I was in seventh grade when this album dropped. I remember the day it leaked. I had a teacher who would play Common in class when we were taking tests. It was the song Come Close off Electric Circus on loop for the entire period.
I burned a copy of Be and gave it to him after class. To this day I’ve never seen anyone that happy. The only teacher I remain in touch with and consider a close friend. He denies it but I’m certain my grades immediately improved.

    -Eric Benet is a singer
-Sampling was basically the beginning of hip-hop as we know it today. Started with two copies of the same record at a party in New York in the 70s and people dancing to DJ Kool Herc repeating the break(instrumental break down) of the two records manually... so begins the art of sampling, so begins hip-hop... later to have MCs rhyme over those breaks at parties....

What makes your channel interesting, is your pops gives a chance to all types of rap tunes. Even the ones I wouldn’t play in front of my parents for a second lol! I Haven’t even started to watch yet, and I actually feel confident in leaving a comment… Contrary to most of what you subject him to, I’m sure your dad will genuinely love this album. He’s a soulful guy and this is just good music… I grew up on all kinds of rap music, and still appreciate all types. As I’ve gotten older though, I mainly listen commom, Mos def, talib, early Kanye, lupe, roots, dead prez etc. As I’ve gotten older, i like a more positive message most of time.. You both may already know this, but Hip Hop (like most authentically "Black American" genres of music) is essentially poor people's music, which is why it resonates globally. Consider that the art form was created in early 1970s New York City, shortly after integration & the Civil Rights movement. This was a time when white Americans fled the inner cities for the suburbs. This exodus (to escape newly integrated Black people) led to severe urban blight in the urban core. This was also a time when industrialization (which financially sustained uneducated Black Americans) also left these urban areas. Money dried up or was diverted away from Black areas to the suburbs and white communities. As a result, these Black communities were cut off from many things, not the least of which was music programs in the schools.
Simultaneously, access to New York's music scene was largely cut off from young, poor, Black & Latin inner city kids. This choke point is what led to the use of general household items for musical expression. (pots, pans, buckets, and yes... TURNTABLES.) Sampling (however you think of it) was poor people's way of creating music while responding to conditions that might've destroyed other communities. Out of that struggle to create, an entire global music revolution was born and is now the dominant musical form worldwide.
That's why sampling is so widely used in Hip Hop. It's literally part of the DNA.

This! Thank you for your detailed and necessary response. Many people miss the amount of creativity & genius required to create an exquisite something out of almost nothing. That we as Black folk ALWAYS find a way to take what is done to us negatively and turn it into a positive is, for me, the hallmark of my community’s resilience, power, and love.

So cool that you're showing your dad Common much more thoroughly than some more "mainstream" rappers like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, etc. He's such a refreshment in the rap world.
    I think he'd love "I used to love H.E.R."
    Cheers to both of you!

Pops was trying to say Common speaks to the urban realities without wallowing in it, and even finds the beauty in it. It still manages to be positive and uplifting music despite some of the themes and subject matter.

Not to overload your Pop with too much Common, but he might also enjoy "Come Close" with Mary J. Blige, "Love of My Life" with Erykah Badu, and "I Used to Love H.E.R.". All great joints, but the last two have very interesting backstories. You can thank me later.
