  • I had the opportunity to drive a brand new 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman S with the Sport Chrono package, Porsche Sport Exhaust, and PDK for 3 days. Video details my thoughts of the 718 Cayman S as well as how it stacks up against my 2012 987.2 Cayman S. Some exhaust clips and launch control clips included as well. Enjoy.

    Always like the Cayman, but didn’t want one until the 981 came out…. Recently sold my 981 CS PDK with after market exhaust for a base 718 6MT and couldn’t be happier
    The base 718 is much quicker than my 981 S

    Many reviews comment about numerous excellent features of the 718. But as you noted, the sound is not so good. Thanks for the good review.

    Don't listen to the hater. Thanks for sharing how both care makes you feel. Bottom line is to try both and buy the one you like. Both car are simply amazing ! The 718 Cayman S with Good tire is as fast as an old Flat 6 GT4 and some entry level 911, The 718 Cayman S has more torque but does not sound as Good. I tried Both 718 Cayman S and an Old 981 Cayman S with a design GTS looking frame option. I have decided not to buy the 718 and will go with the Old Flat 6 981. So I will get a GTS looking Cayman S. Even though the new one is faster and has a more updated interior. The sound of the turbo was slightly a downer for me. I am no petrol head or enthusiast but the sound of the Flat 6 put a smile on my face... The 718 might lose less value as it newish but the 981 or 987.2 is a keeper.

    Had a 981, 997.1 and now have a 718 S. it’s a better car in every way. No rattles in mine either. Sounds like you’ve got a bad example

    After living with the Cayman for several days, do you feel that it can fit as a daily driver or is it more of a weekend fun car?

    I bought a 981 Cayman s yesterday. Love the 718 & style & performance but its smiles per hour are way too low.

      Sold my 981 CS PDK for a base 718 6MT and couldn’t be happier…. Loved my 981 but it just can’t compare to the instant torque of that turbo….. and the graphite blue metallic is stunning

    Whats the cost to own per year now that you have a 7 year old Porsche?
    Also what did you mount your phone with?

    • @132ksg
      @132ksg  Před 6 lety

      Cost to own isn't too bad if you do most of the work yourself. Example - Oil change is every 10K miles. At a dealer it costs ~$320 in my area. If you buy all the parts yourself its about $100. If you buy the parts from FCPEuro (not a sponsor) they have a lifetime replacement on all parts including pads, oil, oil filter etc... This is how I plan to keep costs down. I also just did spark plugs which was around $40 in parts and an hour or so of my time.
      Other things can be a little more expensive. A brand new Borla system for my car is $1700 and even used ones run $1000. A brand new DC Sports cat back for my 350Z was $500.
      I cobbled together a gopro suction cup mount and a cheapie phone mount that you would find on a selfie stick type thing.

      CarSkiGo I noticed in the new Cayman you cant get to the engine, just an oil port in the back. How were we meant to change filters and whatnot?

    • @132ksg
      @132ksg  Před 6 lety

      The new cayman should be the same as all the other Cayman. Theres a rear deck lid that comes off to get to top of engine and panel behind drivers/passenger seat to get to belts etc...An oil change / spark plug change doesn't require removing any of these parts. Watch my video on oil temp sensor install to see what I'm talking about:

    The sound is awesome. I could buy a hunk of crap Dodge Hellcat wide body for $15k less and get v8 sound. This is super modern, as if from Germany in the 40’s 50’s. Mechanical crazy precision sound. I also am extremely bored of high revving monotone 6-12 cylinder flat engine sounds. I have no fantasies of being in an F1 race. I want artistic and unique. Also does not sound like a WRX, those sound like dull plop sounds. Even more they dont have uneven headers for a few years and sound super boring for more hp. I had also a BRZ and this does not sound like that either. The PDK adds way way too much weight to the car. The S is also 52 lbs heavier than the base. S+PDK makes the car sedan weight. You probably would enjoy manual and base. 20” wheels also is not standard. That is adding weight that has no use.

      N/A soundsSoGood if you listened to what I said, there is a difference between being loud and sounding good. You can rip the exhaust off a Civic and it'll be loud. The 987 is loud and sounds amazing, the 718 is loud and doesn't sound as good. There's a draw back to that turbo 4.
