I had another opportunity to check out the Merlin PSA at Oshkosh 2021. This time we get to talk to Chip, the main distributer of these affordable light sport airplanes in the United States
This tiny little plane is actually very nice. If you are unfamiliar, Merlin PSA is a single pilot solo airplane built in the Czech Republic. It is a production aircraft in Europe but it is sold here in the US as a kit. A quick build kit.
Merlin PSA can be built in 2 weeks or as little as 4 days. The kit comes delivered with most of the work done for you. The fuselage and the landing gear come preinstalled. Legally you have to finish 51% of the build. But this is such a simple kit that it doesn’t take much time to finish it up. Being an experimental aircraft, a builder does have several choices in engine power plane and choosing avionics.
Base price for the quick build kit is $18,500. You can finish your airplane right around $35,000. The more options you add though the higher the finished cost. You only need a 65 Horse power Rotax engine to get this thing moving. And it will cruise between 90 to 120 miles per hour while only burning 2.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Useful load with full fuel is 300 pounds. Thats a lot of available space to use.
If you are not shy about flying alone, definitely give the Merlin PSA a look. You can find out more about this airplane at aeromarine-lsa.com

I looked at buying a single seater about 4 years ago, but for the same $$ I found that a newer, used (say 1000 hr TTAF ) production SLSA with a Rotax 912 was a better choice. It, could be used for instruction, offered more payload, very easy to find Rotax / LSA maintenance, and had better resale value. In the end, I picked up a 1200 hr SNEW tecnam P92 ECHO, ran the engine to TBO, replaced the engine, ran it until that engine was down to about 500 hours left before its TBO and then sold the aircraft for for about what I paid for it. Overall it was a great and worthwhile experience.

What i love avout the 152 is the size of the baggage compartment, if you're flying alone you have both the space and useful load to haul a lot of stuff back there, if you've got your girlfriend with you as well you still have some weight left for some smaller items.

Chip said in another video that they are an experiment - not something that can be ordered at this time. If I remember correctly, they are intended to add an electrically powered boost during takeoff, and then would sit flush inside the outline of the wing airfoil.

Perhaps some day, there will be enough flying autists to help all of the geriatrics who should not even hold a drivers license, let alone a pilot's license, to get where they are going. It will be like "Forrest Gump", "Driving Miss Daisy", and "Top Gun" had a baby, and we all get to stand back and watch this drama unfold.
