Living down a Class 6 road can be a challenge, regarding emergencies, school & work, but the privacy and quiet is great! Our road ends in a Class 6, but the town does plow our section. The snow blows across our upper ridge fields and fills the road! Sometimes my brother-in-law drives down on a tractor to clear a path, before the town circles back, so I can get to work. Folks often ask us why we work so hard on the farm, since we are all over 65. They seem to fail to notice how healthy we are. We can be independent and self-sustaining in hard times and NH blizzards :-). It all depends what your passion is......

I would rather sell my freezer than that snow blower. It make heavy hard snow removal at least 50 times faster and easier. It also helps keep the alley clear so I can get to my driveway and garage. You know how to work smart not hard. I love your videos. Would you show the pigs when they first arrived and now after all the growing they have done. It seemed to happen so fast. LOL!!

Those wire bolt fishers are really cool. I used them helping a friend install a receiver on his suv. They really work awesome. You mentioned fall coming... I'm in Ct. so I'm not too far from you guys. Last night I went out to dinner on my motorcycle. When I came out to go home, there was dew all over the seat. Thats the first obvious sign that it's getting cooler at night. That probably happens where you are all summer. It still gets chilly at night up there even in the summer. I wonder if those apples are yellow delicious?

Goood Mawnin' Al! Just a follow to yesterday's question... I have the 5 new chick's that I'm feeding a organic non-gmo starter feed, I also bought a bag of Grower feed, do you use starter, then grower, then finally a layer feed (3 steps), or just go from starter to layer as they start laying ... do you use a grower feed in between?

    • @LumnahAcres

Hi Little White Dory, I can say with our girls that were born 3rd week of May we used starter feed until about 7wks old then switched to grower feed. We'll keep thwm on this until we see eggs. Also using now organic feed from Green Mountain Feeds. But our broiler chicks are on their specific Broiler crumbles thru processing time next month.

@@kidsplayrabbitry4930 Thanks, on the flip side of Al's situation of using up the bag of starter, I only bought a small bag of starter and went through it in 3 weeks! So I went from starter at 20% protein to a grower at 17% protein. I'm a bit puzzled because I was under the impression that grower would be a bit higher in protein, my regular Purina Layena (just as a comparison) is 16% protein. It's all a bit technical and to add to the confusion my friend that's using a lesser known brand feeds his layers 20% protein! I thought that sounded very high for full grown layers, makes me really wonder what various feeds are for and which is best....assuming that there is a best and not just different! I believe Joel Salatan runs 16% effectively for his adult birds and only higher proteins blends for his broilers. Well this weekend I will be off island and will look into better choices for both my older laying hens and the chick's that are at ab I UT 4 weeks now and seem healthy and hearty. Thanks!

@@littlewhitedory1 yes we only have 9 layers to be and 7 meat chicks so feed bags of 50lbs last a longggggggg time especially raised on grassy yard like his. I figure that must be how Al is going through so little feed as well!

@@kidsplayrabbitry4930 my we'ins just went out on grass last week. I had them in a xlarge dog crate that I modified to keep them in. The temperature here at night has only gone down to 66° so far, so they seem completely OK with the accommodations! I will be moving them on grass every day or two and they seem to love the grass and bugs I've been catching for them (crickets are in season!). I'm hoping that I can get good feeds in upstate NY and with crickets on the menu hope that their protein needs are being met.

like my daddy always said, "with the right tools the job is easy. Never wrong in investing in the right tools for any repetitive job." He was right. As he usually was.

AL, not being mean, I think I would also try to install the plow, and I am not handy at all. The cost of having a dealer install the plow at $850, I could take a week make 50 calls and still come out ahead. You, being very handy, can spend a day and make the day pay off well. Smart thinking. Still you are using terminology that I do not know the meaning of. I excelled at shop in junior high, then I took a college prep course in senior high. I had no father at home, so I never really learned handyman skills that you provide to subscribers in very seasoned amounts.
Now I do know about trimming goat hooves. I have trimmed many hooves and even done tattooing on Toggenburgs and LaManchas. The LaManchas needed a tattoo in the web of the tail. I put the daughters tattoo about the same location as her mother's tattoo. It worked. Still it would take me a week to install that plow.
God bless you all, and God bless America.

Now that you are no longer tied to a day job, you may be able to 'hire out' to plow other folks' lanes. Or at least help your neighbors after heavy snowfalls.

    Hi from Ireland !
I have two pygmy goats about 7 months old. I was wondering after cleaning out their bed every week do they really need bedding? Or are they happy on wood floor raised off the ground.
I see yours have a bunk bed with no bedding do they choose to sleep up there or on the floor ? Also do they pee and poop as much on the raised wooden floor

They poop plenty on the bunk but they pee on it.
