Note: As of August 2021 update you can upgrade houses, devs had promised the same for the Weaponsmith building, but as of today I cannot see that functionality in play.
They since released a September 2021, did you see it yet, and has the rest become any better?
@@kasimirdenhertog3516 hey there. No not seen that. I wish the Devs the best but this game has a hard road ahead of it.
@@mattymojo such a shame, I was really hyped after your 'the good', but then 'the bad' came and that made me decide not to buy this game.
On a different note, I really like the format of your reviews. Actually going back to what the devs say the game should be and setting out from there, that works much better than 'I fired it up, played a few hours, and this is what I think'.
@@kasimirdenhertog3516 In my real work, I learnt that on a project or similar what the managers say early is very important, their "statements of intent" so to speak, as it should drive their design....it is a good bench mark to see if they are doing what they say. Kasimir - thanks for the watch, really appreciate it and taking the time to drop a comment. Respect.
Got any different thoughts now? There have been a few updates and the new city building update I saw could be good
Probably one of the greatest and most detailed reviews I've seen in a long, long.. Time!
Keep up your amazing content man!
Hi Wholf. Thanks for the very nice comment. I do appreciate it. Take care in this crazy world.
A mix of this and valheim would be a dream.
That's so bad because I really really need something like this fleshed out. A medieval city builder with use of fortifications and combat and good graphics.
Well said.
yea im looking for that too, found anything?
@@repowave9653 Nope
@@Gilmaru dang, i think imma buy frostheim then
this is what age of empires 4 should have been like, Visually.
Man, good job on the narration and insight to detail about this game! keep it up! sub'ed
Subscribed. Very well done review. Organized, thoughtful, and straightforward.
Thanks Miguel. Stay safe.
As a casual Northgard player, this actually looks pretty cool ngl, might give it a try.
I'm sure it has improved a bit since my review.
love how you welcome and thanks for klicking on youre video and not trying to force a like or sub
Stats show people don't mind if you do ask for subs etc but it needs to be quick and unobtrusive. I'd prefer not to do it at all but stats also show it does help. Thanks Sam.
Awesome game. Played it as a tester, loved it and then bought a copy to support the work. I sure hope they will keep developing the game.
As a lover of Dawn of Man, having mixed feelings about games like Ancestor's Legacy and waiting for Manor Lords I thought this game might be the one for me to play as I wait for Manor Lords but it seems this isn't the Viking RTS with the great parts of Dawn of Man I was hoping for, thanks so much for the review, I'll definitely be watching this one for a while longer before making any moves
Hey Adam. Pleased it helped a bit. Take care.
@@mattymojo You too, you've gained a subscriber, it's clear you're really putting effort into these videos, all the best
imagine not waiting for manor lords
Thank you for how you reviewed this very interesting game, I was going to buy it but I'm very picky on how the game keeps you engaged, yes like any Stratergy game lover, I to enjoy sending qoute- in/over time- built armies to Field battles or defending your -country/Castle etc However it's everything that leads upto those points that keeps your focus, to have a game that you could free build an entire country/Empire from Scratch from its Economy to it's Financial growth and Military progress, obviously graphics and it's game mechanics matter but yeah I guess I'm just to fussy lol recommend (Total war 1 and 2)(BannerLord)-Most recomended)
Hey Jayy - super good to be fussy in the game world. Good on you.
its £10. That's £1 an hour. I can honestly say at £1 an hour its worth buying now. Christ you'd pay more than that for 2 pints of beer at the pub that lasts you less than an hour lol
Actually that is a good point, we often don't break game costs down like this. How much does it cost to go to a movie? What is the return on that expense? Which of course then begs the question - are you paying to off set costs or just for the entertainment it gives you. Does a beer provide more value, in that regards? Can you even compare them? It is a question that will haunt philosophers for eons.
Yeah, £1 an hour is what your mom charges
Call of Duty games are $60 with about 2.5 hours of campaign. So Frozenheim is a steal.
I have always been surprised at the value people give at video games but yet spend ridiculous amounts on things that provide value for as short as 5 mins to 3 hours at 10 times the price. Value is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
When you put it like that it's a steal. Lol
This game got me interrested, but i think ill just wait it out al little bit. Thanks alot for this video!
You are very welcome Ritchie.
Great review, a lot of your negative comments are actually positive to me. lol I love the simplicity of it.
Ha. Nice stuff Alvin.
Thanks for review. I almost bought it, but I think I will wait.
Excellent video 📹.. might be saving my money on this one . Sub and liked!
Thanks fella, it has a long way to go - that's for sure.
Liked,Subed,Commented . Nice Review Mate.
Gladiuz, you be the legend..!!!
Thank you this was very helpful
resources managment is a dealbreaker for this game , awesome graphics and gameplay ,
This looks similar to "Ground Control" in some of the UI elements. I wonder if they would have been more successful if they dropped the city building elements and just focused on battles like this old RTS did.
