Anyone else studying how turbos works so Their dad doesn’t think they’re a failure.
nah i just want a turbo in my car and wanted to know how it works
i didn't knew that they were connected to the oil supply from the car pretty cool
Really great explanation
So does the initial air drawn from the turbo enter the air box before entering the combustion chamber ?
Yes.
remember that the engine is still being fed its own separate air supply from the intake.
@@MacLaw3084 the intake being the turbo..
So what is the difference between waste gate and blow off valve?
Waste gate is on the exhaust side, blow off or recirc valve is on the intake side. Recirc valve will put charge air back into the intake system after letting off throttle. Waste gate controls the speed of the turbocharger. Completely separate parts with separate functions
Interesting, I thought that hotter air would make the engine more efficient.
Nah, hot air is less dense so has less oxygen. The less oxygen there is the less efficient fuel to air ratio is detonated. For contrast 14:1 is the best ratio air to fuel needed for best performance and economy. Diesel used an even higher ratio and compression.
I’ve always been told by my dad and his brothers to at colder, denser air = a better bang.
Makes sense
That’s incorrect
Could a bad charge cooler make both turbos shut off?
That's true. Since cold air is heavy it settles down in the cylinder there by increasing volumetric efficiency. Hot air is less dense so it floats reducing the amount of charge in cylinder and it reduces volumentic efficiency
so why does my turbo flutter when i change gears, my car has wastegate
You car doesnt have bov
What happens in vechicle if waste gate gets jam and doesn't open ?
Doesn't work as well. Basically won't build boost pressure since it is short cuircuited.
@@blackmanops3749 I think Chetan tikone mean that the waste gate never opens. It opens to stop building pressure. So if it stays closed likely the turbo will turn into small metal shards that rush into the engine and scratch and rub agents stuff. I mean this is the only logical way it will end up. It is a small turbo getting more and more exhaust rushing into it then safe. It is small to give good power at low or mid range. But when the waste gate kicks in your at high revs.
So it has to spin faster if the engine can supply it with more energy. And as the turbo is killing itself to give more air it will have the power to do so.
But I do not think many road cars need to worry about the waste gate getting stuck. You have far more real problem on normal road cars. Like shit in the oil clogging up the fine oil passages in the turbo. (why there is a oil filter) Modern engine in general have this problem but turbo ones are VERY much a problem zone when it comes to oil. Why it is so crucial to change oil. Even more often then what manuals or the labels say. (if you care about the vehicle)
One of the reasons to have a loud waste gate. External one that is. Not just for the satisfying sound. Never heard it on anything but the high powered gasoline cars. Diesels trucks or lorries I have not heard one in real life. But it might be more due to the law or something being lame. Believe me I have driven some turbo vehicles but not many costume builds. And the benefit of turbos are massive.
If wastegate do not work lubrication is going to fail shortening the lifespan of the turbo. Or it just blows up like when you smash a window.
Sudden power loss and small bits flying into the engine hitting valves and piston and the cylinder walls XD Really lubrication loss let alone on a engine bearing is bad enough. But imagen a turbo that needs a waste gate? It will really do a number on the expected lifetime of it :C
Really think the lube is the main thing that will make it explode. It is taking away heat and avoiding metal contact. The faster spinning might be enough to shatter the moving parts but the lube problem will end it totally.
My electronic waste gate just went bad, it gradually got worse, started with a small rattle that eventually got louder over time. My vehicle also had a hard time building boost and would constantly throw under boost codes which would put the vehicle in limp mode.
