Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (stylized as good kid, m.A.A.d city) is the second studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was released on October 22, 2012, through Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The album features guest appearances from Drake, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Jay Rock, Anna Wise, and MC Eiht. It is Lamar's major label debut, after his independently released first album Section.80 in 2011 and his signing to Aftermath and Interscope the following year.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was recorded mostly at several studios in California, with producers such as Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, Pharrell Williams, Hit-Boy, Scoop DeVille, Jack Splash, and T-Minus, among others, contributing to the album. Billed as a "short film by Kendrick Lamar" on the album cover, the concept album follows the story of Lamar's teenage experiences in the drug-infested streets and gang lifestyle of his native Compton. The album earned Lamar four Grammy Award nominations at the 2014 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
The album was supported by five singles - "The Recipe", "Swimming Pools (Drank)", "Backseat Freestyle", "Poetic Justice", and "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe". All five singles achieved chart success of varying degrees. Lamar also went on a world tour between May and August 2013, featuring the other members of the hip hop collective, Black Hippy.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its thematic scope and Lamar's lyrics. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, selling 242,000 copies in its first week - earning the highest first-week hip hop album sales of 2012 from a male artist. It became Lamar's first album to enter the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 16, and entering the UK R&B Albums Chart at number two. The album was also named to many end-of-the-year lists, often topping them. It was later certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2020, the album was ranked 115th on Rolling Stone's updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

sophomore year in high school my English teacher taught this album as a whole unit. we would listen to a track and then read out the lyrics. we would discuss and analyze it along with learning about the context around the track. we went track to track like they were chapters in a book. I will always be grateful that my teacher choose to teach us that. most people would say that TPAB is a superior album and I don't think I would disagree, but this album I hold higher in my heart because of that unit.

Sing about me, I’m dying of thirst is quite possibly the greatest track ever. So beautifully made, every single lyric. Every verse. The beats. Only a few songs come close to it. The fact it’s wrote and spoke from different peoples perspectives and is so well and cleverly conceptualised is astonishing. It almost flows too well, like it’s too good to be true.

I completely skipped over that song when I used to listen to this album back in high school, only ever listened to the upbeat tracks and BDKMV. The first time I heard Sing of me, I’m dying of thirst I legitimately cried.
The gun shots at the end of the first verse made me feel as if he got shot in real time the very first time I heard it.. A feeling I haven't felt since.. beautifully executed!
I heard this song for the first time the other day and it really hit in the feels. Especially when I'm Dying of Thirst came on. Wish it was a separate track from Sing About Me, because that part hit me the hardest

As a father, I pretty much lost it when his parents are calling during 'Real' and telling him sorry for hearing about your homeboy, I hope you make it back, etc. "Sing this song it's all for you, sing this song it's all for you" is me hearing Kendrick saying to his parents, "I'm trying so hard. I'm trying really, really hard." That coupled with the helplessness his parents feel in that situation, to me, is devastating. I feel for Kendrick, I feel for his parents, I feel for anyone who feels stuck in that situation. Incredible moment of the album.

I remember when backseat freestyle dropped as a single and everyone was scared that Kendrick was going to dumb down his music and go radio friendly. Then when everyone heard the song in context with the album they loved it
I listened to this album for the first time, months ago (not when it was released), I had mixed feelings. When I really paid attention to the whole album context and listened with lyrics it became one of my favorites
The first song I listened to of Kdot was Backseat freestyle and I absolutely hated it 😂 but I couldn't get it out of my head, then I started to dig in his music more and more, then I was blown away! He's my favorite artist ever since
he's already radio friendly. they don't play his music on the radio because its not commercially viable. nobody is driving to this shit. insane clown posse is an example of not radio friendly AND not commercially viable. kendrick lamar can say whatever about society that he wants if he puts better beats behind it. he is not blacklisted bro 💀

sing about me, I’m dying of thirst. “I’ll never fade away.” and then her voice starts to fade on the track. always gets me.
I noticed those details after many more re-listens of the album. Same with "and if die before your album drop I hope.. *gunshots*". This album is flawless in my eyes, the attention to detail in the production of it always mesmerizes me. "The art of peer pressure" is criminally underrated, imo one of his best songs, it has it's own story, same with SAMIDOT. And the names of the tracks are really cool, on my first listen when I saw the title "Sherane aka Master Splinter's daughter" I was really intrigued to listen the album, and the vibe of the track is immaculate. It is honestly my favourite album of all-time.
I'm sad that I couldn't get the 10th anniversary special limited edition vinyl.. but I got the CD because the new cover is hard af, I recommend getting it if you love the album as well 🔥🔥