Yeah you could be right, it was confused.
Check out "Ancestors" for that ;-)
Great style of presenting a review of a title, admire the way you haven't just copied the thousands of others out the and found you own style and uniqueness. The game itself looks stunning, but more style over substance, alarm bells started ringing when I watched the trailer on Steam and saw the archers draw back and let loose with the arrows following a weedy arc that travelled about 12 foot. The Ragnarok kill switch upon finding the final Rune as well ?! probably a blessed relief. What a shame.
*I cannot agree with your opinion on the bad things because this is the way the game was planned - simple and beautiful!*
No problems, some people may love that, but a lot won't. Cheers.
In terms of the food production as a CON, I think focusing on battle would be much more convenient than having a huge variety of prodcution options.
Additional stories can be developed (single player mode), that would absolutely give the game a huge push forward.
I'm an old fashioned (Age of Empire Trial) player, still playing the Demo version until now, despite the fact that I'm fan of thise specific franchise (AoE) and I do have all its releases, as well as StarCraft where resources are pretty much the same and fixed.
**I think focusing on combat styles, strategies and battles (for both single & multiplayer games) would be more beneficial to players/developers than having the player deeply involved in supply chains, economics and huge variety of resources to produce new/additional goods. This is a strategy game after all!!! (Where, How, When to attack and with what force)**
I just wanted to point out how do I see RTS games based on my personal experience and passion.
By the way the game is pretty promising and it looks really good
Thanks for the watch O
Good review
Would you be interested in doing a new review for full access? Hard to find one as of today. I would be very interested to see if your review has changed or if it would still be about the same.
Unsure, I do think it needs a final release review. However I'm very stretched for time. I'll keep it on the list, I do like to give games a fair shot.
good review matey
Cheers man.
I myself played the game at launch, i havent played it for awhile now as it was laching content back then. I may go back now to see how it is though.
I'm sure it has improved, good luck, and great name by the way!
@@mattymojo Thank you Kindly. Enjoy your week.
I’m a Massive Dawn of Man fan, and am looking for the next challenge since that game is no longer being supported by the devs, its about 4-5 months on since your review here so two questions come to mind?
Is the game in a better state?
Are there other similar style games to dawn of man you can recommend?
Thanks, from your newest subscriber at the time of writing 😉
Hey Tundra - you be a legend. I've not looked back at the game to be honest, I was deeply disappointed by it.
I did look at Going Medieval I while back, not the same as Dawn of Man - I've heard they've provided some good updates since my video.
czcams.com/video/XSFXYAF3FwQ/video.html
In this genre - "Foundation" keeps popping up for me. I've not played it, as not had the time, but it looks pretty compelling.
Take care my friend in this crazy world.
they thought about ancient times (the women may were just not shown on purpose) and the buildings are too hard to destroy with small armies, its better than age of empires if they had all the civs. and army for buildings is lacking for pvp
I was surprised to see that the devs claim the game is city building first and RTS second, yet the economy building aspect of the game seems so simple.
Hey Rigel, well it certainly was when I played it.
@@mattymojo Yeah, I agreed with your commentary with how it needs more production chains.
Have you been keeping up with this any, or gave up on it? If you are still following, is there any hope some 5+ months later? This looks great graphically and on paper seems to be a really good game. But they have a long way to go to make the city building fun, and interesting maps to explore. I like huge maps and procedurally generated ones tend to off the most replay value. There are issues with the randomization sometimes but I find, even the best hand crafted maps get stale after a play or 2. :/
Hey there. Unfortunately I've not kept up with it so unsure of what state it is in now. Apologies.
Had a multiplayer game today and had all runestones. Saw a 2min timer to "stop the ritual" and got destroyed by the ragnarok stuff. I don't understand it, wtf. Was this a bug?
I've only played a version from a number of months back, but the ragnarok concept was odd even then.
This is like Age of Empires but limited just to Vikings, with elements of Frostpunk?
Yeah, true...but not quite up to those other games to be honest.
@@mattymojo Oh, sed. The game looks amazing to be honest, so I was planning on getting it but saw it was still in early-access. Hopefully the devs address the concerns that people have raised. Would like to see it succeed!
I was hating on the trailer of this game as it looked like it was just trying to capitalize the Hype that Manor Lords built up and simply thought it to be some sort of scam. I did change my mind as the visuals looked beautiful but the game just seems Hollow.
Aye, it is at the moment. They may flesh it out more, but at the moment hollow is a good description.
This is not a city building game, this is basically an RTS that should be focused on combat, because that's what RTS are for. Such a shame, because it's such a beautiful game that I was hyped to play. They should have gone either with full on city building or full on RTS. They could do a hybrid, but if they can't make one, it would be much harder to make two in one.
