      @@davidmcTurd Talking about pure talent, he was one of the most gifted bigs of all time. Any baskeball fan who has followed his career knows this.
      His team-oriented vision made his stats not too colourful (not to talk about Pau many times only having the first half to fill the statline, because the Lakers used to let Kobe do his thing in the second half, when Pau sometimes almost did not touch the ball...)but I´ve watched the man outplay day in, day out, every big on the league while on his prime, and become an absolute monster when playing against the best ever with the Spanish national team. Actually he was still an incredible player at age 36.
      Another thing is how incredible disrespected he was by the refs. He had to play and shoot with hard contact most posessions. Now I watch present era´s bigs scoring with the defenders trying to not get dirty with the opponent´s sweat, and I ask myself what Pau could have been in 2022 if he were in his prime.

Despite the fact that he was 7 foot tall, he had better handles than most people I'd ever seen and he was just so skilled in the post. A buddy of mine got to guard him in a little 1 on 1 action. He missed the first shot and then proceed to call which shoulder he was gonna shoot from in the post for every shot. And made like 8 in a row with my friend guarding him. Really cool moment and he was very kind and generous as well. Thanks for having him on, JJ.

    Legend.
    I'm still a little bitter he wasn't able to speak at Kobe's funeral but that's just the pettiness in me. I always felt the two of them always shared a far deeper bond than him and Shaq ever did but I understand that kind of thing is a popularity contest.
    Straying OT - great pod thanks again for sharing these stories with us.

    • @catherinelynnfraser2001
      @catherinelynnfraser2001 Před 2 lety +5

      He was pretty broken when Kobe died. I think he couldn’t do it and he didn’t. Pau has said as much. He had less interest in the funeral spectacle and needed time to grieve. I’ll respect him for that. Lakers aren’t only showtime.

      @millardfilmore1403 Před 2 lety +2

      @@catherinelynnfraser2001 yes have you seen the video of him speaking about it in Spanish and breaking down ? It was just beautiful and so sad. In the end he said something like “he is my brother” or something just how they always used to say …

    • @winterfoxcloud
      @winterfoxcloud Před 2 lety +4

      @@catherinelynnfraser2001 You might be right - again, it was my pettiness speaking more than my rational mind. I'm sure Pau had his reasons, Kobe's family had their reasons and they went from there. The ceremony was beautiful regardless.
      What is important is that Pau and Kobe were a truly unique partnership on and off the court.

    As a Warriors fan I could help noticing his comment about possibly working for that team. That offer may have something to do with James Wiseman who will not play this year. Pau is the consummate pro. He would be a great addition to any NBA team... working with big men who have finesse and agility. And he calls L.A. home... which makes perfect sense. Great interview. This is the place to meet the NBA players. JJ is a great interviewer. BBall at its best.

      Marc was drafted by the Lakers and his rights were later traded to Memphis in the Pau trade.
      Marc didn't play for the Lakers though because he stayed one more season in Spain after he was selected.