"Sing About Me" was the way I actually discovered Kendrick and got into hiphop. I'm a white guy who grew up in a suburban, middle/upper middle class environment in the 2000s that really looked down on hiphop as a genre, so I had been force fed this view of hiphop as garbage music.
Then, in 2014, I was going through a truly awful time in my life. Borderline suicidal, waking up in a cold sweat that had soaked through my clothes every morning for weeks on end, and feeling utterly destitute and worthless. But one night I was browsing CZcams, desperately looking for anything to distract me from my misery, and found that song. From the get go, it was not what I expected aesthetically or lyrically from a hiphop song. And as I listened to the lyrics, I was literally reduced to tears over the stories and sentiment K-Dot was expressing. It made a profound impact on my mindset at the time and helped me get through the worst period of my life while showing me the value in hiphop as a means for black men and women like Kendrick and so many others to tell their stories. And now I'm 27, doing very well, and I have the waveform of the line "Promise that you will sing about me" tattood on my left forearm.

Sing About Me is a PERFECT song. Its the best hip-hop song I have ever heard; the storytelling is captivating from beginning to end. Cemented Kendrick as the GOAT of his generation for me.
This album and illmatic are so similar in how they really allow you to understand their lives and experiences through just absolutely crazy, rich story telling. Such amazing debut albums.
Section 80 is kendrick’s debut but yeah illmatic is a masterpiece
I always felt like Kendrick’s album- while not as good as Illmatic, had like a redemption/lesson where as Nas’ album was more of a documentary. Never once in Illmatic did Nas regret the life he lived or witnessed, while Kendrick at the end of GKMC basically teaches the consequences of our actions and redemption

As someone who grew up in gang infested Los Angeles, with family who was in gangs but myself not really being tied to the gang life, I understood Kendrick throughout this whole album. Someone who had friends and family willing to give everything up to a block who doesn’t love you and at the same time understanding the rights and wrongs about all that. This will forever be my favorite Kendrick album

Had a chance to see Kendrick live right after TPAB came out in October, 2015 randomly in Columbus at a 2000 person outdoor space in the rain for 106.7 IHeartRadio Birthday Bash at LP Pavilion and he performed “Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst” for (in his words) only the 2nd time because of how intimate a setting it was. And it was absolutely next level. Never forget it. Thankfully still got videos etc but the shit is from an old android 😂

I saw him perform it as day n Vegas in November after two years of him not being able to perform and Kendrick was tearing up during sing about me, the whole crowd was just in awe watching him, it was really emotional.

the fact that kendrick wrote jay's verse on money trees, to me, is one of the craziest things about this album. this verse is so hard, bro, and the energy that jay's delivers is amazing also.
I just want to add, that I am glad your dad is grasping the depth of Hip Hop/Rap. A lot of people think its trash music as majority of what is played on radio are the turn up/feel good/violence/bubble gum rap. If more people took some time to dig a little deeper, they will understand how great of a genre it actually is, if not the best, as it is the most versatile. I just love watching people actually understand what hip hop is all about. This type of hip hop is the backbone/life blood of the genre, but there is a time and a place for all the other sub-genres as well.

As someone who grew up a teen in mid-90s LA when it was a gang capital it warms my heart to see someone like Kendrick come from the next generation and be a beacon, but more importantly a messenger to the masses of the trials of being a youth, a good well-intentioned kid in a mad city.
Dude even won a Pulitzer Prize for his album DAMN… which has one of my favorite tracks by him ever… Fear.
Sherane is one of the best album openers of all time. The coldness of his delivery, the voicemail, the infant-like singing and the drums set the vibe of the album perfectly. Sad that is slept on so much.

I remember skipping high school as a sophomore to listen to this album. Section80 was a personal favorite of mine. I listened to GKMC on repeat all day and was more amazed through every listen.
Being able to see Kevin’s first reactions is great because I’m always able to witness an experience that I wish I could feel again. I think that’s why I can’t stop watching this channel, it’s so good!
This album got me into listening to rap. I was a total indie rock kid. Idk how I became aware of this album, but when it came out I was listening to it all the time. It was the first year I was out of highschool so was driving back home a ton and I would just put this on and groove the whole way down the highway.