Sometimes I wish that I could sit in on dev planning meetings, and point out to them "no don't do that.....just get this bit right...etc..." Often their ambitions don't match the product.
Stidi contint!
whta is the best game like this?
Expand?
It got better.
Nice, I'm pleased.
is there a video thats in bald eagle english?? looking for a translation for a friend.
I don't know what you mean - bald eagle english?
@@mattymojo probably making fun of your accent
I really hate it when games have cover pictures that look like a AAA third person games, such as Skyrim, God Of War, Witcher, Assasin's Creed etc. and then when you check the review it turns out it's just a strategy game, or card game, or 2D platformer.. Very misleading thumbnails by the developers
100% agree.
+1Kudos
enemy ai is soooooo easy,
its too bad that all the "good stuff" have nothing to do with gameplay. i guess i'll wait for a sale.
I personally wanted a simple, non complicated builder so I would disagree that it is bad feature - depending on what you are looking for.
I just don't have your kind of time to dedicate to gaming and needed something exactly like this that i don't need to dedicate dozens of hours to.
But the fact that NPCs are all male is hilarious.
Understood - we all want different things in a game.
No real interest in the game but awesome review!
Thanks Dave. Nice to see a fellow NZer pop in for a visit. Legend.
"gay communes" (no disrespect intended) this actually implies disrespect since no one was assuming it otherwise. You gave us the idea!
What I meant was by me saying "gay communes" (no disrespect) is that there is nothing wrong with a gay commune. I meant no offence. Cheers for the comment.
Looks like Ancestors Legacy is more fun than this game. More factions.
TL;DR It's too simple
yeah this is really boring game after i play almost 1 hour and finish to build all buildings and research all of tech you have nothing to do just watch the beatiful graphics and thats all i really need manor lords
Ah, what a shame. This game looks really good, but that is about all it can offer. Large as an ocean, deep as a puddle. Either the devs came out WAY too early in early access or they really did think that this bare bones city builder would be enough for some casual gamers.
It boggles my mind how after Life is Feudal, which is arguably THE BEST medieval city building game, devs can still make such inferior games. No one really says you should copy all the best games out there, but at least take the bits that made those great games and add your own twist to it. Sure they added combat to a medieval city builder, but even the combat is shit, with dumb AI and ridiculously easy battles.
Instead of doing it like this with multiple small settlements on a small map, they should have just had a medium map only for the player city and getting invaded by other viking clans from off map. This way it would have allowed them to focus more on the city building mechanics which are seriously lacking.
Then they could have done raiding missions in an over world map as simple menu items with short stories, like they did it in Frostpunk. Even though that map is a static drawing with some circles and blips on it, the events that you encounter are made so much more interesting because of the image and the story behind them. Although im guessing these guys never intended to have any story events in the game.
This game has a good start but it needs so much more time in the oven.
Thanks for the well thought out comment, but I will note that this video is relatively old and maybe the game has improved? Thanks again and take care.
you know game is not worth when talking about bad sides takes twice as long as the good sides xD
Ha - true.
I find you review correct but really ripped from reality. its 15$ game, by saying what you have said its not worth buying it, you most likely haven't played much in online games recently people pay for skins or accessories in inside games purchases much more than this whole game value. I think you are doing wronging to this game developers since its a beautiful game! gorgeous sound track and for 15$?? its a steal !
And I hope it will just get better in time from update to update.
Hey Asaf - pick up VRising for $15 and see if you can see the difference in quality of product delivered - by an early access game. When I played the game, it was genuinely sad - but it may well be better now. And when people put things up, or ask people to pay for them, they are 100% open to whatever feedback comes at them as they made that choice. I appreciate you think I've done them a bit of wrong, but I respectfully disagree.
@@mattymojo I appreciate the reply, I do agree on your review and its flaws they added few mods since the date you uploaded your video, I'm sure they will get much better, but for 15$ I think this game is amazing visually and sound wise which is the main thing in a game.
The mechanics they would work it out I'm sure they will expand and will make more buildings and improve the AI of the enemy and add some more maps but the game as it is, as much as boring as you said it became after 10 hours.. you still wanted it to last longer.. :)
@@asafheller5720 Understood.
Why even make a city building game of a culture and era that had no cities? No wonder there are only a few building types and no upgrading of them. Even now some of the buildings are complete made up.
Just an honest RTS game would be a better focus. Or a survival against the nature (you could expand nature resources and crafting so much) and hostiles, finding resources.
100% agreed.
You are aware Dublin was built by vikings?
@@Macky4941 Settled or built? I'd think that many places in British Isles area were settled / first built by Vikings, but they would have been simple places I'd imagine.
youre wrong

soulless review tbh
More to the point - thanks for the soulless comment.
