  • ‘Photograph what Grabs You!’
    Earlier this year I had grabbed myself a beautiful, all mechanical, with no bells and whistle camera. The Leica M-A. Not long afterwards, I decided to find a dedicated lens for the camera and so a couple of weeks ago I picked up a Elmar-M 1:2.8/50mm collapsible lens for it. However, this episode about neither; rather, it is about the ‘Sunny 16 Rule’ I used when I took this camera out to photograph with the new lens. It is a basic exposure set up to photograph in sunlight when you don’t have an exposure meter to use. I hope you enjoy.
    And please, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel if you like it.

    Here in UK not always sunny but can vary the aperture to suit still using sunny 16 and I do have mechanical 35mm cameras...
    My daughter lived out there for a time in Tucson...
    Thanks for cheery video....is good!

    I hope that people who've come to this video interested in metering by high understand that by no means is a sunny day required and that different apertures can be used for the different lighting conditions and that you can also adjust stops via either shutter speed or aperture to make equivalent exposures. The idea of requiring full sun and sticking to the shutter speed that matches the film speed is an incredibly rudimentary way of looking at metering by eye. The sun is 16 rule is very powerful and can be used to teach oneself I exposure that can be very reliable producing great results

    You can always tell old photographer like us because we always refer to film speed as ASA. LOL

    Does the sunny 16 rule still apply if you use reflectors?

    • @ChuckAbles
      @ChuckAbles  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you for the question Morcopololo0817. I'm not quite certain what you mean 'reflectors' in terms of photography. Redirecting light as in reflection in a lake or car window? I do know from my using the Sunny 16 Rule I have photographed some great car windows reflection when the sunlight is just right. I hope that helps.

    what if I want shoot f4 in sunny day with 100ISO? can I play just with shutter speed 4 stops? is it same effect of exposure?

    • @ChuckAbles
      @ChuckAbles  Před rokem

      I've been waiting for you 'likeris'. How are you doing? You pose an interesting question and one I readily don't have an answer for. Other than, if you were to ramp up the shutter speed to say 1/1000, @ f/4, with 100 asa film, and you're not too concerned about depth of field, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've just never tried it, preferring to stick with conventional exposure settings and adjusting when required. Having said that, I thought you were a proficient smartphone photographer?

      @@ChuckAbles "smartphone"? what is all about? my technique is adjusting shutter speed depending on light condition.

    What do think of using a Weston meter… sunny day will always show 16 @ 1000 or even 2000 on that meter, but I limited to 1000 on cam. But … still stay at 500 Since 400 film

    • @ChuckAbles

      Thank you for your comment. I'm afraid I've never used a Weston meter before. However, if I do use an exposure meter it's either the Voigtlander VC Meter II or the Sekonic L-398A Studio Deluxe III Light Meter. And it's funny I received your comment today. Just yesterday while at a veteran's day parade, I had mounted on my film camera the Voigtlander VC. It quit after I took the first photograph and for the rest of the 35 exposures, I had to use the 'Sunny 16 Rule. I will be posting this veteran's day parade video next.
