I’m taking my first step into Xbox with the Series S on Thursday. I’m heading straight to the store after work to buy one. I can’t wait!
You won't regret it!
After this video, I pet my Series S. (not like I ever thought it was bad before)
Great video. I have Series S and X, and Series S is a great little box, especially with game pass and an SSD expansion. These Gotham Knights Devs are just making excuses for being hacks.
it seems to be - because the limiter is the CPU - and with games limited by CPU, it hamstrings the GPU ?
I play series S on a 55 inch tv. Looks great on every game I have played so far. I have played series X and don’t notice any difference apart from when they pointed out ray tracing in guardians of the galaxy. Even then I would have missed it, if it wasn’t pointed out.
Series s is a stingingly good value console designed for games pass. To that end it’s an amazing console.
With that said, I also play ps4 and that still looks great on most games, just noisier and longer loading times.
Play them in 4K and tell us you can't see the difference.
@@miketran4289 yeah it seems that quite a few people need their eyes checked lol
@@miketran4289 The only games to even have a big difference in 4k on Xbox is the newest Forza Horizon and Halo Infinite.
If pc games can have graphics sliders, why can't consoles have a similar system, even if it's just an benchmark test that selects setting per the console you play on?
Right now we’re dealing in counterfactuals. We’ll only be able to tell once we get a lot more PS5 only titles in the latter part of this generation because there’s been few of those so far. Only then can we conclude how much one x86 console truly holds back the other.
Reality can often be disappointing
more and more so. besides the more realistic games i see the more meh it feels. "so when we finally reach photorealism you mean we will just look at games that look exactly like the 60s samurai movies and indiana jones movies? cool i guess".
however i like to think S is holding back making better worlds with more npcs etc. but when you look at the mobile and live service as well as remaster buzz its pretty clear most studios dont even think about creating actually more ambitious games.
Really well argued Jim!
What the heck? How I have never discovered this channel? I know the website but this video was so great. Subscribed instantly.
It seems the point has been missed, Sony and Microsoft both said they would have 4k60fps as the baseline for next gen. Steam deck is a bad example because it was made known it's a handheld that is actually the most powerful version of handheld. The issue is that if this was made known beforehand it wouldn't be an issue.
The biggest question I have with the series s is why did they only include 10gb of memory? That is a tougher bottleneck for developers than a weaker GPU.
Because memory is expensive & hasn't really gone down in price for the past 10 years thanks to the smartphone market constantly inflating demand - and visual assets are easier to scale across spec differentials than CPU-dependent scenarios. You can reduce distance LOD, texture resolution, model complexity, shadow map detail .etc without impacting the experience too much. But cut down on physics objects/complexity, AI entities/crowds, animations .etc and you start having a very different experience of the game.
The other thing is for gaming 10 gigs is actually quite a bit and it's rare for a game to actually use that much. My 3080 Ti has 12 gigs and I almost never see it using more than 10 even with my 3440x1440 monitor.
@@InMaTeofDeath You pc also has ram though.
The series s has 10GB in total that needs to be used between game data, audio, game code, the OS background tasks and graphics.
"1000 series gpu's still reign supreme in the real world of PC gaming, which is distinct from the fantasy world of reddit, where everyone's got a forking 3090." Omfg, classic statement! I also see this on youtube and twitter, where everyone seems to have a forking 4090. Hee hee.
Such a good video I subbed brother!
Memory bandwidth could be an issue going forward but other than that it should be fine for the entirety of this generation.
Brilliant video. Really made me smile too.
Love my Series S, never going to spend crazy money on a console. AKA a toy.
A console is not a toy it's a piece of capable hardware. But sure use outdated views on videogames 🙄
@@jjnet123 exactly, that hardware after its used up in a few years is useless afterwards

hi just seen ure vlog on CZcams about the series s and i have a series s and i think its good as my tv is 1080p and i don't give a shit about 4k as long as my series s plays games i live in uk and i paid 90 quid for my series s on market place as i can't afford new one but it works great
You should look into game pass. It’s the best value for your money if you want to play more games
As a Series S owner I love this video.
Huge shock there
The Series S makes everyone question everything. It's cheap, super small, something you'd never expect. Try buying a PC this powerful with this amount of money. Trust me its Impossible!
I don’t have to trust you. I can pull out my phone and clearly see that a gpu cost more than the entire console. Pc gamers took an L these past few years. But they shit on console owners for not blowing their life savings on toys. Fuck em
I'm fortunate enough to have a PC and PS5 as well as a Series S which is my GamePass box (on hold until Starfield). Can tell you the difference between Series S and the beefer harder isn't that large. And I'm running the Series S through an LG CX 65" and it runs absolutely fine.
I play on the PS5 and my friend plays the series S. There is downsides to both consoles. But the series S is a nippy little thing for its price. The only issue I found is BF2 starkiller base crashes on split screen and doesn't on PS5. I think both are great depending on what you want for me GT and R&C for PS5. But if the XSS is not up to par compared to SX and PS5 how would it work by the end of generation. But if you're a casual gamer the XSS is a great little thing and much smaller than the full PS5.
The Series S is not a potato by any means. Idk if it is actually holding it back. But I do think that’s their excuse for not making any new games.
I think people just wanna flex that they didn't buy the budget series s and act superior
Being on PC, the series S honestly is a great option for those that just want to game. He makes a great point in this video being that one would be hard pressed to build a PC for the price/performance one gets with the series S. My buddy has one and loads into games just as fast as I do. This can only be a good thing for the consumers.
Im buying an series s in a few days so does that make me a potato too?
No a banana
Great Video bro. Truly the best video I’ve seen on CZcams in weeks. Good laugh at the end too.
The Gotham knights devs are just lazy, they decided to use the series s as a scape goat for their poor optimisation
