Gold Mafia - Episode 4 - Have The King With You I Al Jazeera Investigations

  • The net is closing on one of South Africa’s most notorious money launderers. In the final episode, the Gold Mafia boss issues a threat to anyone who breaks the oath of omertà. “What do you think is going to happen?”
“They kill you, don't they?” “Exactly,” he replies.
A member of the same gang is now in hiding and speaks to the I-Unit from a safe house. “They will come after me, that's a given. If I stay [in South Africa], I will be dead by the time this [film] hits the first five minutes of play.”
Other Gold Mafia bosses lure undercover reporters for the business to launder their dirty money with promises of political connections. A senior Zimbabwean diplomat is seeking the approval of the president to use an official plane to carry over a billion dollars of dirty cash from Hong Kong into Zimbabwe.
Two gold mafia bosses tell undercover reporters in Johannesburg, “There’s no president or head of state either of us can’t get to on this continent.” Another advises, “When you work you must always have the king with you. The president”.
Gold Mafia, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit looks at how society’s obsession with gold underwrites a global shadow economy. Investigators obtain the blueprints of money laundering operations that service southern Africa’s economic and political elite. And the investigation leads to the highest offices of state.

The brother, Dawood Khan, exposing the 'truth' was revealed with confidence, yet is it the case that he, having worked over 6 years in the criminal laundering syndicate, was coming out to tell the truth to avoid prosecution or have a lenient sentence, if any? Plenty of people in Zimbabwe and South Africa cannot afford to buy a new pair of shoes. And these criminals treat a million US$ as nothing. Disgraceful.

  • @mickeypetley6688

Extremely good (and brave) journalism 👏👏👏 I think what the programme does do (and does it extremely well) is to actually join the dots between “suspicions” and irrefutable “facts”: bank statements, fake invoices etc. all neatly corroborating the allegations that came out of the interviews. All too often, exposés of this nature are based too much on hearsay. The balance here was both professional and hard hitting. I echo the deep sadness expressed by many here. Africa and its people deserve so much more from not just its own leaders, but also from the international community and especially the banks (without whom NONE of this would ever be possible). It is no surprise whatsoever that HSBC remain up to their eyeballs in such criminal activity. In my view, HSBC remain the indisputable and unchallenged global facilitator of criminal misconduct of all time. They are more powerful than governments and any law enforcement authority and act with shameless impunity. Too big to fail and too big to jail.

After these episodes, having learnt that the mafia is bigger than the gvt, it's is not easy for Zimbos to vote out the mafia. The exposé shows the mafia, controls the army, judiciary, economy, society and above all determine what the citizens will be. Walking on their heads and feasting on their backs. It takes Unity for every concerned citizen to take the role, it onus to make a change. The same reason why NC is not saying much because he knows it's not an individual battle. Everything in Zim is gone. Zimbabwe it's time believe in ourselves we can free ourselves now or we can suffer forever. What is there for the coming generation if we don't standup. It has nothing to do with opposition, but every Zimbabwean.

This goes down in history as the best international journalism work ever. Only Al Jazeera's "FISHROT" documentary of 2018, that got 2 Namibian ministers in jail comes close. These things can only be solved by an empowered African Union (AU). Right now, the AU does not have any power to align its member states, its just an idea sharing platform. We need all 54 national Parliaments to establish a continental house, that make harmonizing laws for the entire continent. These laws will cover everything, except state security, central government, and executive powers. They must however decide on source of personal wealth, movement of money, informal use of state institutions, and conduct of national elections.

You let these bazungu tell you what to do meanwhile the stuff they did in order to enrich their nations (slavery, selling drugs to the Chinese, colonizing whole CONTINENTS, plundering TRILLIONS of dollars from countries around the world).. well, that's OK for white daddy to do... but if Zimbabwe takes back its stolen land, then it needs to be sanctioned and just do whatever white daddy says.