Growing up without a dad sitting here and watching you guys is awesome. Gives me a sense of what’s it’s like to grow up with a dad and showing him new generation music and appreciating things together. I think the idea of him saying “Mom I’ll be back, ima take the car for 15 min” is to give people that didn’t grow up in an area like his a perspective of what a parent in poverty has to think about when there kid leaves the house for “15 minutes”.

the art of peer pressure has to be one of my favorite tracks of this album. the story telling, the beat, everything is on point. great album overall, this is hip hop and we love it.
Shows peer pressure really well, it’s not just people actively pressuring you to do something it’s also doing things you wouldn’t normally do because you’re with the homies.

My jaw dropped when I first heard him reflect about not smoking because the first blunt made him foam from the mouth. Not only did I relate to that on a personal level but that coupled with the relentless tragedy surrounding him, you can almost feel the insanity taking over of a young innocent good kid. Heartbreaking stuff.

I absolutely love watching your dad's enthusiasm for what many people in his generation including my parents would consider "vulgar" or "corrupting" music. I just wish the lyrics were explored more deeply but i understand how that might be difficult as this brief overview is already 40 minutes long. I just think, as a person of color, there's so many realities and cultural aspects that Kendrick brings to light in a way that allows him to "own it" that many of us never found a way to express

@Thiên Phúc Huỳnh I think the production on TPAB makes it just as good to vibe to. Might just be me, and they’re both fantastic albums, but TPAB is next level in every way.

This is my favourite Kendrick project TPAB is incredible but something about this album always brings me back to it.

Sherane is the sound you hear throughout the album, and when you hear it, she is present. There is a weird, almost "underwater" sound in the beginning of the first track, and that's Sherane. If you go through the album again, listen for it and it makes the story even more complex and amazing than it already is. Hope this helps! Love the vids, keep em going! DAMN next?

No Tiny Desk Concert by Kendrick as of yet, unfortunately, but he did do a couple of "Untitled" performances on late night shows around when TPAB came out and those are extremely good, like some of his best work in my opinion. Definitely worth watching.

When this album was first being rolled out, Kendrick had a pretty big up & coming buzz and the album was very anticipated. Swimming Pools was the first single/track we heard, so it had a lot of people nervous thinking he might have taken a super mainstream turn compared to his older stuff. Also, the song blew up and thats why it became a party anthem. Upon release of the album tho, everyone was surprised by the genius way the song plays in context. Incredible & one of the greatest albums of all time
Incredible how the song in context turns it from a party anthem banger to a morbid warning of the lifestyle.

This album was my first time finding music on my own, I was only listening to what my mother played and that was mostly old R&B. Like I’m 20 now and I remember this album coming out and how I was mind blown because backstreet freestyle, and confused on the beat switch on madd city……will forever have a special place in my ❤️
Same experience, artists like Kendrick mean a ton coming from a place where artists like Sade and Luther were in the background of my life for as long as I could remember. Felt like this was my music for the first time, like I found it and that’s what gives it that value ❤️🔥

Any hip hop album these guys cover is worth listening to until you appreciate it, even WLR. In following them you’ve put yourself on an excellent path of discovery. A few recommendations that are initially difficult listens would be JPEGMAFIA, Deathgrips, and Danny brown. All are at times very intense, especially in the case of Deathgrips and Danny, but all three are ridiculously good and expanded my (a self diagnosed hip hop head) mind on what music could be, and especially the extent of what hip hop could be.

Totally agree with the storytelling/“script”feeling of this album. Hope you do Because the Internet at some point, another album that builds a vivid story, in its case literally having a screenplay alongside the album
Forever grateful for this album. I’ve listened to this ever since it came out when I was 13 and know these songs off by heart start to finish (very proud 😆). I always feel like kendrick hoped for this album to show the world the reality of what it means to be black and raised in the ghetto and how crime can be so easily brought in their life. It’s hard to blame them when you realise that they were once just a GOOD KID in a MAAD CITY.
Each time I visit this album after a year or so I always understand it a little more!

Also, note every time you hear that eary sound like on the Sherane track...Kendrick is having a flashback to times where he was around or his life revolved around her. the end of each track is the beginning of the next, literally. Kendrick needs to Executive Produce a film of this album man.

So fucking cool to see your dad getting the last two tracks' relevance to the album on first listen. I say this because so many people write those two songs off initially, especially Compton. Not realising that Real is the beautiful wrapup to an emotionally draining journey and Compton basically being the end credits scene, kind of a bonus track but still continues the story in a celebratory way. Your dad's engagement to every last second of this masterpiece was a sight to behold!
Compton is probably my favorite track of the album. It’s like a celebration of life after the whole album is done
