  • How to Video about changing the Starter Clutch / Freewheel.
    My bike started to have some issues starting, specially in cold weather. To the point that some times when i was trying to start the bike, the bendix gear was not engaging with flywheel.
    I replace the freewheel housing and freewheel with a aftermarket one.

    Good tutorial 👍
    But I would advise to grease the new gasket. This gives you 2 advantages:
    1. The gasket stays in place during assembling
    2. The gasket will come off very easy the next time you disassemble.

      I thoght the same …. when i asked that to a bmw mechanic, told me not to for possible very thin leaks over time. Still do i did what you advice me to when i replace the free wheel and use a new gasket ;) make sence to me ! Thanks for the tip ! Have a safe ride !

    Are you locking the engine in TDC by the screw from the other side (like when doing valves)? Also I might have seen it badly as the video is too fast in this area but to me it seemed like the CPS (hall sensor) had some steel bits near the contacts. This usually happens when the flywheel is going bad. These steel bits can cause intermittent operation of cps (or short it out). So some riders put epoxy on top of these contacts. But even without epoxy I would definitely clean.

    • @ridingluna
      @ridingluna  Před rokem +1

      Hi Kov, no need to lock the engine for this matter. I didnt do it and was ok. True about the CPS sensor, doing this job its a good time to check that out for dirt or loose debrief that can sit on it and creat a malfuntion. In my case, it was clean and ok. Good tip about using some epoxy for protection. :) Have a safe ride !

    What was happening to the bike that let you know it was the free wheel ? How could you tell the bendix gear wasn't engaging with flywheel ? Do you have any video of what was going on before you fixed it ?

    • @ridingluna
      @ridingluna  Před rokem +1

      Hi Steve, im sorry i dont have a video of the failure. Its was very noticiable, specially in the first start in the day on winnter time. The freewhell “ free rotating “ or not engaging …. caused by a wear on the bendix rollers. It will start to fail slowley …. like not a “ solid “ engage …. And after some time, things will be much more noticiable, till one point it will not emgage anymore. So before that happend i decide to change everything with the part showed in the video. I guess you can get just the original bendix part alone from BMW, but im to sure. Still, its a expensive part. So let see how well can take it this aftermarket one, it will cost me 75 US. Worth the try ;).

    I can't see what you did wrong? Someone fitted a new starter clutch to mine and now wont start, spark,compression,turns over fine,just won't fire up.. is it possible to disturb the ignition sensor?

    • @ridingluna
      @ridingluna  Před rokem

      Hi Uncle, what do you mean when you ask me what i did wrong ? Sorry ... i dont understand.
      Its is very hard to tell what wrong with your start problem. But .... if the bike was ok before someone replace the starter clutch, it is possible that is something related with the ignition sensor. I will check that in the first place.

    Hola, no se si el problema es el mismo. Mi f650 gs Dakar del 2000 empieza a hacer un ruido al arrancar, que desaparece en unos segundos y no lo hace siempre que le doy al boton de arranque, solo a veces. Podria ser un síntoma de empezar a tener problemas con el volante libre? Gracias

    • @ridingluna
      @ridingluna  Před 4 měsíci

      Hola Kaparra, es realmente dificil diagnoticar el problema que tienes, pueden ser varias cosas .... y podria equivocarme facilmente si digo lo que es. Lo correcto que podria recomendarte es decirte que lleves la moto a un mecanico para que por lo menos el pueda ver la moto y dar su opinion, luego tu tomas la desicion de arreglarlo por tu cuenta o con un mecanico. Empesaria por el bendix .... dependiendo de donde sea que sientas de donde viene el ruido ...
      Saludos cordiales.

      Genial muchas gracias por la respuesta y por tus vídeos, me he decidido por esta moto entre otras cosas por tus opiniones. Le he cambiado el amortiguador por un wp y metido unas suspensiones de 48 mm de enduro y va realmente bien. Me falta dejarla bien de mecánica para disfrutarla con tranquilidad. He buscado la rueda libre del bendix en recambio original pero está descatalogada, podrías decirme la marca o referencia de la que tú has puesto? Gracias de nuevo
